Happy Chanukah!

May your latkes be crispy, your jelly donuts plentiful…and most of all may your menorahs shine some light on this increasingly dark world.  Enjoy your 8 crazy nights!

Zalman and Moishe get into a car accident. Zal sees Moishe laying on the pavement after flying through the windshield.

Zal folds his coat and puts it under Moishe's head.

Zal says "Moishe, are you comfortable?"

Moishe: "well, I make a living."

There are many similar jokes.

One of my favorites is that a Jew and a non-Jew walk in to a crowded restaurant.

The non-Jew says, "wow.  look how crowded this place is.  The food must be great."

The Jew says, "this place must be a goldmine!"

(I'm Jewish, so i'm allowed to share these jokes.)

Happy Hanukkah to all of my fellow MGoJews. For my 8 presents, I would like:

1. Win over Bama in the Rose Bowl

2. Win over Wash/Texas in the NC game

3. A Harbaugh extension to be announced asap

4. JJ to return

5. That 6’5” portal received from IU to come to M

6. For the remainder of our players with eligibility to decide to return

7. To see OSU’s “in the portal number” continue to rise, and

8. To see the B1G realize that it is an embarrassment and to fire little Tony.

Not asking for too much, am I?

As a lapsed Lutheran living in Grand Rapids with a Jewish wife from Huntington Woods, I’d like to wish everyone a peaceful and joyous Hanukkah.

I wonder if to the Greeks this holiday feels kinda like MSU fans still having shirts and sharing quotes about the 2008 game. Like, yeah, you beat us, but we were going through a whole thing right then that was really more about us than you.

This year - more than ever - we MGoMOT's (members of the tribe) need as much light and hope as we can get.

If you are not Jewish but have Jewish people in your life, you can assume that they are currently NOT "ok."

Please make an effort to reach out to them and let them know you are thinking of them.

I was so heartened that I had so many non-Jewish colleagues and clients reach out to me after October 7...just to let me know they were thinking of me.

EDIT:  Based on the comments below my post, I would kindly ask everyone to keep their opinions re: anti-semitism to themselves. It is a complex situation...and a nuanced analysis (a UFR, if you will) shows that there are issues on the right and the left relative to their views on Jews and Israel.

you are over-thinking this by a lot.   i responded to another comment. i won't comment on the issue further.  that has nothing to do with whether or not you want to comment, call me names, whatever.  i only said i'm not talking about it beyond the one short response.

try not to be so easily offended. might be making your life miserable.

My synagogue just hosted Modi, a Jewish comedian.

His set was packed full of tropes about Jews.  The entire crowd of 1,000 people -  including many clergy members - was laughing to the point of exhaustion.

The reality is that, while we all have much more in common than not, we are all also the product of our culture and religion.

That's why you see so many comedians referring to - and making fun of - their religious/ethnic/sexual identity.  There is a very funny lesbian comedian whose entire set consists of jokes related to her identity.

There's a way to laugh at our (perceived) differences without it becoming harmful.

I'm 100% gentile, but I did date a Jewish girl at Michigan in the late 90s.  I did go to the temple (I think it was on Telegraph Rd) with her and her family around then for Passover.  We had to go through a metal detector to get into the temple (I believe one of the intifadas was going on).  I thought that was crazy.  My girlfriend said it was hard to be outwardly Jewish then.  I can't imagine how hard it is now.

Stay safe!

Happy Hanukah to my fellow Hanukah celebrants. Check out Dave Grohl's The Hanukah Sessions, eight nights of songs by Jewish artists. This is 2021, but they did 2022 as well, with the artists. Who Knew Pink was Jewish? Or Geddy Lee, aka Gershon Weinrib? This one is Night 2, from 2021, The Ramones.
