You may be right, but this is the first time that we've had a dedicated OC without split duties. Gattis was going to be the OC at Maryland and I doubt he comes to Michigan if there weren't some expectation of autonomy, especially given that coming in and running Harbaugh's offense isn't going to get him anywhere.

The other part of this change is the expectation that playcalling will change, not just the playbook. A shift to more high percentage throws that get athletes open in space and away from running into a stacked box on first down would mean that the playbook doesn't have to change all that much.

other than just the perception of pure nepotism, I do not understand the vitriol towards Jay.

Very good recruiter, solid production from his units both at TE (Butt won the Mackey fergodsakes), and RB (first 1000 rusher since '11, top 10 rushing offense).

Yes, he is Jim's son. He is still a very good contributor to this program. It's not like the Harbaugh coaching lineage is suspect.

Because it was pure nepotism.  Jay was not deserving of a position coach at a Power 5 school like Michigan who has only so many positions available.  Many didn't like it when he put him on staff. All that said, he has been OK.  Not bad, not great, but OK as a position coach and recruiter.  We have seen a good many experienced (Drevno, Pep) do less for a lot more money.

There are no more excuses. This thing should work now.

If it doesn’t and we still see the same idiotic playcalling, we’ll now know the problem.

if the keys are truly turned over to Gattis, it will be different.

McDaniels had been expected to be the new WR coach after McElwain left, correct? I wonder if this means Gattis is going to be more hands on with the receivers in addition to his coordinator/play calling duties, or if there's more shuffling to be expected.

Disappointing that it didn't work out here with Pep because I believe he's a good guy and a fairly good football coach. However his offenses really struggled against the teams it mattered against most and this was a change that had to be made. All the best to him.

Yeah, he seems like a good guy, and the players seemed to like him, but I can't think of a single positive thing that he did, and I've never seen anyone else point to anything either. You can argue about just how much influence he really had, but the fact that nobody can point to anything good, combined with some truly WTF passing concepts, just about says it all...

It wasn’t Drevno or Pep. Harbaugh is the one dictating how he wants things done. This is still a team that takes dumb penalties, has trouble getting routine plays off in time, and is not capable of running a hurry up offense or a two minute drill. Michigan will come in to November out of gas and nursing injuries as usual. Who will be the whipping boy when Michigan loses to first year coach Ryan Day in November?
