I don’t think Hart would get the job, but his status as a legendary player and fan favorite would get him involved in the conversation and interview process.

Ultimately, I think (all based on Harbaugh leaving) they give the job to Moore and Hart gets promoted to OC/RBs coach. Newsome moves to OL and we go hire a TE coach. Wouldn’t rule out Kirk Campbell getting some sort of OC role as well (PGC or co-OC) with his prior OC experience.

I kinda agree with this assessment.  One thing in Hart's favor, in line with your thought, is that he gets a longer leash to get 'his' program going.  Because he is legit UM Royalty, on the same level as Harbaugh, where anyone else is not.

Nobody but Harbaugh survives 2020.  That's what Royalty gets you...

Jonathan Smith has done an impressive job rebuilding Oregon State, but he's never coached or played east of the Mississippi. He has no recruiting ties in the Midwest. That makes him a gamble.

Jedd Fisch would be a good get, but defense is a question mark with him. Teams don't play much defense in the Pac-12, so he would need to bring on a top shelf defensive coordinator.

Jason Candle is who they would hire of everyone else said no. He's had a few good seasons at Toledo but nothing on his resume really jumps off the page. The only factor in his favor is that he probably has the deepest B1G recruiting ties of anyone else on the list.

Mike Elko would be a coup, but there's no way he picks MSU over TAMU.

I really hate Jedd for MSU, but the more I think about it, maybe it would cool their jets a bit having someone coaching who’s been on our staff before and has no ill will towards us. Maybe culture-wise, Jedd is exactly what they need right now. Someone that Harbaugh can shake hands with after the game and have a conversation with and respect mutually. I would hate for MSU to get better on the field, but I wouldn’t mind them getting better off it.

I see now it's good to have friends coaching in the conference...then you can March to the commissioners door with pitchforks...I hope Jedd gets the job, he's a good and respectful friend of UM.

These are 4 names I sort of expected, so not a surprise.  Smith would be a big signing for them given what he's done at Oregon St., but him and Elko could be options at better jobs as well.  Elko might also just like Duke for now since there will be better openings in the future and he's probably going to keep chugging along with decent teams for a while. I still think Candle is the most likely guy because he's local but we'll see.

The only coach should want to leave is the Toledo coach because its a step up in conference. Oregon State coach only makes sense if the money is that much better but I don't think MSU is a better job than Oregon State.

I just saw a similar article yesterday. They listed four.... John L, Bobby, Mel, and Waters. Not sure if it was the same you saw. Also, how ridiculous is it that three of those four men coached in the 25 years aince I entered that school? And smack dab in the middle is their Dantonio period of success/failure/success/failure. What a rollercoaster.

Elko won’t leave the south

Smith plays the part and Candle can bridge Ohio recruiting. Funny how reality hit and all those MSU fans thought they suddenly had $11-12m to offer are realizing “oh those were pledges and we may need to settle with the other coach.”

welcome back to $5-7m territory
