Florida Senator Rick Scott writes to Boo Carrigan

Submitted by WestPalmBlue on December 4th, 2023 at 3:22 PM

Senator Scott has written a three page request to chairman of CFP on Senate Letterhead.  Available on 'x' and he is asking for transparancy and a response to 10 items in addition to the answer as to how FSU was ranked 4 when it was known Jordan Travis was out for Flordida and nothing has changed since that time.  He is asking for each commmittee members vote, hte topics of discussions, emails or texts between them, emails and texts between the committee and ESPN, and emails and texts between the committee and the SEC.  He acknowledged its too late but still demanding transparency and justification for the loss of revenue that FSU will be subject to.

Did he ask how FSU was ranked ahead of Georgia given everything Boo said yesterday went into their decision?

Because that is more infuriating to me than simply leaving FSU out.

The biggest inconsistency is clearly that they had FSU ranked ahead of both UT and UA through week 13 - even with Jordan Travis injured - and decided to switch course after championship weekend. FSU's QB2 would clearly have been back for the CFP, but they just used that as an excuse to pull in the SEC.

And if they're going to bring in Alabama, they can't have them ranked ahead of TX which beat them, so they just decided to bring in both.

Basically, their undefeated record mattered until it didn't.

I think it can be justified by saying that Alabama had not beat the #1 ranked two time defending national champion Georgia as of that ranking.  Once they did, that bolsters Bama's resume a great deal, and by extension, Texas.

One obvious sticking point is Florida State going 2-0 against the SEC, one of the games happening after the injury.

All that said, I guess I don't feel the same way about this because I went to bed Saturday expecting Bama to get into the Playoff, cuz Bama.  I agree it is probably unfair, but at least to me was 100% expected.  They have won like 46 national championships in the last 15 years, so if it you v. Bama and it is close you are probably getting the boot.

Not according to the AP.   In the AP Poll, FSU is ranked fourth - while Bama is ranked fifth.  In the Coaches poll, FSU is ranked third - while Texas and Bama are tied for fifth.

And, the letter is on Senate letterhead.  Hmmm... I'm sure that Tommy Tuberville is going to chime in and insist the Bama decision was appropriate.

The only "poll" that has FSU behind Bama is the CFP's Selection Committee.   And, in fact, the CFP Selection Committee had FSU in front of Bama and Texas as recently as... ummm, last week - their prior ranking release.   The only thing FSU did since that prior poll is win the ACC CCG.

I will say, after I heard (wasn’t watching) Alabama beat Georgia, I threw $25 on Alabama to win the natty….they were at +500 and something…,I just knew they were going to get in….so I don’t think it took any inside gambling info getting out for people to jump on that….I mean hell, msnbc this morning did a bit on college football, even advertised it by saying Florida St is mad, find out why next….only to interview finebaum and have him and the host declare Alabama deserves to be there more than anyone….

It’s all ridiculous….and all solved if UM kicks their ass!!

(Thats my biased recap of the show this morning, so don’t quote me, but I’m not far off….)

Better still, the NCAA should have some fun with it. They could tell Scott that FSU out / Bama in was payoff to Tommy Tuberville in order to get Tubie to stop screwing around with Pentagon promotions.

If he bought it, it would be a real "get the popcorn" moment on the Senate floor.

If we're looking to stem unfairness in college football, there will be a lot of layers of this onion to unpeel. But--and this will be the first time that I agreed with Senator Scott on anything--I welcome this request. Would be VERY interesting to have insight about the twists and turns of committee thinking, and lobbying, as Vegas was posting bets. . .

Gotta say one more thing that I think is important, though, and that is that one of the biggest lessons here is being overlooked: Jordan Travis and all of these kids should be getting paid. Hundreds of millions of dollars in the balance, and the performers work for free? Would love to see Jim make some noise about this.

The CFP committee may have unknowingly set the market price for what a QB is worth. They basically said Jordan Travis is worth the lost payout of being in the playoff. Since the CFP is only sanctioned by the NCAA, and not actually run by the NCAA, this would give Harbaugh an interesting new talking point in his efforts to get players paid.

Brian’s idea from the podcast was notable: just have a play-in game between Alabama and FSU.  Whoever refuses to play would be ineligible for the fourth spot; it goes to whoever wins the game.
