Four Questions For You - Deep Psychoanalysis

Submitted by XM - Mt 1822 on February 28th, 2024 at 9:29 PM

Mates,

OT season is basically here.  Hockey is okay, kinda, we'll see this weekend.  Basketball is to disappointment as a galactic black hole is to the concept of a 'vacuum'.   Thus it is time for the next in the series of very serious, very scientific questions that you need to answer in order that we continue with our psychological profiling of U of M fans.   Data will be collated, analyzed, deduced, reduced, put in a centrifuge and spun up to see what results we get.  The questions are as follows:

1.  What is your favorite James Bond movie?

2.  Who (or what) is your favorite Super Hero?  You are not restricted by era or medium - can be as old as the original Superman, can be as new as any of the Marvel/DC heroes or anything else.  If not a well-known one, post a picture and description.

3.  Related to question 2, above, who (or what) is your favorite villain?

4.  True or False:  The hokey-pokey is what its all about.   For extra credit, explain your answer

1. I’m partial to Brosnan, simply because those were the first I saw and coincided with the fantastic video game.

2. Batman. A mortal with money, who lives his life with reckless abandon. What’s not to love. I really enjoyed the Christian Bale series, but the newest with Pattinson was even better.

3. Thanos. Seemingly unbeatable, and with an endgame (pun intended)  that sadly isn’t that unbelievable.

4. The Hokey Pokey is what it’s all about, until everyone Cha Cha slides.

3. Rocky Balboa is my favorite villain.

I subscribe to the alternative Rocky IV theory. Ivan Drago intended to use his exhibition bout with Apollo to defect to the US. He hated the Soviet system and wanted freedom. When he accidentally killed his idol, he couldn't defect. The US citizenry would kill him. Not only was he forced to return to the USSR, he was then forced to fight Rocky on Xmas Eve, all while still grieving from killing his idol. The best boxer in the world can't reasonably overcome all those tragedies. Consider this: why does he yell, "I fight for me! For me!"? Would a communist say that? Of course not. That is something a freedom loving capitalist would say. Also consider: Rocky didn't throw in the towel, and he abandoned his wife and kid on Xmas for a payday. Those are villain traits.

1. Goldfinger. Fun movie with Pussy Galore. Skyfall is a close 2nd.

2. Deadpool. The talking one.

3. Dr. Evil. Most quotable villain ever.

4. False. The Hokey Pokey conjures images of Iowa football, which is never true.

5. We are F-ing national champions. Implied bonus question.

From Russia with Love because Connery and  Casino Royale the Craig version because Craig

Batman.  Not a superhero fan but the show was campy, the The Dark Night is a fantastic movie, and he is complicated

Thanos is a great villain.  The best villains think they are good.  I might say Joker if I saw either of the recent movies.

What?   Sounds NSFW.

1.  Goldfinger.

2.  Count von Count.  He's a vampire that can summon lightning bolts from the sky just by yelling "ONE TWO THREE AH AH AH"!!!  That's crazy powerful!  Based on that, I'm counting him as a "Super Hero."

3.  Scar from Lion King.

4.  No.  Being a leader, always doing the "right thing" and taking care (there are many different ways to define "taking care") of those you like and love.  That's what it's all about, that's what we're here for.

1.  Goldfinger, although the opening sequence from The Spy Who Loved me is excellent, and the parkour sequence from Casino Royale is one of my favorites.

2.  The Iron Giant ("Super-man!"), or Samaritan.

3.  Ozymandius.  "I did it twenty-five minutes ago."  Possibly Infidel.  "Am I the eagle, or the mountain?"

4.  False.  Team 144 - Business is Finished!

1.  Huge Bond fan here as well.  From Russia With Love is the best classic movie, and Casino Royale is the best modern one.  That said, there are many aspects of the 60s-70s movies that you can’t really do today and with good reason - most notably, scenes from Russia and Golden Gun where Bond slaps the love interest while interrogating her.

2. I’ll have to think about that.

3. Favorite villain? How in the ever loving hell am I the first person here to pick the obvious choice of Michael Barrett???

1) Casino Royale-Daniel Craig version.

2) Iron Man-RDJ

3) Joker-Heath Ledger.

4) False-I don’t dance or act. All my moves are sports related.

1.  What is your favorite James Bond movie?

Goldfinger - If for the theme song if not for anything else

2.  Who (or what) is your favorite Super Hero?  You are not restricted by era or medium - can be as old as the original Superman, can be as new as any of the Marvel/DC heroes or anything else.  If not a well-known one, post a picture and description.

Batman - the Adam West version

3.  Related to question 2, above, who (or what) is your favorite villain?

Catwoman - Julie Newmar although I like Eartha Kitt and Lee Ann Merriweather too

4.  True or False:  The hokey-pokey is what its all about.   For extra credit, explain your answer

It is not what it is all about - you need to turn yourself around

1. Love them all, mostly, but Live and Let Die was always a fav because of Jane Seymour.

2. Spawn (though he could easily be #3 as well).

3. Darth Sidious.

4. Never heard of it.

1) From Russia With Love

2) Superman

3) Darth Vader (But only if you think of Darth while also thinking of the John Williams soundtrack, “The Imperial March”.)

4) I always felt the Hokey Pokey was a restating of the Kierkegaard thesis that life can only be understood backwards but it must be lived forwards. Also, Ryan Day does indeed suck.

2. GI Joe (the original Hasboro one, GO ARMY, beat navy)

3. bad guy? how do you have a favorite bad guy?   Chael Sonnen I guess, the American Gangster

4. The hokey-pokey is for people who can't do the Polka.

1. I’m a big Bond fan - and feel Connery and Craig are the best Bonds.  Which are the best movies - impossible to rank.  I like what Connery established - his “cool”, and the grit of Craig.  Casino Royale (Craig) and Skyfall are especially good.   The villain, IMO, really makes the film.

2. If Wolverine is a Super Hero, he’s my vote.  If not, Iron Man.

3. Heath Ledger as the Joker.

4.  Hokey Pokey ... like Proud Mary - is a throwback to weddings in a bygone time.

Not a single On Her Majesties Secret Service? Not one?

I thought Craig was dour and joyless and No Time to Die is my least favorite Bond film of the series. Give me Lazenby over Daniel "I never seemed to like the character or the job" Craig any day

1. I have bad taste in movies so Goldeneye. Though Casino Royale was great. Best Bond actor is Sean Connery so From Russia with Love is awesome

2. Incredible Hulk. I love the dichotomy of “he’s a hero, but if he gets mad enough he might destroy the entire city.”

3. Doctor Doom.

4. False. Family and friends is what it’s all about. No one is on their death bed wishing they made more money or worked harder for their boss. They’re wishing they didn’t lose those connections, spent more time with their kids, and had more time to say “I love you.”

1. The Living Daylights (great song too). Goldfinger right behind, From Russia w Love is probably the best one, I have several close honorable mentions as well.

2. Batman

3. Nicholson's Joker.

4. No response, don't know enough to answer.

1) Goldeneye. I'm a child of the 90s and I grew up with Brosnan as my James Bond. I must've rented that movies from Blockbuster 50 times. Some all time classic lines in that movie.

"I AM INVINCIBLE!!"

"For England, James? No....for me."

2) The Punisher. He does what's necessary vs. trying to do what's right, because I love Jon Bernthal, and because The Punisher movie with Thomas Jane was filmed in Tampa, where I grew up.

No superpowers. Just an endless supply of weaponry and an indomitable will to wipe criminal scum from the face of the earth in the most brutal, deserving ways possible. He's almost like a "good version" of the Joker. All it took was one bad day to make Frank Castle who he is, and he's not a good person, but he's only out to target "the bad people."

3) Quite a few options. Darth Vader is probably the best overall villain, but at the same time he's also possibly the most tragic, because his entire life amounted to pain, suffering, and being manipulated. He wasn't evil for the sake of being evil the way Sidious was. Vader often thought that what he was doing was right, and the best villains are oftentimes the ones who think they are good. They are the heroes of their own story. He also knew how far he'd fallen, but up until the very end, believed he was beyond saving.

Best Villains who are evil just for the sake of being evil? Sidious and Ramsay Bolton, although Ramsay scares me more. Somehow being drowned and dying via force lightning sounds infinitely better than whatever torture Ramsay could concoct for me.

Homelander is downright evil too, and if we're being honest, a much more accurate representation of what someone with Superman-esque powers would truly be like. But he's got depth, because he wasn't evil his whole life. You can tell there are moments where all he needed was just a family that loved him and he could've turned out much differently. Doesn't excuse his actions, but you can come to understand, based on his upbringing and the level of emotional neglect and abuse he suffered, that its no wonder he turned out the way he did.

4) Don't care enough about the question to answer it.

1. Casino Royale, although it's hard to pick because the eras are so different from each other. I have a soft spot for Goldeneye and even The World is Not Enough, with its immortal closing line.

2. Unconventional definition of superhero but I like El, the heroine of the Scholomance trilogy by Naomi Novik. She's an angry, lonely, incredibly overpowered teenager who learns, together with her peers, that magic only works well and sustainably when you use it collaboratively and without stealing from the weak.

3. Batman.

4. False because incomplete. Hokey pokey and turning yourself about are what it's all about.

1. Casino Royale. I remember thinking that it was going to be tough to replace Bronson, but what a job. The action was great.  M and Bond had great chemistry. Just a great introduction to a new bond.

2. Spiderman: He is a fan favorite for a reason.  He has amazing villains to go against. Most have personal issues and good back stories.  Spiderman has cool super powers, but I love how being a hero hurts his personal life, and he has so many issues.  The spider verse is done super well and allows new unique spiderman stories. (Flash and Gambit as a kid were also awesome).

2b. Casey Jones (TMNT): I was a huge TMNT fan as a kid, and still think they are great. I love looking at Casey Jones though as a Vigilante. He has no powers, no training, just a hockey player fighting crime with a golf bag full of sports equipment. Can't get more badass than that.

3. Doc Oc: Joker is a classic.  I love his chaotic nature as a villain, and was probably done as good as any in Dark Knight, but Doc Oc is great.  Super powerful with his arms. But nerdy and a scientist, so a smart villain.

4. False. No!

1. Dr No. It's almost campy now, but iconic, and Ursula Andress is still the best Bond girl. Skyfall if you require new things.

2. Mike Eruzione, from Winthrop, Massachusetts. He plays for the United States of America.

3. Max Cady from Cape Fear.

4. The hokey pokey might as well be what it's all about. Everything else is ultimately just as stupid and less fun. As Chuckles the Clown once said,"A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down the pants. That's life."

1. Moonraker. Many memories of Jaws from my childhood.

2. I've always been a Superman guy.

3. Going off the beaten path here into anime: Meruem from Hunter x Hunter. His character development is excellent. If anime doesn't count, then the Joker.

4. False.

1) Man with a Golden Gun. Scenes were filmed in Phuket Thailand. I have been to that island and it is gorgeous, although a bit touristy. Overall Sean is/was the best.

2) Wonder Woman because of her wonderful assets

3) The Joker

4) Absolutely true. It drives humanity, and it is fun.

2. Gambit from X-Men (specifically the cartoon/comic eras). Dude was an unapologetic agent of chaos.

3. Kerrigan from the Star Craft universe.

4. False. 42.

1.  What is your favorite James Bond movie? Skyfall. Recency bias and all, but Daniel Craig is the second best Bond (if you have to ask who's first, you're already losing), it's tougher to choose from all the Connery films. Goldfinger is likely runner up.

2.  Who (or what) is your favorite Super Hero? Ironman. I was never much of a comic book guy, so I base this solely on the Marvel movies and the superb performance by Robert Downey Jr. He elevates the role to a real character and not just a cartoon.

3.  Related to question 2, above, who (or what) is your favorite villain? Stanley Kowalski. I tried to think of reprehensible characters who you somehow find yourself rooting for. Marlon Brando's portrayal was so intense and magnetic that you find yourself drawn to him despite his brutish ways.

4.  True or False:  True. Since my philosophy has evolved to where I see that the world is but a flash of light against the backdrop of eternity, you may as well stop worrying, get living, and otherwise turn yourself about.

1. Goldfinger  Saw it during its initial release at the theater when I was 12. My parents would never in a million years have taken me to see it, but the movie was part of the birthday party of my best friend at the time, and his mom took us all to see it. I don't know if she was aware that it had some fairly adult content (for 1965 at least).

Aside from the fact that all the gadgets and plot devices were absolutely awesome to a 12 year old, what made the movie particularly memorable for me was that watching Honor Blackman roll around in the hay jump-started puberty for me. I went into the movie theater a typically naive little boy and came out of the theater a lustful, horny teenager.

2. Never gave a shit about superheroes when I was a kid—I thought they were dumb. I started reading my dad's SF collection when I was 10 (I was a precocious reader for my age) so I was oriented towards fiction that had at least a nodding acquaintance with scientific reality. I knew that it was ridiculous that Superman could fly through the air without an obvious means of propulsion.

I also thought wrestling was dumb and fake, so I was definitely considered odd by most of my friends.

I did love Rocky and Bullwinkle, though.

3. Boris and Natasha.

Goldeneye, but mostly because of the N64 game of the same name.

If by favorite superhero you mean which superhero would I like to be, then it is easily Doctor Strange.  The sling ring teleportation alone would make it worth it.  If you mean fan, it is a toss up between Wolverine and Spiderman.

My favorite villains are the ones who consider themselves the good guy, or their means are justified by the ends.  With that in mind, I think Kingpin is great.

The hokey-pokey is not what it is all about.  There are too many great things in life to consider putting things in and out to be the most important things in life.
