Grad-transfer OT Calvin Anderson on Tim Drevno's resignation
In short, Anderson said the news caught him by surprise, but he has not had time to decide how to factor it into his recruitment:
A few weeks ago Anderson called Drevno a huge factor and big reason he may come to Michigan.
Anderson told Maize ‘n’ Brew he found out about Drevno’s departure from the program this morning, and said the he was surprised by the news. As far as Drevno’s resignation impacting Anderson committing to Michigan, Anderson said he hasn’t had enough time to process the news yet.

How long have grad transfers even been a thing?
February 23rd, 2018 at 6:39 PM ^
At least recently, it seems a lot more prevalent in relative terms, although I am sure the overall percentage of the student-athlete population that actually transfers has to be less than 1%. I think the NCAA actually did a study of football and a few other sports from 2010 to 2016 and in football, the number jumped from somewhere around 20 to over 100 in that space. Not sure how long the actual bylaw - 14.6.1, I think - has been in place.

Realizing that Drevno leaving may have just cost us Calvin Anderson...

If Warinner is as advertised, then maybe he can do a Beilein on the offensive line and coach them up and get them playing as a solid front.

Close second. Patterson is all over him though. That should tell us more about Drevno than anything else.

that patterson is doing more recruiting than drevno?

In industry, if you've got a guy running a project and it's clear he's over his head you either a) completely remove him from that project (which is basically impossible to do in college football in the middle of the season) or b) relegate him to a very small portion of the project which at minimum does not allow him to negatively influence a deliverable...and perhaps he can have a small value add.

Wwas Pep told the same thing. It might be nothing, but it seems like we here more about Pep recruiting than we did in the past.

Warinner was an assistant at Army when Anderson's dad played there. Probably need a Warinner visit to the kid's family if we want any chance here going forward.
February 23rd, 2018 at 7:26 PM ^
Quick, someone fly Harbaugh and Warinner down to texas on the family jet.
February 23rd, 2018 at 7:37 PM ^
Head coaches only get to make one in home visit, so they'd send someone else with him.
February 23rd, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
Warinner was at Army at the same time his dad was a DB there
February 23rd, 2018 at 5:07 PM ^
And coach up what we have better than the status quo. Would love to have Anderson, but love even more a coaching staff that we can be excited about on offense!
February 23rd, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
Agreed, the best coach is more important. Plus I think Warinner could make a pretty damn competent line out of Stueber-Bredeson-Ruiz-Onwenu-Spanellis.

February 23rd, 2018 at 5:30 PM ^
I think it'll be him or Stueber. Warinner is very much a "best 5" guy, so that tells me that Spanellis, Onwenu, Ruiz, and Bredeson will all be starting. That means Spanellis at RT to me because Bredeson's pass pro has not been good enough to kick him out. That means Stueber and Hudson competing for LT and I think Stueber has the advantage having been on the OL already and having a little more length than Hudson. Both are exceptional athletes, but I think Stueber's length wins out.

Spanellis is a tackle
could be wrong
February 23rd, 2018 at 5:43 PM ^
He was mostly the 6th OL this year where he would come in and line up as an extra tackle. When he played in the 5 man line he played on the interior, including C in the bowl game. He's 6'6 and the smartest guy on the team. He can play RT and will get a look there this offseason.

He was better than both of them last year, which is one reason both of them redshirted. Neither Stueber nor Hudson were in the best 7 OL on the team last year.
Now, could that change in one offseason so that both Hudson and Stueber pass Spanellis? Sure. Could happen, but it's probably not likely. Spanellis has the experience advantage now. He's a little longer than Hudson. He's strong - it'd be a safe bet to say that his extra year in the weight room gives him an advantage still. The coaches clearly love him. Stueber and Hudson are both coming from behind Spanellis. It's possible that they pass him, but it's not a given and maybe not likely.
February 23rd, 2018 at 7:52 PM ^
regains his starting job. Is that a sure thing?

Every one of those kids was recruited by Drevno. Huh...
He had some high profile misses, but he still brought in some pretty good players. The Isaiah kid, from NY, that went to UGA was the worst. But that, I'm convinced, was a cash deal that Drev could do nothing about. The others were all trending for other programs as much as for Michigan. I was looking forward to seeing what he could do with the OL as his sole focus this year. I won't shed any tears, though, because Warinner is a capable replacement and seems more suited to the OL for the offense it appears that Harbaugh wants to implement, what with McElwain on the staff now.
February 23rd, 2018 at 5:40 PM ^
Bredeson and James Hudson were recruited by Mattison, Stueber was recruited by Don Brown, and Ruiz was recruited by Partridge. Drevno recruited Onwenu and Spanellis.
I wasn't the staunch Drevno hater that many were, but Warinner is a better OL coach, at least in the last 5 years or so.

Not big enough if Warinner doesn't go visit (i.e. if he's not invited to go visit) the family. It helps that Anderson is connecting with Shea and believes that Shea will be eligible, and that he has been effusive in his praise for Dudek. Problem is he also had a relationship with Drevno and trusted him. So, if the kid was 51/49 Texas before this, he's probably 60/40 Texas afterwards.
That being said, if Warinner can go sell the kid on his record being even a little bit better than Drevno's and strike up that old connection with Dad, then it might work out. I think if Warinner doesn't get face-to-face time with Calvin then this one is done. If he does, then maybe.

I didnt neg any of your other baseless speculation and hot takes but pulling percentages out of your ass certainly deserves one.
February 23rd, 2018 at 8:26 PM ^
He's telling us what he thinks the chances are. He's not saying what they actually are, which no one (proably not even Anderson) knows. Certainly a deserved -1 for climbing on your high horse without reason.

in the context of who a recruit is going to pick. Sometimes, they've already made up their mind. Unless they're flipping a coin, there isn't math involved. It's just guessing.
February 23rd, 2018 at 7:33 PM ^
247 lists Drevno on all of them, which is why I listed it that way. But this isn't the hill to die on! Warinner is a capable replacement, and it was time to move on from Drev. It was clear that was the plan, anyway.
February 23rd, 2018 at 7:36 PM ^
I appreciate the clarity you bring. Forget sometimes that many are involved in the recruiting process.

Is JBB officially not coming back? If he does come back I think he is still a plug and play at RT. One of the better run blockers on the team. Pass protection could use some work but it was servicable last year. Another year and he could be average or slightly better. Also, if the football Gods are kind and somehow we end up with Anderson we're in good shape.
Anderson-Bredeson-Ruiz-Onwenu-JBB
Thats a well above average offensive line with the potential to be a dominant run blocking unit.
