Harbaugh said he’s handing the keys over to Gattis
January 15th, 2019 at 9:05 AM ^
I do think the OL dictated a lot of what we did or didn’t do. Have to go with what your team is capable of running. Hopefully wth the entire OL back and another year under Warinner we improve there and Gattis can open it up more
January 15th, 2019 at 9:12 AM ^
The OL transformed during the course of the year, and offensive creativity didn't seem to come along with it. I'm sure I wasn't the only one hoping that we had been saving up an entire RPO package for OSU only to see us trot out the same offense we ran all year.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:46 AM ^
When do you suppose the chorus of, "Wait until next year" becomes this year?
January 15th, 2019 at 10:51 AM ^
The O-Line wasn’t in a place to drop back and sit in the pocket for 10 seconds leisurely scanning the field, sure.
But it was more than good enough to get quick strikes out to our athletes...except we virtually never bothered to do this.
January 15th, 2019 at 10:58 AM ^
Why can't our offense look like the one we rolled out against Florida in the 2008 bowl game? Spread them out, pass to get them on their heels and the run game opens up from there... That was everything l want to see from a Michigan offense...
January 15th, 2019 at 6:02 PM ^
The offense looked amazing that day. Is Mike DeBord available?
January 15th, 2019 at 7:41 AM ^
So a guy who’s never called plays before is calling plays and we’re supposed to swoon? Hope Gattis is the next super star, but it’s wait and see until we see it.
January 15th, 2019 at 7:52 AM ^
This man does not speak for me.
January 15th, 2019 at 7:55 AM ^
I wouldn’t say that exactly, he was the Passing Game Coordinator/WR coach at Penn State and I do remember in 2017 they were fun to watch slinging the ball around. So I’m sure with that and being around Moorehead, Locksley and Saban he’s gonna be good to go

"here are the keys to your Pontiac Aztek"
January 15th, 2019 at 7:54 AM ^
Y'all need a sense of humor. This is funny.
January 15th, 2019 at 8:05 AM ^
Walter White made it work, why can't Gattis?
January 15th, 2019 at 8:07 AM ^
Agree, very funny .... but did no one watch Breaking Bad. Those hideous beasts are badass.
edit: beat to the punch
January 15th, 2019 at 10:04 AM ^
FYI. Breaking Bad movie in the works. Working title is "Greenbriar." Allegedly supposed to double as the series finale of Better Call Saul. Sounds pretty cool.
January 15th, 2019 at 11:38 AM ^
I can picture the crowds now, dressing as their favorite character. I could be a fatter, older version of “Todd.”
January 15th, 2019 at 11:43 AM ^
That is kind of how I look right now.
Anyway, it will be AMC television release, so unless you have your own party, there will be no crowds.
January 15th, 2019 at 10:04 AM ^
When those cars came out they were all over the place in Metro Detroit. Since no one was buying them, GM made everyone that got a company car (which used to be a ton of ppl) take one instead of their Caddies and suv's.
January 15th, 2019 at 7:58 AM ^
I'm eager to see the type of creativity Gattis will put into his play calling. I'm even more interested to see how he will be able to scheme against the tougher defenses on the schedule. If things start to fail or not work, will there be adjustments? How much creativity will be implemented into the offense? We don't need to do trick plays every down, but there needs to be an urgency of attacking as much as possible. No more getting to the line with 10 seconds on the clock, no more letting the defense of the other team get a break after a big play by our offense, no more running and running and more running into a stacked box. I am excited to see what is in store.
January 15th, 2019 at 8:02 AM ^
As long as we beat Osu I don’t care who has the keys. A 43 year old woman with 2 kids in the backseat and talking on her phone would be just fine, as long as we beat Osu.
January 15th, 2019 at 8:41 AM ^
Hmm... You’re describing my wife six years ago, and I can tell you that would not have resulted in a win over OSU.
More like a handful of Wellbutrin and a stiff drink.
But I take your point.
January 15th, 2019 at 8:05 AM ^
Hopefully, with parts such as Shea at QB w DPJ, Collins, and Black at WR - Gattis can take those keys, build us a Ferrari, and put the gas pedal on the floor.
Time to have a little fun...
January 15th, 2019 at 8:11 AM ^
If taken at his word, that's excellent news, but I still want something in front of me which shows a very un-Harbaugh offense before I completely buy into the statement. Is that being too jaded? I don't know.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:04 AM ^
So, in other words, let's have this same talk next year at this time.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:14 AM ^
Once the team has won a National Championship of course, right? Right!?
January 15th, 2019 at 9:13 AM ^
Couldn't agree more.
January 15th, 2019 at 8:48 AM ^
This begs the question, why is Pep still here? I sincerely don't hold him in the low regard as most Pep-haters do but unless he's reassigned to strictly a position coach, I don't see the need for him on this staff.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:07 AM ^
Maybe waiting for the NFL season to officially end, and see who all has openings?
January 15th, 2019 at 9:45 AM ^
I am guessing they are doing everything they can to not eat his contract.
January 15th, 2019 at 8:48 AM ^
Man I hope this means we beat OSU and win a national title now. Would hate for the nation’s premier group of armchair quarterbacks to have to find something else to blame our UNACCEPTABLE losses on.
We shall see - it all sounds good at least!
January 15th, 2019 at 10:53 AM ^
National Title? I will GLADLY “settle” for beating OSU and a B10 title.
January 15th, 2019 at 8:52 AM ^
Good to see. Doesn't necessarily guarantee a better result, but I'm glad to see that Harbaugh is continuing to evolve and recognizing that the status quo was not going to cut it.
The man is not as stubborn as we (and I myself, admittedly, sometimes) think he is.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:08 AM ^
If we get our playmakers into space, actually scheme toward opponent weaknesses and not continue to jam a square peg into a round hole and we also tweak the defense to adjust for slants, mesh, etc. then we could be a very tough team to contend with.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:09 AM ^
I'll believe it when I see it. Harbaugh doesn't strike me as someone to give up control of anything. Rightly or wrongly, I cannot imagine Harbaugh sitting back and giving Gattis that degree of autonomy.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:11 AM ^
Cool.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:15 AM ^
Listened to the AED Podcast w/Coach Gattis. He definitely talks the talk, can understand why recruits gravitate to him. Cautiously optimistic heading into next year
January 15th, 2019 at 9:16 AM ^
Thank you God!!! Mayb now we will see the offense we want!
January 15th, 2019 at 9:17 AM ^
I thought Harbaugh was too stubborn to change? I thought he only liked to hire washed out NFL re-treads? I thought he was sitting in his office twiddling his thumbs and stoked about how we're just a few years away from building enough of a callus that our wear them out offense is going to explode?
January 15th, 2019 at 11:34 AM ^
Harbaugh has, every year, shown an ability and willingness to change and adapt. Both in the offseason and during the season; frankly, sometimes too much.
But even when he reformated the basic look of the offense, as he did this past year, the committee structure was still in place.
We'll see if that really changes or not.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:22 AM ^
We'll see. I'm worried that if there is a couple of incomplete passes Jim will be urging him to switch to the run. If one thing we have learned from seeing Jim coach over these past seasons, it's he is very conservative and risk averse.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:26 AM ^
How could you be averse to Risk... one of the best board games out there. Each game guarantees 30 minutes of hope, and 4 hours of "please someone win".
January 15th, 2019 at 10:55 AM ^
Not false
January 15th, 2019 at 9:24 AM ^
Hiring Coach Gattis was a major league chess move imho for so many reasons already discussed on this blog. Michigan football program still ascending.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:41 AM ^
Loved listening to them talk on the podcast. Pretty impressed with Gattis and the direction the team is going.
January 15th, 2019 at 9:52 AM ^
That all sounds good, but why did it take Harbaugh, 4 years to figure this out? And can we really trust that it will happen in the biggest games? As with most people, I will wait and see.
January 15th, 2019 at 10:00 AM ^
Hell yeah.
January 15th, 2019 at 10:11 AM ^
The core of Gattis’ offensive philosophy is the same as Harbaugh’s. Michigan will still look to pound defenses with the run game. Where Gattis’ impact on the approach will likely manifest in the level of belligerence exhibited when trying to establish that ground attack. In other words, if the body blow approach isn’t winning rounds, Gattis won’t be averse changing his strategy between rounds. Even early in a fight.
This is what we all wanted...let's hope it works.
January 15th, 2019 at 10:14 AM ^
I do not believe Coach Harbaugh is as averse to change as many think...though he does seem to be a bit slow in coming around to it. Here, I believe the OSU game may have been "what broke the camel's back". At the same time, I see his principle of controlling the clock to be one that will compete with a full-blown, quick-strike offense. This will be the "learning-curve"...and why the Gattis hire makes a lot of sense...coming from the success of the Alabama system...which should still be considered elite.
January 15th, 2019 at 10:43 AM ^
You can still control the clock with a no-huddle offense. The Moeller teams with Grbac and Collins won the time of possession game and they rarely huddled up. The problem is trying to win 3-4 yards at a time. That's not going to beat good teams.
