Grading the recruiting class

Submitted by TK on December 16th, 2021 at 11:19 AM

Overall I feel like this is a solid B+ class, which is remarkable given the circumstances of last season. Here are my grades, let me know if you agree or disagree with them. Also of note, my grades are partially based on need and the depth chart at that position.

QB: B-

*We are not Ohio State or Alabama so we do not stack five stars on top of each other. But I think that given the depth chart of McCarthy and McNamara starting for the next 2 to 3 seasons this was a pretty solid class. We got two guys with upside who can potentially provide some depth or starting down the road. Getting an elite QB next year is a must.

RB: C+

*Similar situation here. Stokes is a decent enough prospect but we have Edwards who is going to be a sophomore and Dunlap who will be coming off a redshirt season. Did not really need an immediate impact guy this year. Next year we will need to land a top running back.

WR: A

*Obviously a great class. Clemons could be Nico Collins but fast. Morris might have been a top 50 player if not for an injury. And Walker definitely has a high upside.

TE: A-

*Harbaugh loves tight ends and we got two of them with a lot of talent. Both seem to be in the mold of guys who can run and make plays in the passing game as opposed to just blockers.

OL: B+

*Given the number of young OL on the roster, I think three was the right number. And getting three tackles was equally important. I will count Gentry in this class and he moved the grade up a full grade. Getting Connerly would make it an A, but that is doubtful.

DT: B+

*I’m actually not too disappointed by missing out on Walker. We got Rooks and Benny last year and this year got two guys with huge potential no pun intended. For once it looks like we will have great depth at this position for the foreseeable future.

DE/Edge: B-

Would have been an A if we kept Burke and Henry assuming he does not sign with us. Getting Moore was huge and we are hoping Pollard turns into a Uche type, but we seem to be missing a natural pass rusher. Will definitely need to address that next season if we are unable to get anyone by February.

LB: B

*Rolder seems like the classic Big Ten thumper who will be an all conference guy by the time he’s an upperclassman. Spurlock is a guy with a lot of speed and athleticism that was very underrated. Sabb could end up here also.

Secondary: A

*I’m going to group them all together because a lot of these guys are versatile and could play either corner or safety. This was a haul. Even the lower ranked guys like Dent feel like they could end up being very good.

This is both mean-spirited and obtuse, given that the OP engages in his own (IMO valuable) evaluation.

Two things in relation to other sources' evals, though. If we are, more or less, being ranked as the number ten class nationally, and there are 350 (?) some-odd D1 schools, then I think that could be seen to nudge this class into A- territory in aggregate. And it's always worth pointing out that classes must be judged through time, especially in cases where you're already in a strong position with players on board. Nowhere does this strike me as clearer than in the case of QB for us, where you have two players stacked, a future recruit who would slot in perfectly if all goes well. Here, taking a gamble on an unpolished but promising prospect makes all the sense in the world, and will never pump up your overall grade.

Yeah, TK is a pretty tough grader. A ranking of 9/130 in FBS means we are in the top 7% of teams, which would translate to about a 93% on a test. Depending on the teacher, that is usually either an A or an A-.

I think little Jimmy Harbaugh will be complaining to his mom later this afternoon, and TK should be anticipating a strongly worded email and a request for a parent-teacher conference tomorrow...

Yes. I tend to grade fairly tough on individual components, then that way if someone is at a 79 or 78 it's fine to move them up to a B- once I put it all together and see their final score. The ones who do complain are often the ones with crappy grades who probably should have gotten worse grades and I was being a little too kind in the first place. It also helps having a mandatory curve I can point to, although in some good classes it can screw some students over.

When I was TA at Berkeley most of the Biology students were pre-med and super concerned about their grades. 1st quiz of the semester I received twenty-something requests to regrade the quiz (some with full writeups as to why they deserved at least 3.8 points out of four instead of 3 out of four, etc.).

There were ~50 people in the class.

So, I did nothing until the following week. I got up in front of the class, and said "here's the deal. I will regrade your quizzes if you want me to, but I'm not regrading just the question you didn't get full points for. I regrading the entire quiz/test/assignment from top to bottom. It is a better than 50:50 chance you'll end up with a worse grade." Many complained to the prof., but I had cleared this with him before hand and he LOVED the idea.

No one asked me to regrade anything for the next year.

Yep, I did undergrad at Cal and this was the policy across the board for all exam regrades I think for every professor I ever had. My current grading policy as a faculty member is to do the same and emphasize the "fine tooth comb" nature of the regrade.

It seems like you said you had no inside knowledge in a previous post.  Do you feel that you can evaluate the quality of recruits now?  Are you a coach or a scout?  Or is this just feelings, nothing more than feelings?

I agree with most of this!! I wouldn't doubt Sabb moving to LB in the future. I think a very solid all around class with very underrated players. I believe there will be some house-hold names from this class in a couple of years. My picks would be Johnson, Clemons, Moore, Loveland, Berry and Sabb. Very excited for the potential of the 2022 class. On to 2023.

DT needs to be A- imo. Graham is gonna be star and the the kind of penetrating DT we haven't had since Mo Hurst and Willie Henry. Grant will also be a nice add: finally a big 300+ lbs NT that's necessary in order to run what Macdonald wants.

I would say Clemons IS Nico Collins fast but FASTER (channeling my inner Fred Jackson).  His timed 40 is faster than Nico's, is it not?

After a quick Google search it appears Nico's 40 time was 4.43s at the pro day.  Clemons posted 4.37s.  So yeah, Clemons is a tick faster.
