Game Day superstitions, let's hear 'em

Submitted by blowery on January 8th, 2024 at 12:49 PM

With the big day here, I'm sure a bunch of folks are neck deep in some ridiculous rituals to appease the football gods. What'cha got? What's worked this year? What's failed you in the past?

For me, I have a hoodie (shout-out Homefield) that I can wear before and after the game, but never during the game. Every time I put that thing on, bad things happen. Third quarter offense against Alabama? Hoodie was on. Last drive and OT, hoodie was off.

I'm sorry / you're welcome.

Depending on kickoff time (big noon) certain lamps in the room need to be on. No kids toys or anything else within 4 feet of my recliner and the tv so I can stand up during big moments when needed.

Never wear an ohio state shirt on game days or any day that ends in "y"

I'll breath in all things Michigan, and exhale the opponent.  Will often incorporate inhales with looking at the team and the M score graphic, and exhale looking at the opponent and their score graphic.  Sort of like not stepping on the red or blue lines on hockey ice.  My wife and kid will often call me out, at which time I try to ignore them to the point where they think I'm getting angry.  I don't, but it often helps clear out the room so I can watch in peace!

I probably have a lot more stuff in my head that I don't even think about...

Superstitions are so asinine.  What a silly, man-made concept of dramatic baloney.

On an unrelated note I don't wear Michigan gear anymore in GameDay or at least during the game.  And if I happen to be in an important stretch of games and haven't shaved, I continue the "playoff beard" until necessary. And so I've looked like an idiot now for a couple weeks as my facial hair game is...lacking/weak/semi-white trashy.

Never wear M gear. Usually watch all games in my Oregon State Beavers oversize hoodie. I have no affiliation with the Beavers other than a friend that lives in Oregon (she sent it to me after seeing it in a store - she gets a kick out of their mascot....).

As a non-alumnus, I haven’t worn, nor do I own, Michigan apparel. About a 1/3 of my non-office clothes are from my undergrad alma mater (Colorado State) and those are worn every Saturday throughout the year.

For Michigan game days, I usually watch in our living room laying down until the 3rd/4th Q when I’m pacing back and forth in front of the TV. My wife can watch with me if she wants but only if she refrains from saying negative/snarky things until the game is over. I mean, I do the same if Vanderpump Rules is on. I’ll take my dog for a short walk once or twice a game and pause the live feed so I can play catch up, thus controlling the action that has already taken place. I also avoid all sports content that could leak the score until after.

I usually drink 1 beer per quarter, unless it’s a blowout, and I try to time my consumption along with the amount of time left in the game. For victories, I usually scour the web for schadenfreude and highlights with a special BBA beer to celebrate. For losses, it’s MGoBlog only and 2 Advil PM so I can fall asleep faster. We’re doing Dry January, so a blowout would be quite appreciated but I wouldn’t expect it.

I'm afraid to read this thread because i could pick up new superstitions that I never thought of but I watched the Rose Bowl with my mother and I bought her a new TV because I thought hers was bad luck.  It was also too small.

I'll be wearing the same 20 year old M hoodie I've worn for every game since PSU this year (and haven't washed). I'll get it from the only place it is stored between games.

I've been itching to shave my beard for a while but realized just before Bama that this beard hasn't lost a game this year. There are hairs on my face that are 14-0. No way I could shave then, and when we win, it will be a 15-0 Natty Winning Beard. So I guess I'm never shaving again.

Hail!

I have two pairs of red boxers. I've worn them each of the last three iterations of The Game (because red only belongs down there). I'm wearing them again today in hopes that they continue carrying the same powers they do against OSU.

I have not watched a UM FG or EP live since Phil Brabbs missed a pair in the 2002 Washington game.

We missed 3 fgs early in the game and I stopped watching kicks and then Brabbs made the game winner with me having my eyes closed.

Ever since, I've closed my eyes or looked away for every kick the past 20+ years

Will be wearing the sames clothes, sitting in the same spot, with the same lights on as last Monday. I gotta say, I'm a little anxious that the team is wearing the blue pants tonight.

Didn't have any until last week's Rose Bowl game.  Hat forwards on offense, hat backwards on defense.  Worked out well enough for Bama so will be instituting this practice for tonight's game as well.

I normally don’t watch big games. I loosely keep track of what’s going on through the live blog, although sometimes the tenor is so negative, you’d think we were down 4 touchdowns and in reality, we’re up by a field goal. I hate looking at the score during the game. I hate that moment right before I check it, that sense of dread. We’re on vacation now and in a hotel room so I don’t know what I’m going to do. My husband is definitely watching.

Room leaving at crucial times to propel better Karma. Thank god for replay and Youtube.

Have learned I should not drink alcohol during meaningful contested games. Too nervous and ref bias sensitive (they trigger me) to be helped by loosening my inhibitions.

Well, I may out myself here to other posters (because based on this superstition I have, some will know who I am...)

I turned down multiple ticket offers to attend the game because Michigan athletics have lost the last 11 sporting events I have gone to (including the Natty game against Louisville) so for that reason alone, I couldn't bring myself to buy tickets and go...  My fellow alumni friends would have never let me hear the end of it...

Have the shirt I've worn for every game this season. Is it a Michigan shirt?? No, it is not. It's a Hartland Eagles shirt. We live in Hartland and for those who don't know, our school mimics UofM. Maize and blue colors, Winged Helmets, and Victors as our fight song. To begin the season I didn't have a Michigan t-shirt that was maize/yellow, so I wore this t-shirt as a stand-in since the colors were the same. Have now worn it for every game so of course it is on today. I also have my season hat that I purchase before every season that I will wear, but I have to wear it backward during the game. Tried wearing it forward after halftime last week and well, we know how that went. Flipped to backward for the final drive and OT. Also, I have my hoodie that I wear before the game but not during. Found that out against OSU.

I wake up and put on the same block M t-shirt that I've worn since the 2021 season and put out my Michigan flag before doing anything else. After showering I switch to a Jumpman Dri Fit. For The Game I wear my Woodson jersey that I've fought like hell for the last 10 years to still fit into. Tonight I will wear that same jersey.

The Victors may only be listened to an odd number of times (total for the day) and at least once before getting out of bed to start the day (covered so far).

Otherwise just trying to recreate some Bama juju by wearing the same clothes (changing the tee-shirt sometime in the second half from a 2010 pregame tee shirt to an M Rec Sports shirt—can’t emphasize that enough) and sitting in the same spot. Since you’re wondering—yes, same specific pair of underwear.

Game day rule number one: no red.

Unless it is in the shape of a rose.

At the Rose Bowl I wore my ancient blue t-shirt with maize "MICHIGAN" and my ancient hand-me-down blue Michigan sweatshirt with maize "MICHIGAN". And my beat to hell thin-M hat. And khakis.

You may not be aware of this...but Michigan won that game 27-20. In overtime.

Tonight it will be blue pants with the ancient and beloved sweatshirt. Big game blues. The hat. My maize and blue Michigan pseudo-Cons. This will ensure victory.

Team 144 is going to do it.

LET'S GO BLUE.

I've been nervous for this game since last Tuesday. I've lost my appetite. I feel sick to my stomach. I can barely even read anything on this board anymore. Why do I do this to myself? I hate sports.
