If Jalen Pickett is indeed the sole player PSU depends on to handle the ball, give him full court pressure from the outset. Switch defenders to keep them fresh. Make him do everything the hard way!
From these descriptions, we may be stronger at safety versus 2016. Corners will have to learn on the field. Lewis, Stribling and Peppers were monsters last year.
The Wisconsin win over ranked opponent had W needing lots of field goals, and a generally mediocre offense. Now many are euphoric about a Wisky team with a few glaring issues. Young oline, unknown defense. Reminds me of Michigan in 1984 opener, beating 1983 national champ and #1 Miami. We intercepted Bernie Kosar 6 times, and only scored 22 points. Be cautious judging any team based on the opener.
"But do let me reiterate the spirit of Michigan. It is based upon a deathless loyalty to Michigan and all her ways; an enthusiasm that makes it second nature for Michigan men to spread the gospel of their university to the world's distant outposts; a conviction that nowhere is there a better university, in any way, than this Michigan of ours."
Phelps does not meet this definition. Same goes for most people who are fans of Michigan sports.
Here is what Fielding H. Yost when he pretty much coined the phrase:
"But do let me reiterate the spirit of Michigan. It is based upon a deathless loyalty to Michigan and all her ways; an enthusiasm that makes it second nature for Michigan men to spread the gospel of their university to the world's distant outposts; a conviction that nowhere is there a better university, in any way, than this Michigan of ours."
Note this says nothing about coaching under Bo, having played at Michigan or for Bo, or having gone to the university. I have to believe that Jim Hackett would agree with Yost. Let's gone on with it! Go Blue!
Living in PA, this shirt hits the mark. State Penn fans are pissed than anyone beats them, let alone for 8 straight games. And the excuses get better every year. Love the Jake Elwood reference on the shirt!
Every time I see those Allstate nets on TV, I think about the nets at Michigan Stadium having a BIG BLOCK M! That would be great motivation for our kicker, and give the opposing kicker nightmares when getting ready to kick he sees the "M" going up behind the goal posts.
Yes, Zoltan was the only kicker ever to serve as Captain. Interesting in this list for those who were never captains. Leach and Henne come to mind. And very very few juniors.
ACs last home game was against Purdue, and he burned the Purdue dbacks all game. Had 2 TDs. They started to announce seniors in the 4th quarter. As the next play is ready, the PA announcers says "And there is one more senior left to announce." The crowd rose to its feet, shouted "AC AC AC AC........". The play finished, and from the press box "and from Riviera Beach, Florida, #1, Anthony Carter". The stadium goes louder, and AC walks off the field towards Bo. He was a great receiver. Yes, the greatest receiver ever at Meechigan.
I think all of the benefits of this game would happen if we played a home-and-home series with Alabama. Call it THE start of the football season, just like in Dallas. ESPN would gush, Gameday would come, ticket prices could increase, AND we could hear the band. Two years in a row!
The bloom is off Dave Brandon. What is he thinking?
Charlie Baggett, the coach at Tennessee, was a QB at MooU in the 70s. He was the prime reason that they went on probation then. I remember Charlie having to return a Buick Electra, and other things he received from using the credit card of a Spartoon booster. The photo of Charlie in the papers after he had to return the car was a joy to see.
In relation to Bo's headstone. I went to the cemetery several years ago, saw Bo's grave. Noted that Millie's name is not on the headstone with him, but Cathy. Millie is buried very close by. Couldn't find either Yost or Ufer, though have been told they are in vicinity of Bo. Where are they?
Today is anniversary of Biakabutuka running wild over the Buckeyes!
That was a great explanation of how most of the Penn State alum I know are feeling. This situation reminds me of "A Lifetime of Observations" by John Wooden, and what he said about athletes(coaches) as heroes.
Athletes should be good role models, but not heroes. A role model is someone that those who love you would want you to be like. A hero is just someone the general public holds up to acclaim. They are often different people.
Kramer's No. 87 never will be worn by another Wolverine as he was the epitome of the rugged defensive end and also made impossible catches as an offensive end. Kramer was a two-time All-American (1955, '56) and earned nine letters in three sports -- football, basketball and track.
I won't make the case for other players here, only defending the case of Kramer. He is one of the greatest athletes ever at Michigan. One of the last 2-way players at Michigan. And a great one. One of the few 2-time All Americans from Michigan.
Earlier post mentioned that many Mgobloggers don't know names or numbers of retired players. Probably because we/they saw Michigan football in the 90s through today, and haven't bothered to learn about earlier years. The only #s I remember are the Wistert brothers(#11) and Tom Harmon (#98). Certainly know about Gerald Ford, Ron Kramer(maybe the finest athlete ever at Michigan), and Bennie Oosterbaan. Go to the Bentley Library website, bentley.umich.edu, for a great archive of Michigan athletic history.
Woodson and Howard: Both worthy based on records. Once they retire the greatest wide-receiver in NCAA history, Anthony Carter, they can consider these guys. Sorry, Desmond doesn't hold a candle to AC.
Only in there minds, for several reasons. 1)They hired Gary Moeller as head coach in 1978, and Illinois won 5 games in 3 years. 2)Coach at Illinois, Mike White, committed NCAA violations and Bo had the audacity to say he should be fired. 3)Michigan won 70-21 in 1981(82?) over Illinois, rubbing it in since Michigan had rehired Moeller.
I went to the M vs. UofI game at Champaign in 1985. Illinois person comes up to me with a "BO HAS AIDS" button. Classy group of people. Game ended in 3-3 tie. Chris White, coaches son, misses field goal at end of game to preserve Michigan tie. Dieter Heren partially blocked the kick for Michigan.
Yes, Jimmy gave a moving speech. Sad that he died so young. And he ran one of the foulest basketball programs ever. Graduating few of his players. None of the players from the championship ever graduated. Ran afoul of the NCAA and left NCState in disgrace. None of this ever gets mentioned when DickieV goes on about his great friend. Glad that Michigan has never played in this farce of a tournament.
Stonum shows potential last year, but I don't see how his yds per catch(21.6) exceeds that of every season put up by AC or Braylon Edwards, save for AC's freshman year. Irrational exuberance at its best.
I'm guessing that Hopkins see alot of the ball this year. The other backs seem too small and prone to injury.
In school in 1976, and sat through the disappointment of 1975, OSU scoring twice in the 4th quarter to beat us. Sitting in a dorm lounge in 1976, screaming as we go up 13-0. Then Bo has Jerry Zuver, the holder, run to the right and score a 2-point conversion. We knew the game was in the bag. 1985, and OSU fans sitting around us. Cris Carter scores, and they go wild. Kolesar and Harbaugh team up right away, and we go wilder. Too bad for Kolesar, he gets hurt early the next season and is never the same.
Keep THE GAME at the end of the season. I'm sure the same sentiment and comments from OSU fans are happening. Hope we all can make a difference.
See a plain blue t-shirt with "MICHIGAN" printed on the front. The M-Den shirts are in maize, and the shirts from nearly everywhere else are yellow.
Story - University had football stadium painted in the early 80's. Canham told the painter he screwed up, and demanded he repaint and use MAIZE rather than yellow.
Why not The Maize(v. Yellow) and Blue? In the late 1800's/early 1900's, yellow started to be used to mean cowardly, and "yellow" journalism was used for muckrakers. Some historians say this is when the use of "maize" and blue came into use.
It is funny that you all rant about Sparty, paying so much attention to them. Who cares? This Michigan Man simply ignores MSC, MAC for those with a longgggg memory. Friends ask whether I hate MSU. I reply NO, can't hate something I ignore and have no respect for. Remember, most MooU grads got rejected by their Big Brother school in Ann Arbor. A MooU degree makes great toilet paper.
As for Henning's take on Michigan football, haven't heard anyone say WHY he is wrong, just that he is. His take is pretty accurate to me, though I think they go 7-5. At 6-6, Rich loses his job. He has to go at a minimum 7-5 to keep his job, though at 7-5 he may still be shown the door. While the offense progressed last year, the defense was lousy. With the offense progressing further, the possibility for 8-4 is there. Another lousy defense will make that worthless, and 6-6 it is.
Soccer is a team sport, where teamwork is one of the biggest factors in success. See the France squad, with great individuals, but lots of problems on the field. With this, you can scratch Allen Iverson off the list. He and Deion Sanders are prime examples of "I" players, who wouldn't last in soccer.
Any chance this lad is related to/son of former Michigan player Ed Davis? Davis was a running back in the early to mid 90s. He was the heir apparent in his senior year as top running back, then had injuries and Tim Biakabutuka to deal with.
A plaque to Bob Ufer, Wolverine Track Star, was next to the entrance door to the press box. Not for Bob's athletic prowess(a world record holder in the 600 yard run), but for a Meechigan athlete nonetheless.
Wonder what has happened to the plaque with the demolition of the old press box.
the photo of Rod Smith gets me to wonder about he and Calvin McGee, it amaizes me that Barwis doesn't get hold of these guys and get them to take off some weight. Can't be a plus for recruiting when an assistant coach walks in the f ront door and he nearly can't get through that door. Both Smith and McGee are huge!
Tarpley was one of 5 commits in the same year, and he was a skinny kid who didn't get nearly the attention as the other recruits. Nearly an afterthought. Turned into one hell of a player. Here's hoping Horford does the same.
As in, who is teaching the defense how to tackle. The defense alignment won't matter much if they tackle like the last two(three?) years. The added weight of some players will help - I'm thinking of Roh in particular, who has great tackling form but got overwhelmed last year by larger players.
jmblue,
The point of my post was that the records for Michigan basketball from March 1992 through April 1993 reflect a team that forfeited every game. The appearances in the Final Four were memorable, but I don't see them as existing. The moniker of a great team goes to those who win championships. A team. I'll take the 1989 team over the Fab Five. They won based on team play.
Go back and watch the final minutes of the North Carolina final loss. Webber brings down the rebound, looks for someone to pass to, but the rest of the team is heading down the court. Leaving Chris Webber to bring the ball upcourt then was a poor decision. I remember screaming at the TV when they all ran up court. The Fab Five never quite played as a team, mostly as 5 great basketball players.
Those championship game appearances in 1992 and 1993 don't count. Like them (I do) or not, those teams were tainted by Webber and don't officially exist in the Meechigan record book. Webber destroyed the key to being a Michigan Man, and that's integrity. When reviewing the record of the Fab Five many years from now, the key will be they never won a single title in an early season tournament, Big Ten, NIT, or NCAA.
When I travel during football season, I call the Alumni Association, and ask for contact for local chapter where I am traveling. They might be watching the game, or know where Meechigan fans go to watch events.
*Desmond Howard couldn't hold AC's jock strap!
Brian,
The closest CCHA school to State College is OSU, at 330 miles over 5 1/2 hours from State College. For the CCHA teams in Michigan, minimum of 390 miles(A2). I hope that the Big Ten adds ND, then has a Big Ten Hockey championship. There would be 6 teams to start, and PSU would be the 7th.
Warren
When asked for his thoughts on the Sporting News ranking the Wolverines pre-season #1 in college football one year, Bo responded: "That's a baseball magazine, right?" We can all enjoy it as Rich and our team turn it around, and the bandwagon will fill up fast. The rest of us have already got our seats.
WOLVERINES!
Has to exclude Webber, since he is NOT listed in any all-time individual statistics in the record book.
Rickey Green - fast, and amazing on defense. Only here for 2 years, so he won't hold any individual records.
Glen Rice - the best shooter ever at Michigan, if not in the country.
Rudy Tomjanovich
Cazzie Russell - took the team to 2 NCAA finals, losing to UCLA one year.
Roy Tarpley

One of the best comments on Mgoblog in some time. I AGREE! I hate OSU because I can respect them. Hard to hate MooU when you pay them no attention.

RichRod's success and reputation was due to Steve Slaton and Pat White. Without them he never gets a look from Michigan, Arizona, or Alabama.
Asked for comment, early 80s, when Sporting News ranked Michigan preseason #1, Bo said: "they're a baseball magazine, yes?".
From these descriptions, we may be stronger at safety versus 2016. Corners will have to learn on the field. Lewis, Stribling and Peppers were monsters last year.
The 3 last-minute reversals I would want to see:
1. Hail Mary versus Colorado.
2. Blocked field goal against Notre Dame(1980?)
3. Losing to MSU-Kirk Gibson in 1978. Bo took the blame afterword, admitted he focused on Kirk rather than MSU that week.
At least for MooU they won't have to declare him ineligible for a bowl game!

Good race, though I too was waiting for rain to mess with things. Vettel has the field covered. If Red Bull's KERS becomes reliable, watch out.
