First day of Pads....

Submitted by umbig11 on

LT - JBB; LG - Bredeson; C -Ruiz; RG - Onwenu; RT - Runyan

QB1 - Patterson; QB2 - even; QB4 - Milton

It is very early. That line can change very quickly now that the pads are on. Let the Patterson hype begin.

Wait, I thought Patterson wasn't allowed to practice, which is why not knowing his eligibility was an issue. Can he play in the spring game either way?

Seconding Mantis here on JBB. If JBB can cut it at LT he is probably the top tackle on the roster, with Runyan currently running second. I'm hoping to hear some noise about Hudson soon; if Hudson is blowing up, he'll probably slot in at RT.

The small bit of question about Ruiz--is he ready to make the calls at center?--seems to be on its way to being answered. They think so. Our interior can be great this season. If they stay healthy and we can plug in decent guys outside, it's a huuuuuge step forward for the team.

Really interested to see how McCaffery battles Peters, too.

I think having (hopefuly) Patterson could help Ruiz, since he has the most experience out of our QBs. Speight was very good at reading schemes and making calls; Peters + Kugler...not so much.

I think I like a Ruiz/Patterson combo making reads and adjustments. We can't be predictable again. We need to have somebody keep D's on their toes so they can't correctly guess every play we're going to run. And I think Patterson could go a long way in making this happen.

It is my opinion that the success or failure of the offense will ultimately come down to our tackle play. That is such a pivotal position. I was surprised to see JBB and Runyon as the two initial front-runners. I am not particularly pleased or displeased with this information, but just on the edge of my seat to see how this unfolds. Any updates from anyone on Newsome? These are the kind of morsels that whet the football appetite.

JBB has been on campus for 4 years. Can he improve? Sure. But last year he was an average B10 tackle on his best days, to think he could anchor a championship caliber line at LT one year later would be a pretty large improvement.

They thought he was good enough to try there 2 years ago. He was ok at RT last season. He seems to take all of the blame for the unit's screw ups. Ulizio and Runyan were worse at pass pro and the guards made their share of mistakes. That said, I'm hoping one of the unknowns steps up, claims LT and lets JBB stay at RT.

The guards were a huge pass pro liability. The worst breakdowns were on the interior against stunts, all year long. They're young. We know they can massively improve. The tackles will look better almost by default.

the whiff on the stunts was a RT issue mostly all last season, compounded by shit RB pick-ups. If JBB is our best option at LT that gives me huge concerns. Can't one of those highly ranked red-shirt frosh step up to kick ass? JBB is OK ar RT, but at LT he doesn't seem fast enough to handle the edge. And at RT last year he struggled with the stunt. His bad put two QBs in the hospital. Edit - the Speight hit at Purdue was Ulizio's bad - too late on a twist to his gap. His DE dropped back in coverage and Ulizio took the bait. Also, Isaac whiffed on his blitz assignment. There in a nutshell was our pass pro breakdowns in 2017. RT couldn't pick up stunts / twists and RBs were just awful recognizing and taking on the blitzing LB. Teams just loaded that gun on us all year long. Warriner and Jay need to fix that in 2018.

I wonder how much of this was confusion due to the plays and line calls.  Based on some interviews with Warinner it sounds like his main focus is simplifying everything and teaching terminology.  Makes me believe that maybe last year there was a lot of confusion among the OL.

Every time I see a thread started by umbig11 I get excited because I know he brings the gold as far as Michigan football news goes. Starting to get the feeling that this is going to be a great year, don't know why after last season but I feel so optimistic about our 2018 campaign.

Read he was contemplating a leave of absence from the program? Hope everything is OK, must be a Mom thing because Dad said it is his choice to stay or go back to FLA.

Ed Warinner, whoever the starting 5 are.

The line should look more sane than last year. Offensive line consistency is what I want, for goodness sake.
