Dylan McCaffrey enters transfer portal

I would call this timing... interesting. It would almost seem that he was waiting to find out what Michigan's coaching staff would look like next year before he officially decided.

i really wished he was the guy last fall. i thought he was the perfect harbaugh QB; good size, can run and seemed to take care of the football.

i'm sure he will do well wherever he goes.

Except for the interception on his first drive, I thought he looked better than anyone else um had on the roster in the 2018 “Game”. Albeit it was in extended garbage time in the 4th qtr he looked to be playing with intensity that no one else had in that game, including Patterson. Many here kept saying “just wait” till he gets “His” QB. I think part of the problem of QB development is that Harbaugh is waaaay too impatient with the young QB’s and looked to grad transfers. I thought it was his lack of recruiting rather than development. Harbaugh has recruited on level with the brand nationally and a pretty competitive level with OSU @ QB’s. That’s pretty consistent for the most part that you should expect QB not to be one of the areas of concern in competing with anyone in the BIG 10 including OSU. Had no idea Harbaugh has been recruiting @ such a high level @ QB all these years. Caught me off guard, honestly. The quickest way to turn it around is to add a few top 3 SDE,LB’s,RB,WR’s. Exactly the strategy that got Dabo & Clemson over the hump with a top rated QB, Deshaun Watson(McCarthy) So yes it’s very possible Harbaugh gets it turned around by 2022/23. The only obstacle would be if OSU holds onto Quin Ewers and his skill set translates well to the college level.

I don't think it is so much recruiting per se - I think it is talent evaluation and development. I look at some of the other positions where it appears we have really done well over the last decade like running back and receivers. Two five star running backs - Greene - Walker - were both probably not 5* backs due to HS competition. Other schools may have picked up on that and stopped recruiting them. The development of the WR is another issue - like DPJ.

Let the McCarthy era begin now. Most talented QB they’ve had on the roster since Henne. I think Harbaugh will go with Cade because he can’t afford to go through freshman growing pains at this point. He needs to win every game possible but if the competition is even close they should roll with the true freshman and see what “speed in space” can really be. McCarthy looks like he’s going to be special. Haven’t been able to say that about a Michigan QB in the Harbaugh era.

I'm excited about JJ too.  He's the 3rd best recruit UM has ever had at QB only behind Mallett and Henne.  But, you know the other guys most closely ranked to JJ in UM's top recruits in history?  That would be Kevin Grady, Aubrey Solomon, & Derrick Green.  I'm not suggesting recruiting isn't important, but I am suggesting the hit rate, even of highly ranked guys, is not that great.  The reality is Cade has two years ahead of him in Gattis' system and has college playing experience under his belt.  I agree JJ has potential, but I won't anoint him anything before he ever plays a snap at UM.  He's gotta prove it just like everyone else and Cade is likely the favorite at this point.

McCarthy looks like he's going to be special.

Let's go back in the last 10+ years of UM recruiting according to fans...

"Mallet looks like he's going to be special."

"Forcier looks like he's going to be special."

"Gardner looks like he's going to be special."

"Morris looks like he's going to be special."

"Peters looks like he's going to be special."

"McCaffrey looks like he's going to be special."

Quite the track record with highly rated QB recruits! One of these years, right!? I find it ironic that the best QB's UM has had recently have been two 3* guys no other big programs were really recruiting (Rudock and Speight), one of which was a transfer that had lost his starting job.

Did you not see Cade light it up before he got hurt?

Don't get me wrong here, I also believe Cade is the favorite.  But, Milton also lit it up his first game.  It's a lot harder to perform once teams have film on you and know what you want to do.  Then, we see if you can make adjustments and take what the defense gives you rather than just force what you want.  So far no QB in a UM uniform on the roster has proven he can perform consistently as a starter.

Honestly I can’t even remember all of it. Someone posted it on here when the news first broke about him leaving. Something about Dylan thought he might have had COVID or an illness and Harbaugh basically gave him the toughen up speech. His parents didn’t like how Jim made light of a potentially dangerous situation. As I stated, someone else posted it, so I don’t know how much validity it has. If it’s true then I can see why he’s leaving. Of course there are always rumors posted about stuff. There have been other rumors about Harbaugh getting mad at players for sitting out and such when he thinks they should be playing. Did Milton play injured after game 1 because of this attitude? Did Cade play more against Penn St when injured than he should have? I don’t know and I hope not but Jim is the ultimate competitor.

So basically this is exactly what we all already knew.

Michigan rewarded failure (Harbaugh) and exit McCaffery.

BTW. You never. EVER. EVER. just let a McCaffery gene pool leave.

This is a terrible take by Hole. Let’s assume a brand new staff came in and loved Dylan. How would all of the players reacted when he’s the new QB1, after bailing on his team?

This is just a formality. He wanted to leave, because Milton beat him out and he wanted to finish up his degree (yay!) and now he’s leaving.

He would(should) only be the QB1 if he earned it in practice. And if his team saw he gives them the best chance at W's in practice then his team would have his back and want him to start.

Milton got picked to start with minimal team practice time. There was no 'Milton beating Dylan' out because there was no real competition. Look up the time line.

Go use that harbaugh development wisely for your dad at NorCol. Nobody wants him like no nfl team wanted shay patterson. Go blew!

Why?

Help me out here.  DM stayed in school at Michigan.  The term is over.  Guessing he probably wants to play spring ball, so isn't the timing of this spot on in that regard?

Not sure how it goes but you can enter the portal and still stay in school. I assume Willie Allen wasn’t sitting at home this past semester. He went to school at La Tech and enrolled at Michigan in January even though he committed to playing football at Michigan in October.
