Harbaugh refutes reports that he is leaving - Bleacher Report

Submitted by Indy Pete - Go Blue on December 4th, 2020 at 8:35 PM

Good for him. I think it takes some courage to acknowledge that he wants to stay. It may not be his choice if he continues to fail to meet expectations.  It is respectable to put yourself out there and state that you want to/ intend to stay in a situation where you may be fired against your will. I respect his character - regardless of how this works out for him.

Go blue - and if Jim stays, may he realize his/ our dreams at Michigan. If he leaves, may our new coach help us realize our dream.

This is a great reminder of how poorly this could go. If Warde’s final decision is to keep Harbaugh and he’s waited to announce that, then Warde should be fired.
At this point the only acceptable reason for not announcing anything is because a change is coming and they’re still working out the details of it.

I think its pretty easy to piece this together...

1. JH is obsessed with the task at hand (this season)

2. He has a, what has been described as a "to a fault", refusal to discuss next career steps during said task referenced in #1

3. Warde isn't going to fire him

Warde hasn't said anything because he hasn't had the conversation with JH about what JH wants to do which is and has always been the more likely scenario

Yeah, because losing to a dreadful Sparty team and an 0-5 PSU team takes an obsession of focus.

"Warde hasn't said anything because he hasn't had the conversation with JH about what JH wants to do"

If that is true, Warde should be fired, as well.

Now, if Harbaugh is staying, Manuel needs to get out in front of the speculation and announce that he'll be back

I agree, but I also always assumed there would be some sort of a post-season evaluation as I'm sure most ADs do with a coach.  It's unlikely they'd just come out and fire JH.  So, the more likely scenario to me is a discussion of the struggles and a mutual decision of either JH leaving on his own terms or Manuel agreeing to bring him back and give him the needed extension at least on paper with the assumption of hitting some benchmarks in 2021.  So, I assumed there wouldn't be any decisions until the season is over unless there is some major disaster forcing Manuel's hand.  Unfortunately this may also mean UM misses out Campbell as someone else may snatch him up before UM has the chance to go after him.

Why do we have to wait until the season is over? They can’t do shit right now anyway. Warde should sit down with Harbaugh now and figure it out. The season may be over anyway at this point. For fucks sake Warde get a move on this shit bc Harbaugh is essentially a lame duck already.

I agree that they should, but I don't think they will.  To fire a guy mid-season it really. has to be a disaster.  I think there is some evidence of this, there are also plenty of valid excuses like Covid, opt outs, injuries, assistants not coaching in person, etc.  That's probably enough to get a guy who is beloved by the university more time.  And, obviously JH has said he doesn't plan on leaving.

Absolutely. I’m really frustrated with this. I know many disagree with me in keeping Harbaugh, but  if it’s not to be then MAKE A DECISION. I don’t see how anyone other than our opponents are served by remaining silent. It’s bad for the program, the recruits, current players and assistants... everyone.

Situation very bizarre. No news and no word on extension says they plan to part ways after season is over. Recruits not leaving like crazy before 12/16 shows recruits think staff is staying? I get no news if it’s a parting at end of year. Just odd though the recruits wouldn’t know more than us on situation when they ask. Very odd all around. Not sure what to think.

Been hearing rumors its a mixed bag has some of the michigan people do not want Harbaugh back and others do because they don't know who we would get thats better, which at this point is fucking laughable.

I heard announcement was coming next week and ita going to get messy

Well some of the stuff i have heard is being posted literally on youtube on the ticket with Rico talking about it with people he knows. Not valenti giving the information, i know rico is an idiot as well, but he is connected to enough people within the state and this year he has said a bunch of crap that has come true..

he literally on the video discusses the safety that just committed to missou that we may not be getting him any longer, than hours later he committs to missou.

But that is just one location, but there are others talking about the same

I just don't understand how you can look at the last 3 years and say nobody could do a better job of recruiting, roster management and player development.  We are winless at home and are thanking our lucky stars that we are likely to not play out the rest of the season.  The Wolverine is wounded and needs to be taken to the vet.

This team is lifeless and lacks leadership.  Anyone with an unbiased set of eyes watching the games sees it.  I love Harbaugh and I am 100% a Michigan fan, always have been and forever will be.  But the ship is sinking fast.

If he truly loved Michigan he would agree to mutually part ways at the end of the season.

He failed. Plain and simple. Time for someone else to take over.

That’s exactly what’s going to happen. The lack of action on an extension is pretty telling. Even if he was going to stay one more year, they’d at least extend a year or two to boost recruiting a bit. Only one option makes any sense at this point and Harbaugh has had an eye on other opportunities since probably after the Wisconsin game

This is complete BS. “Eye on other opportunities” - fucking source this shit or GTFO.
Not a defense of Harbaugh but the dude has an empty cupboard and probably knew it coming into the year. Sometimes you bite the bullet and make it through the year with a respectable record. Others you take one on the chin and regroup. Year 6 sucks obviously but bring in a good recruiting class and shit can change real quick.

The hawt takes on this board are gross and have little or no context. Wild West here folks!

I agree that Harbaugh probably hasn't had eyes on other opportunities. Admirably, he is a "task-at-hand" kind of guy, as has been mentioned before in this thread. He does look miserable in the job though. And the empty cupboard is his own damn fault. They've suffered much worse than taking one on the chin. Half the team has quit on him. So yeah, we need a new coach.

Well I commend him for sticking his neck out there and wanting to see this through to the end. However bitter of an end it might be. Although depending on how many boosters and donors back out, staying may not be his choice to make. I just hope whatever decision is made, make it sooner rather than later. Recruits need to know where Michigan stands with Harbaugh’s future. Worthy is probably gone, but others are waiting on this decision.

If he does get a chance to come back, can we please get the 2015-16 Harbaugh back? The fiery, passionate, slightly unhinged SOB who would lose his shit and get in a ref’s face to defend his players and his team? The guy who took no shit from anyone? I know that alone doesn’t win football games, but there was an X Factor within this program in those two years that we just haven’t seen since.

Would he say otherwise?  I mean, this very well could be true, and at this time of the season it does seem likely...but were they expecting Harbaugh to say "Recruiting going good, good relationships.  Me?  Oh, no, I'm outty 5000."

It is respectable, and I can see how it would be hard to change when being this way got him this far.  But at the same time this lack of flexibility is also what appears to be causing problems such as being hard on assistants, poor player retention, and being too slow to make changes with the coordinators and play calling.

If he stays he needs to make major changes. Get rid of Brown. Replace his son with Mike Hart. Most of all he needs to recruit Michigan and Ohio A LOT better.

nerv

December 4th, 2020 at 10:03 PM ^

Most of all he needs to stop interjecting his decades old offensive philosophies on whoever the poor sap of an OC ends up being. We can fire and hire another 10 offensive coordinators but they're all going to be saddled with running 50% manball garbage.

Major changes - correct! It needs to start with the organization in general - new recruiting coordinator and new strength and conditioning coordinator followed by some new assistants. Top requirement for an assistant - ability to strategically recruit an area of the country.

If an extension is announced, even if it is only for a couple years, I think the wind is officially out of this program's sails.

A new coach needs to come in next year and overhaul this whole thing.

I have a gut feeling that if JH does stay, the fan support is going to fall of a cliff. He's had six years. He's done nothing. It's over. Time to turn the channel.
