GERG Talks about the Defense wih Scout

Submitted by DrWolverine23 on
heres the link http://michigan.scout.com/2/946362.html ...........GERG seems really hesitant when answering the question of whether or not the defense could be better even with the losses of BG and Warren. So the million dollar question: how improved do you think the defense really will be?

I had the same thought as you, but what is he supposed to say? Three of the best players are leaving the defense, spring practice hasn't started yet, and incoming freshman are still in high school. Saying "I do not know, it will sort itself out" two dozen times may be a lot...but there is a lot the staff doesn't know in mid February that will sort itself out before the first game.

Gerg is looking forward to the spring and summer even more than we are. This defense could be a spectacular fail, or it could gel together and become competent enough to allow the offense to lead us to a bowl. Noone knows, including him. What I do know is: We're really playing with fire if we're expecting many of our 2010 recruits to contribute right away. I'm effeing excited, though.

Robinson doesn't seem hesitant about whether the defense will be better - he seems like a good, old fashioned football coach. Most coaches will say stuff like "Time will tell" and "We'll see" and "Other people are going to have to step up." I don't take what he said as a negative sign in any way. I do like what he said at the end, though, about Roh. He mentioned a couple guys by name and then spent a couple sentences talking about Roh in particular. I thought he would be our best recruit from the 2009 class, and so far he seems to be doing well in all aspects - classroom, locker room, and on the field.

Whenever Bo was asked about a recruiting class his standard response was to ask him in four years, and unless he had a team full of All-Americans returning for their senior years he never spouted off about how great Michigan was going to be. All he said was that they were going to work hard to compete for a conference title. Gerg has been around long enough to know that shooting his mouth off about how great his defense is going to be is the stupidest thing he can do, especially since so many of the talented players on D are so damn young. We're just going to have to wait and see what happens on the field.

I wonder if he just said this to make Scout happy. Interesting, nonetheless:
Question: How much of that recruiting service stuff do you think is just bunk; where it is just guys who maybe no more qualified than anyone else besides you at this table? Greg Robinson: “I do not know that. I do not know. I like to think that they find ways. What they do is that they do a lot of talking to people too and it is really a process of elimination in some ways. I think that they do a pretty good job. They provide a lot of information to a lot of people. Not all of it is gospel.”

Although were going to miss the spectacular moments that BG provided I would think that we will make up for those with more consistent play amongst the many that return and will remain under the same system and coach for the first time in three years. As for the secondary Warren was forced to play soft and conservative not trusting in his help. Look for this young secondary to also play soft as they learn however they should also benefit from another year in a consistent scheme.

I love Gerg. He's got great experience, is a proven coach, and he's liked and respected by his peers and players. He's the perfect fit with w/ the fiery coaching style of RR. If you haven't already read Brian's write up of the defense a couple days ago. I think the coaches are building the talent and depth needed for Michigan to have a very good defense once again.

i agree, i hate when i talk to people who watch michigan football, but don't really follow it, and all they have to say is Robinson needs to be fired. He and Michigan will be fine once their players gain some experience and like someone mentioned, being under the same D for another year will be huge.

I think the defense has just as good of a chance of becoming top 3-4 in conference as finishing 9-11. There is talent if you consider the recruiting sites to have any ability to assess players. The defense we will field this year I'm sure has a higher per player star ranking than Wisconsin or Iowa at present and I would argue at any point in the last 20 years for either one of them. Wisconsin and Iowa would have both killed to be able to recruit most of the kids we will field on D this year. Its a matter of learning the system, learning to depend on eachother, and gaining confidence. If they can build solid defenses out of the table scraps of the Midwest, we certainly can build one out of the players we currently have on tap.

what really gives me a good mount of hope is the fact that outside of the crap teams on our schedule (directional schools and delaware state) we turned in probably our best defensive performance on the last game of the season...and we saw guys like william campbell at least start to get playing time at the end of the season...so maybe they were starting to really get the defense...could OSU have scored more? probably, but its not like they were trying not to score...throughout the season everyone that was any good could throw or run on us at will, so to only give up 14 points to the opposing offense on the last game of the season, let alone to the team that won the big ten and the rose bowl is pretty darn good..

The scout article didnt say anything. I read the whole thing expecting some kind of piece of information about starters or how a player is looking but all I get is "I dont know blah blah blibbity blah blah". Wow that was dissapointing

No more kirk cousin 43-yard runs, please. And no more tight ends scoring on long passing plays. They really arent that fast.

We'll be scoring enough next year to only need a workable defense IMO. I hope GERG blitzes a lot more than last year, although last year we got burned no matter what we seemed to do.
