Florida Rep Proposes Changes to State NIL Law After Losing Recruit to HBCU

Under the table bags of money have become over the table bags of money. Sadly, many kids are going to sell out to the highest bidders.

Just like the coaches!
December 15th, 2021 at 8:57 PM ^
Some of the coaches. Others (Ferenz, Fitz) stay where they are happy. And yet another (duh!) donates incentive money to less fortunate fellow employees.
December 15th, 2021 at 9:41 PM ^
Ferentz has been extremely well compensated and I don’t think many teams are banging down the door for either him or Fitz. I agree that they are fits who would be silly to risk their careers over a couple million though
December 16th, 2021 at 1:49 AM ^
idk. it's quite possible he turned down the michigan job prior to the hiring of rich rod then hoke.
December 16th, 2021 at 4:44 AM ^
The only coach 〽️ has ever offered more money than they could possibly turn down is Jim Harbaugh. I don't think anyone has offered either of those coaches enough money to actually think about leaving their current positions.
December 16th, 2021 at 8:23 AM ^
I expect it's a lot easier to not follow highest bidder when you've made millions and you are set for life with plenty of money for multiple homes, versus a teenager who's never had enough money to buy a car.
December 15th, 2021 at 9:05 PM ^
I don’t think it’s sad at all. It was sadder to keep these adults from profiting just from who they are. There has been an obscene amount of money made, and endorsements don’t hurt anyone.

I'll say it and I'll name it. How dare these black kids go to a historically black school (after being committed to a PWI - predominantly white institution)...where, a high profile black coach swooped in at the last second, and where in theory, this black student-athlete has learned that he can earn the most money from his name, his image, or his likeness.
(And hey, "that guy" who read that and bristled, I'll save you the time and your thumbs from typing..."why does it always have to be about race?!!!" *insert more outrage* ...because more often than not, it is, or it is at least a factor. And no, I will not "give (you) a break." Just close your eyes and pretend he went to Georgia, this would be a nonstory outside of the college football recruiting world and you'll feeeel better.)
December 16th, 2021 at 3:56 AM ^
Exactly this!!
plus I doubt that Jackson St could come up with more money than everyone else if all he wanted was to go to the highest bidder.
December 16th, 2021 at 4:45 AM ^
I don't know about that. UA has some pretty deep pockets and I bet they might have something to do with it.
December 15th, 2021 at 11:04 PM ^
Never gets old.
December 16th, 2021 at 8:03 AM ^
Sadly for who? The schools that pay millions to coaches and give the athlete only a scholarship?
December 15th, 2021 at 8:45 PM ^
Interesting but this Twitter guy is drawing misleading conclusions. Rep says he's been working on the bill for six months, Twitter user frames the story to make it look like the bill is a response to FSU losing the recruit.
In any case better NIL freedoms for student athletes is a good thing, even if some of the people pushing for it are doing so for less than altruistic reasons.
December 15th, 2021 at 8:55 PM ^
He was probably waiting to introduce the bill at a time when it would get news coverage, and signing day with the FSU decommit was perfect timing.
And agree that NIL is good for the athletes, but ideally there should be uniform, nationwide rules that aren't derived from state legislation. Sports and politics rarely mix well.
December 15th, 2021 at 9:12 PM ^
Wait people say misleading and non fact based things on social media? I’m shocked. Does someone have pearls I may be able to borrow I’m looking for something to clutch.

Don’t need to tell me his party affiliation.

Being from Florida, it’s probably the “Party In The Back” party.
December 15th, 2021 at 9:05 PM ^
Florida....what a bunch of losers. They have Ron DeathSantis as governor and now this idiot?
December 15th, 2021 at 9:34 PM ^
Look at you being all informed.
December 15th, 2021 at 11:15 PM ^
Florida, what a bunch of losers!
When the objective data says this 'loser' state is where EVERYBODY is moving to, primarily LA and NY trash.
You're welcome. Now ask yourself why they want to be in DeSantis' state.
December 15th, 2021 at 11:29 PM ^
Probably for the beautiful mountain views.
December 15th, 2021 at 11:54 PM ^
Because they cant afford California
December 16th, 2021 at 1:41 AM ^
Not many can afford California.
Taxes and cost of living.

Such a clever nickname. Did you pick that up from Reddit?

This is now the new norm.
With that, very good investigative reporting HH91.

Eh….no politics?
December 16th, 2021 at 8:21 AM ^
Generally enforced more in one direction than the other.

NCAA needs to mandate consistent NIL rules. The inconsistency among states and schools cannot continue for college sports to remain healthy and a remotely level playing field
December 16th, 2021 at 8:36 AM ^
This is the problem. The consensus opinion amongst coaches seems to be that it’s the Wild West out there. That’s going to lead to even more confusion and instability. Pro leagues like the NFL have internal rules and regulations, but as many warned, the NCAA screwed up by resisting the inevitable for so long. Now they are rightfully viewed as impotent and a joke, and so there’s no internal governing body to give order to the system. Regulation at the state level isn’t going to work, and I highly doubt the Feds will get involved. So for now it’s just chaos.
December 15th, 2021 at 11:31 PM ^
That dude looks like the bad guy right out of a movie script. Meaning of course he got the majority vote in Florida. This is what we are focused on?
December 16th, 2021 at 12:05 AM ^
So FSU got screwed out of a recruit because of NIL. You guys lost a recruit to Texas today (probably because of NIL. He isn’t walking into a good situation there). We’ve lost two players now to NIL at Texas, while there are probably a couple more that I’m not privy to. I know some of you will say “Oh look at the OSU fan mad about getting screwed by players taking money somewhere else. Pot meet kettle.” Texas, UGA and most of all A&M are killing it in the NIL game and USC is next. Is it time for the donors of our respective schools to start making funds for players like Texas and A&M are doing? We have some of the most lucrative and successful alumni bases in the country and it seems as if we’re getting left in the dust. I for one thought that NIL would really benefit you guys with some of your alumni and donors. It just looks like if we want to play with the big boys, we’re gonna have to spend like the big boys. I don’t like it. I think it’s ruining CFB, but I think some players should be compensated for their NIL. Just asking what you guys think our respective schools should do so we don’t get left behind because it doesn’t look like anyone will be able to build a championship caliber team the old fashioned way anymore.
December 16th, 2021 at 1:48 AM ^
NIL may not foster a great team culture. Players who use NIL money as a determining factor in their recruitment are more likely focused on ME Instead of TEAM.
Let them go elsewhere. Look at OSU getting hosed by Quinn Ewers. Class act.
December 16th, 2021 at 2:00 AM ^
Yeah something tells me that it had nothing to do with OSU NIL, but national NLI with big agencies and getting money a year earlier. Day has said a few times over the past couple months that he wants “guys who want to be Buckeyes,” that’s great and all… but I’m just not sure OSU and UM can compete for championships at the end of the season with those guys. I want all of our players to be like this, but at a certain point, if the SEC is doing it, we’ll have to start doing it in the end.
December 16th, 2021 at 8:30 AM ^
Peaceful Buck:
The solution? open the market; pay the players.
December 16th, 2021 at 8:51 AM ^
Love it let’s now get politics involved in college sports. Like money isn’t destroying it enough
