Gattis / Offensive strategy for THE GAME

Submitted by LakeWylieBlue on November 23rd, 2021 at 9:27 PM

Michigan needing to strategize outside the box so to speak isn't news to any of us here. Having said that, I am thinking we see 2 back sets with Edwards in there as well in the slot. Haskins, Crum and Edwards on the field at the same time gives osu something to think about. Control the clock is an obvious strategy and a defensive tactic the offense can deploy

Inserting JJ and running RPO's at certain times throughout the game would also prove to be a change of pace and be productive as JJ is elusive and has proven to be a playmaker

What are other options we can utilize this coming Saturday?

The Annexation Of Puerto Rico.  I don’t know but I hope or believe the man who is getting paid for a living “gattis” can do this better than me

Smart substitutions. Throwing the kitchen sink at them. Some Johnson and Andrel out wide with Sainristil and All. Throwing Wilson as a 2 in a trips package. Edwards in the slot. Split backs with Haskins and Edwards and some RPO counter pass to Edwards.

Can’t hold anything back. That means more “creative” than a simple Henning end around.

I think All and now Edwards have given them a lot to think about. If they try to cover with LBs - good luck. If they bring in extra DB - run Haskins. If they cover with a safety then receivers should have more space. Gotta throw the ball plenty and All and Edwards are nice weapons. So is AA and the other WRs have had moments. Hopefully Corum’s back and effective.

Running a jet sweep to Henning….the other way?

6 tight ends??

cade is actually two eight year olds in a trench coat????

The old hook and ladder on EVERY punt and kick return????? With actual ladders??????

chances are we see a couple new things but I don’t believe in the break out the whole new playbook thing. Run a couple counters to your counters you’ve been running to your base shit. Get your playmakers the ball in space. Mostly just execute! The plays are there, players just need to see them and execute them to be damn good.

UM's O-line will have to play better than it has in years.  It must play a flawless game.

A perfect O-line will allow Haskins and Corum (Corum will play, bet your house on it), to get at least a total of 200 yards on the ground.  UM will need at least 200 on the ground, otherwise OSU is gonna hang 50 on UM.  Dominate time of possession, letting Stroud and his 3 NFL WRs plenty of time to stay cold and watch from the side-lines.

Edwards wheel-route vs Maryland was one of UM's best plays of the year.  OSU will be hyper-vigilant for it every time Edwards is on the field.  UM can use OSU's hyper-vigilance to its advantage.  Swing Edwards out for a wheel-route, watch the entire OSU D concentrate on Edwards, then either have Haskins plow it up the middle on a delayed draw, or swing it right to Corum for a screen.  In fact, every time Edwards comes out of that backfield for a passing-down, use OSU's over-reaction to him with a perfect counter in the direction opposite of Edwards. I can see UM making plenty of yardage by using Edwards as a decoy.

3 rbs on the field at once is probably not a good strategy. You've got good receivers, use them.

I think people should really read the technical flyover from earlier on the main page. It argues persuasively that Michigan should use some clock to make the game finish in fewer possessions, and that the best way to attack them given their personnel is the running game.

So just based on Ian's analysis, Michigan should be running a fair amount.

I'm putting that out there because if Michigan hands off a lot, people are going to be upset, but it's quite possible that the best way to win with our personnel is to do that an succeed.

I agree with this.  I really don't think Michigan is going to stray far from what we have seen on offense all season long.  But in contrast to previous seasons, Michigan this season has shown the ability to adapt in-game.  If we are not making head way running the football, they will have Cade throw more.  And vice versa.  For the most part, the offense has built its success on finding weaknesses and punishing opposing teams.

I think we will be successful moving the ball against OSU.  I still worry about our red zone offense, especially in this game.  When we get inside the 20 we need to punch it in.  Every FG made is a net of -4 on the scoreboard.

I would like to see two things a lot. 1. Cade releasing on time and accurate  2.  Running backs used excessively in the short passing game.

One constant through all the shit of playing Ohio State the past several years was Chris Evans making them look foolish....and then us putting that back into the bag.  We have a small handful of tactics to make them look foolish all day long, and I hope the team deploys them early and often.

Oh yeah, and at least two Al Borges throwback screens.

JJ in the gun, hands off to Corum then continues on going through a zone read motion. Corum approaches the line of scrimmage then pitches flea-flicker back to Cade. Cade throws bomb to Edwards . Six.

Or maybe not.

Cade and JJ side by side, so can hike to either one, with Haskins, Corum, and Edwards all in as backs.  Try to decide what will happen there, OSU!  It's kind of like the wishbone, sort of a pentabone, or maybe a 2-headed tribone.  I'm not even asking for royalties on this new game-winning strategem.

M has to keep Ohio off the field and limit possessions.  Creative line play that creates a numbers advantage averaging over 4 yds per attempt and I will not need a viagra.

I am encouraged that I have also seen play calling this year that has the pass setting up the run. Safeties dropped in the box Cade has made defenses pay consistently taking acceptable chances with excellent risk/reward payouts.

Defense has to stop the big play. Frustrate the Ohio Freshman making him work underneath. 1 recipe Dr. Blitz is gone so we should be able to take the crossing routes away. Always keep 1 high to help on the deep ball.

M needs the refs to call a consistent and fair game. Hutchinson likely doubled so should free up timely masked blitzes and holding calls.

Many more tools in the offensive toolbox than most people expected. We've been waiting for that explosive offense for years, now we have one. I think we're going to light it up on Saturday.

Lots of work for the ends, Corum not dropping passes out of the backfield. Run the ball when it works, not to have a man ball pissing contest. Mainly misdirection and crossing routes, beating them at their own game. The offense has to be fast, out of character and flawless. No reason we can’t pound the ball down their throats, we just can’t come out determined to establish the run no matter what. Running straight ahead into loaded fronts just feeds into what OSU expects and wants us to do. Think Lloyd car vs Urban when Lloyd out of no dam where, beat Urban running a spread. For all the grief Lloyd caught, that was by far his greatest coaching performance.

Hell, Borges and Hoke put together an all time great game plan in the broken foot go for two game. Coming up short..,again. It’s time for Gattis and Harbaugh to do the same and get out of their comfort zones. I don’t think we can win playing Harbaugh ball. We have to be dynamic.

Yesterday I pulled up OSU against Minny, PSU, Nebraska, and today I'm watching a few more.  To me it really seems like when teams attacked 10-15 yards downfield between the hashes OSU defense was gashed more often than not.  I'm hoping for a healthy dose of All and Schoonmaker running seam routes, Sainristil, Henning and Wilson running overs and crossers, and Corum and Edwards on angle routes.

I noticed the same thing. Pull the defense down the field with 4 receiver sets and hitting the RB out of the backfield has the ability to be huge. Eventually OSU will pull the safeties up and then hope that Cade can hit a long shot to Anthony, CJ or Sanristil. I also expect to Donovan in the slot quite a bit. Hart said Edwards had fantastic hands and he wasn’t wrong. Extremely impressed with his routes on Saturday. You want speed in space, Donovan has it in spades.

We have many weapons but Cade may not have chunks of time in the pocket. We will need to mix up calls and pass more on 1st and 2nd down. The tight ends have been a problem for OSU this season so All and company will be key on big downs.

Get the ball out quick and don't give their pass rush time to get to Cade. He will need his A game.

I believe we have a smart QB who is a good student. He will make decisions quick enough and audible in a timely fashion. This may be the big difference between the QBs.

if coach Macs boys can confuse Stroud enough to delay him a second or two, while Cade gets his reads quick, we will have a game on our hands.

the thing that Cade has improved on is moving up in the pocket so he can take off and gain yards or pass.

in some situations him pulling and keeping is going to work, but don't think it is a multiple times a game thing.

definitely need to pick their spots.

Wait, not a single mention of our secret weapon Michael Barrett?  Surely, this must be intent to deceive, so continue to keep this on the down low.

Why just go all out and run a quadruple RPO option where JJ can hand off to Haskins up the gut, pitch it to Corum, keep it, or pass it to Edwards on a slot wheel route?

All of this offensive talk is cute. But, in the end, we are going to get ours and the true story of the game will be how do we keep them from getting theirs? It seems inevitable that this plays out like the MSU and PSU games, in that 4-5 key plays or mistakes will ultimately be the difference. Hopefully we learned some things in tight situations that OSU has not had to face lately and the football gods shine on us for a change. I can't wait to see it!

He kind of showed his hand with throwing to the RB. He's going to have to use a lot of speed in space to keep up with OSU scoring. Every time we get into the RZ, we need a TD.
