Good article about possible transfers to Michigan

Submitted by jbibiza on November 15th, 2023 at 4:23 AM

Five interesting guys who are likely to go into the portal, three of whom we recruited heavily.
One typo in the section about the Bama WR - they mistake Tyler Morris for Roman Wilson.
Of course we hope that JJ and Wilson come back next year, but I would be happy taking any or all of these guys.

Cynical but honest question here: Do most of them care about credits?

They are usually not intending to graduate, so what does it matter if they are short credits to graduate when they leave?  That would already be the case when they leave early.

Some may look to graduate later in their lives, but they are probably not worried about counting credits at this juncture.  The CFB opportunity (and potentially NFL) is what will matter most to them.

[ EDITED: Wolverine614 posted essentially this while I was typing this up. Quicker on the draw there.]

Just for clarity -- this is per Seth in a piece before the season.

It's not admissions, it's the individual departments accepting credits that is the issue.

It's not necessarily that the students want to (always) keep credits for a degree, but rather it's NCAA progress policies that determine whether athletes are eligible to compete. For example, if you're entering your third year, you need to have X credits toward a degree in order to be eligible to play. Departments at Michigan tend to deny a lot of transfer credit, making admitted transfers ineligible.

This is why Michigan football focuses primarily on grad transfers (no worries about maintaining eligibility) and transfers that have completed one year only, like Hausmann (easier to receive credit for first-year courses and also more wiggle room if credits are denied).

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you have to show progression towards a degree based on credits/years of college you've been in. Think  KBA said Leigha Brown when she came from Nebraska had to pay for classes in the summer to get caught up, and if memory serves me right Shea had to take summer classes to catch up too.

Edit: I see I have been beaten to this comment twice.

I rather go after Arch Manning. Ewers announced that he was back in Texas, and Manning committed to Texas with the expectation that he'd sit out in his freshman year and then start the following year. It hasn't been announced, but Arch would be a lot easier to get because he's a freshman and it's easier to get admitted in the admission via transfer credits.

Lol exactly. Everyone is just assuming he even wants to leave. Or that any of these guys do. Isn't Domani Jackson from SoCal? If his development is behind, there's no guarantee he gets playing time behind guys who have been in the system.

I think an experienced LB, a true pass rusher, another Barner type, obviously OL, and a bridge QB, but someone who has a couple years experience starting at a good P5 program, not a backup, or a redshirt frosh who hasn't taken any snaps.

Have you guys watched Murphy play?  Don't think he gives Harbaugh the warm fuzzies. Manning isn't happening but I would love all the press about Michigan, Eli & Peyton coming to a game..that would be fun for the defending national champs.

If JJ leaves I am not too worried about the QB position. There will be A LOT of QBs who may be a Day 3 draft pick who could go but could benefit a lot from one year as the starting QB for Michigan.

We will land someone who probably at the floor is a Devin O'Leary/Sam Hartman level, with the chance to hit on an even higher guy. Riley Leonard and Michael Pratt are at the top of my list.

This sentence says it all:

Last year, Michigan capitalized on its popularity by bringing in impact players Ernest Hausmann, Josaiah Stewart, Drake Nugent, AJ Barner, Josh Wallace and LaDarius Henderson.

Michigan hit on ALL of them.

Michigan is the best Portal "recruiting" team in the country.  It has more than made up for our high school recruiting that has been good but not great.

If we can get Ono to lighten up on the Michigan transfer restrictions, we can cook in this area.

I think even with our admission difficulties we can probably make things work. Anyone who has been in their program for 3 years can probably graduate and adding grad transfers isn't an issue. Or, someone like Hausmann might have to go the Shea route and not worry about their credits transferring.

For example, I don't think we'd have any issue getting someone like Dante Moore in (even if he wasn't at UCLA), because I do think an incoming second year guy would probably be okay with letting a lot of credits from their first year dissolve in order to come to U-M.

I'm seeing people speculate about Dante Moore too, now that Chip Kelly is likely getting fired. Anyone been watching him and have an idea of how he's been playing, his completion percentage looks dangerously low at 52%

JJ and Wilson are gone.  They'd be nuts to come back to Ann Arbor.  NFL scouts are already salivating over both of them (especially McCarthy.)

This article seems like it's based on nothing other than the author putting together a fantasy team. Should we add Walter Nolen and Domani Jackson? Sure, let's add a few more five stars while we're at it, maybe Marvin Harrison Jr is tired of losing the big game and will ask to play one more year for Michigan.

I think Dante Moore is more likely to come back than Murphy, and I'm not banking on either QB.  Nolen is not going to leave the SEC, I can promise you that - too much money, and while he's not quite the #2 player in the country good he's certainly going to have his pick of suitors.

If UM goes after anyone on that list I suspect it'll be in the secondary, so Jackson is appealing on that front.

I would absolutely do flips if we could get Nolan and Jackson. I wanted those recruits so bad. And if they fire Chip Kelly there is a real chance to go and get Dante Moore.

Ewers is apparently 75%+ returning to UT, so why not JJ?

Ewers was rated higher by NFL scouts before he was injured and is expected to play again this week.

Maybe NIL money is enough to keep happy QBs in college for an extra year?
