Jim Harbaugh called Michigan to inform the school that, despite interviewing with the Vikings today, he will be returning to school for the 2022 season, sources tell ESPN. Michigan was, in the words of one source, “elated” to get Harbaugh’s decision.

I've had the opinion (admittedly based on speculation) that this was kind of Harbaugh's exploration of his last real chance to go back to the NFL, and this would match up with that.

But I think there's a non-zero chance that the "no" came from the Vikings, especially when combined with the Flores lawsuit and the Balas report. But who knows.

Agreed. He was in a low buyout contract and coming off a fantastic turnaround season- absolutely the best time to pursue the NFL since he took the Michigan job. NFL was always going to be option for him- how many successful NFL head coaches willingly take a permanent “demotion” to college? This was a known possibility when he was hired here. I’m assuming his terms and conditions weren’t palatable to NFL owners - I can’t imagine it had anything to do with money. Or he just doesn’t fit with the youth movement in head coach selection. Who knows…

"It's only money" and "I'd do this job [at Michigan] for free."  Jim Harbaugh, 2021

Have to admit I struggle with the incongruence of this recent statement by JH and this NFL HC blitz of his.  It seems like he had no takers and so Michigan is the booby prize?  I'm happy for his 2021 success and always think people should follow their dreams but I didn't really like how this all went down.

Maybe in the back of his mind, he knew this was his last big chance if he wanted to go back to the NFL. And he knew if he was wondering about it, he wasn't fully doing his job as UM HC. So he goes and interviews, scratches his itch, realizes its not what he wants to do and he wants to be at UM, and now his mind is clear and he can be all-in about UM until he retires, knowing he at least explored if he truly wanted to go back to the NFL or not and got his answer.

The Superbowl. The man was right on the cusp of one. It doesn't get any bigger than that in football, so you have to try if there's a chance to get a chance to get there again. I don't begrudge him any of this. Though on national signing day, it doesn't help where he's at right now; here's hoping recruiting goes well and he puts the defense in good hands.

"For the 2022 Season"...I'll be interested to see what the new contract holds.

Edit: Just saw the second tweet. Apparently staying at Michigan as long as they will have him!

Wasn't Schefter also the "Oakland is still in play" guy?

I mean, I'm glad if he's coming back, and will probably live out his coaching days here, but there have been so many rumors all around.

Well, this question has been answered...

Should I stay or should I go now?
Should I stay or should I go now?
If I go there will be trouble
And if I stay it will be double
So come on and let me know
