Grad-transfer OT Calvin Anderson on Tim Drevno's resignation

Submitted by BoFlex on

In short, Anderson said the news caught him by surprise, but he has not had time to decide how to factor it into his recruitment:

A few weeks ago Anderson called Drevno a huge factor and big reason he may come to Michigan.

Anderson told Maize ‘n’ Brew he found out about Drevno’s departure from the program this morning, and said the he was surprised by the news. As far as Drevno’s resignation impacting Anderson committing to Michigan, Anderson said he hasn’t had enough time to process the news yet.

I just don't see him being a backup.  You can make an argument that his pass pro is bad.  I think he improved throughout the year to be servicable and think that will continue in 2018.  We already know that hes a plus run blocker so why not plug him and know that at the very least we should have a strong run game?  Not to mention if Shea is eligible he gives some added escapability to help cover up some pass protections woes.

People say this all the time when you lose a coach and you don't want to lose a recruit.

I know we all said the opposite when the RB coach at OSU quit right after they signed Mike Weber.

If I were picking a school, my coach would be incredibly important to me. I would pick a coach that I thought gave me the best opportunity to play in the NFL. I almost assuredly would pick the coach, not the school.

he does not have a long pro career in front of him - having Rice and Michigan on his academic resume does him a world of good.  He can position the hell out of that as "not just a football player" - both really good schools.  Oklahoma and Auburn?  Football meat markets...

Stay a Michigan man, Mr. Anderson. (No Matrix reference intended)

a school. It's just to prepare him for the NFL. He'd only be a student here for a semester, then train for the draft combine. He'll still have that Rice degree to fall back on, with a serious sounding major. He'll be fine wherever he goes.

Not really.

In the latest US News rankings Michigan is 4th and Texas is 18th.

In the latest Times Higher Education rankings, Michigan is 2nd and Texas is 10th.

In the latest Forbes rankings Michigan is 4th and Texas is 19th.

Yes, Texas is a fine institution.  But it is not at Michigan's level.

He mentioned wanting to play against the best, specifically naming Bosa. That doesn't change, nor does practicing against the best every day if he joins M.

just to increase our chances of getting this Anderson kid, he and the rest of our line would still ultimately be coached by...Drevno!?

I actually don't think this is that big of a deal. If he were to come here, it wouldn't be because of Drevno. It'd be because of Harbaugh/Ann Arbor/the university itself.

He has stated that but A. one should always be cautious in taking a recruits stated criteria as 100% true and complete, and B. Anderson specifically cited Drevno's NFL pedigree in discussing why Michigan was a great fit.

I don't believe that being from Austin and growing up a Longhorns fan will have zero weight in his final decision. I just don't. If that were true Michigan would be far and away the favorite and that doesn't seem to be the case.

^^^This. I like the depth and all but if this guy was THAT GOOD....he’d be prepping for the combine right now.
I gotta tip my hat to him tho...he is the Belle of the mall around here. It’s gotta feel pretty good to be wanted that bad. Just sayin’....

There's an enormous gulf between guys who are prepping for the combine and what we have as our Oline right now. Anyone that could bring our average up, even for a year, would be welcome. At this point, we really need all of the help we can get as we are very young or just not that talented on the line.

Anderson would likely start day 1 if he could get the playbook down in time.

He was picking Texas anyways so finishing second wasn't a reason to keep Drevno. For previous examples see Devery Hamilton, Isaiah Wilson, Jarret Patterson, Nicholas Petit-Frere, etc.

Is that it's hard to get guys, even coaches who used to be involved in recruiting at the college level in the past, to embrace recruiting once they've had a taste of the NFL coaching lifestyle.

On a side note, not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but Drevno gone has a direct positive impact on Devontae Dobbs according to Sam Webb. And he was very very positive about that fact. He did not say that Michigan now leads, so don't think I'm getting to that - He mentioned that work still needs to be done, but he was very intent on saying that this most definitely helps Dobbs recruitment to Michigan. This might have more to do with Warinner than Drevno, but I don't think that matters. Dobbs seems to be back in play.

If Warinner is close to "the best OL coach in the country" (as has been quoted by some reputable sources) and our OL improves, I would not be shocked to see Dobbs and/or other big time OL recruits finally signing with Michigan for the 2019 class.

His coach is a huge Don Brown fan, he goes to the same school that Kwity came from (aka they were teammates two years ago), and we've been by to visit him multiple times already. I think his current CBs are purely speculative and I think we get him.
