Grad-transfer OT Calvin Anderson on Tim Drevno's resignation

Submitted by BoFlex on

In short, Anderson said the news caught him by surprise, but he has not had time to decide how to factor it into his recruitment:

A few weeks ago Anderson called Drevno a huge factor and big reason he may come to Michigan.

Anderson told Maize ‘n’ Brew he found out about Drevno’s departure from the program this morning, and said the he was surprised by the news. As far as Drevno’s resignation impacting Anderson committing to Michigan, Anderson said he hasn’t had enough time to process the news yet.

At least recently, it seems a lot more prevalent in relative terms, although I am sure the overall percentage of the student-athlete population that actually transfers has to be less than 1%. I think the NCAA actually did a study of football and a few other sports from 2010 to 2016 and in football, the number jumped from somewhere around 20 to over 100 in that space. Not sure how long the actual bylaw - 14.6.1, I think - has been in place.

In industry, if you've got a guy running a project and it's clear he's over his head you either a) completely remove him from that project (which is basically impossible to do in college football in the middle of the season) or b) relegate him to a very small portion of the project which at minimum does not allow him to negatively influence a deliverable...and perhaps he can have a small value add.

I think it'll be him or Stueber. Warinner is very much a "best 5" guy, so that tells me that Spanellis, Onwenu, Ruiz, and Bredeson will all be starting. That means Spanellis at RT to me because Bredeson's pass pro has not been good enough to kick him out. That means Stueber and Hudson competing for LT and I think Stueber has the advantage having been on the OL already and having a little more length than Hudson. Both are exceptional athletes, but I think Stueber's length wins out.

He was mostly the 6th OL this year where he would come in and line up as an extra tackle. When he played in the 5 man line he played on the interior, including C in the bowl game. He's 6'6 and the smartest guy on the team. He can play RT and will get a look there this offseason.

That’s under the impression that Spanellis is better than Stuebner and/or Hudson. Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t. I just dont think I’ve personally seen enough out of any of the three to make that assumption. Hudson and Stuebner both could have been better than Spanellis, but also needed their redshirts.

He was better than both of them last year, which is one reason both of them redshirted. Neither Stueber nor Hudson were in the best 7 OL on the team last year.

Now, could that change in one offseason so that both Hudson and Stueber pass Spanellis? Sure. Could happen, but it's probably not likely. Spanellis has the experience advantage now. He's a little longer than Hudson. He's strong - it'd be a safe bet to say that his extra year in the weight room gives him an advantage still. The coaches clearly love him. Stueber and Hudson are both coming from behind Spanellis. It's possible that they pass him, but it's not a given and maybe not likely.

Every one of those kids was recruited by Drevno.  Huh...

He had some high profile misses, but he still brought in some pretty good players.  The Isaiah kid, from NY, that went to UGA was the worst.  But that, I'm convinced, was a cash deal that Drev could do nothing about.  The others were all trending for other programs as much as for Michigan.  I was looking forward to seeing what he could do with the OL as his sole focus this year.  I won't shed any tears, though, because Warinner is a capable replacement and seems more suited to the OL for the offense it appears that Harbaugh wants to implement, what with McElwain on the staff now.

Not big enough if Warinner doesn't go visit (i.e. if he's not invited to go visit) the family. It helps that Anderson is connecting with Shea and believes that Shea will be eligible, and that he has been effusive in his praise for Dudek. Problem is he also had a relationship with Drevno and trusted him. So, if the kid was 51/49 Texas before this, he's probably 60/40 Texas afterwards.

That being said, if Warinner can go sell the kid on his record being even a little bit better than Drevno's and strike up that old connection with Dad, then it might work out. I think if Warinner doesn't get face-to-face time with Calvin then this one is done. If he does, then maybe.

Is JBB officially not coming back?  If he does come back I think he is still a plug and play at RT.  One of the better run blockers on the team.  Pass protection could use some work but it was servicable last year.  Another year and he could be average or slightly better.  Also, if the football Gods are kind and somehow we end up with Anderson we're in good shape.

Anderson-Bredeson-Ruiz-Onwenu-JBB

Thats a well above average offensive line with the potential to be a dominant run blocking unit.
