Dude, Do You Even Go to Work Anymore? When Was the Last Time You Were At your Normal Place of Business?

Submitted by xtramelanin on April 28th, 2020 at 9:41 AM

Mates,

Curious, when was the last time you went to your normal place of business?  I know some of you/us have been going in regularly, but for others they have been either WFH (true name: Work In Pajamas and I claim the patented acronym: WIP) or have unfortunately been furloughed altogether for some period of time.

So the questions are these:  When was the last time you were at your regular place of work?  Is it going to be weird getting back into a routine that has been disrupted for going on 2+ months?   Do you think  you might wear your PJ's to work by accident?

Hope you and your families are all well,

XM

Almost same thing with me. Went on vacation Feb. 19th, before this whole C-19 was a thing. When I came back, was when the first offical C-19 death happened (I live near Seattle). Making matters worse, I came back with a cold, so my work put me into WFH quarantine almost immediatly out of precaution. Towards the end of my quarantine, the lockdown started

I'm amazed at how unproductive I am at the office.    So many small interruptions that continually break my concentration, plus useless meetings that suck larger amounts of time.    I would always subsidize that lost time by either arriving at the office very early when nobody else was in or working evenings and/or weekends to truly get stuff done.

I'm in such a groove working from home.   I'm working 8 to 5-ish and loving it.   Useless meetings are now productive because I can multi-task if the virtual meeting doesn't require my active participation (with 4 internet users at home, bandwidth can't always support my video appearance at meetings!).

I'm also an introvert by nature, so I'm fine working in my basement office without continual human interaction.   I'm convinced I could thrive as a bona fide hermit.

I still go to work. Strangely enough I actually switched jobs in the last month, even. I suspect I have a strangely warped perspective on this crisis, because I'm quite sure a lot of Americans are struggling right now. Once upon a time I lived paycheck to paycheck so I have to sympathize somewhat with restless people or some of the protesters who feel the pressure to get back to work.

March 13 was my last day in the office.  Working from home has been a challenge (3 kids under 10 and no dedicated office space at home), but I still have a job at full pay.  I work in Chicago for a major (Fortune 8, I think) company as in house counsel.  We had a legal town hall yesterday with our General Counsel, and he said return to the office is measured in "months, not weeks".  I'm itching to get back to the office, but given that one of my kids is medically complex and at high risk to COVID, I'll stay home as long as needed.

March 12. Can't wait to return and interact with colleagues. No on PJs, I've tried my best to maintain a normal-ish routine, but wearing a collared shirt seems strange at home so there's that.

March 13th, then my son was born on March 16th, and I just started work again on Monday after parental leave. I'm WFH indefinitely, and there are talks about my whole division (IT support) staying WFH more than 50% of the time to save costs. Apparently management finally now believes that we can be just as productive at home as in the office despite us claiming as much for the last 5+ years. Go figure.

Our firm never closed. We allow anyone who wants to work from home do so, but the office is still open. Only a handful of us come in. I go into the office because I wouldn't be able to do all aspects of my job at home.

Last day was March 19th, WFH thereafter. Good parts and crappy parts about WFH. Being without my 2 giant computer screens was the hardest part to deal with for me since I have an old 19” screen and the tiny little laptop screen.

I've worked from home for close to 10 years now, but my kid has been home from daycare for about 6 weeks and my wife is working from home for the first time as well. Even though working from home isn't new to me, it's much different having everyone else home with me. Many more distractions and I can't just hole up in my home office all day.

I've been very fortunate by that I still have my job and that I have not been in lock down. I have been going to work albeit we do not have normal business hours. My main concern now is the economy. The shelter in place mandate is wreaking havoc that I don't think the politicians really care about. I know families who are on the brink.

Late Feb for me. But I'm still working, when I feel like it. I'm thankful that I'm able to carry on like this, whereas many are not so lucky. Now, I couldn't maintain like this for a whole lot longer, maybe through the end of the year. Hoping it doesn't come to that, but for the near future I'm still operating as if we're under lock down.

My office in NYC has been closed since March 9th. Very weird working from home all this time. but getting my company to pay for a home office setup (desk, extra monitor, etc.) has been very nice. I have mixed feelings about ever returning to the office.

I work in IT in a large office (couple thousand people) and have two roommates: a physician's assistant and a guy that is dating a nurse, so I started working from home March 12th like many others as soon as there was a confirmed case or two in the area.

It'll definitely take some readjusting back to the office, but less because of the setting and more because everyone's had their hours/salary cut 50%. I'll be glad to get back to making what I was used to, but it'll take some time to ramp up the work on projects that have been put on hold so it'll probably be slow for the first couple weeks.

I don't mind working from home, technically it doesn't matter as long as I have an internet connection, but I definitely get distracted more at home.

Currently working part time on-site and part time from home.

Ohio is reopening in phases starting this Friday and looking like I'll be on-site full time again starting Monday (with significant reductions in staff and operations still).

My company provides Internet, phone and mobility service to small businesses in about 18 states, and our VoIP product allows people that work at small businesses to work from home.  We are an essential business and have to stay open, so I have been working 5-6 hours a day in the office.  We are working skeleton shifts to limit the number of people in the office at all times and adhere to social distancing guidelines, and anyone that does not need to be in the office can work remotely when possible.  Luckily we have not had to furlough or lay-off any employees. I do not love having to go out of the house right now, but recognize that I am also fortunate to get a daily break so I don’t get cabin fever.

March 9 or 10, I can't remember. My wife is a recent cancer survivor and has other immune system issues, so I started staying home a bit earlier than some. I can work from home as much as I want normally, but I usually keep it to <=1 day per week and really don't like >2 days.

Being home everyday isn't terrible, but it is getting old. I often work on projects and with people around the country, so I'm no stranger to telecons/videocons, but the volume has increased substantially and that too is getting old.

I work in an essential industry in California, but I am a desk-worker, so my last day at the office was March 13.  I live alone, but am also a natural introvert so have managed to deal with the isolation fairly easily.

I was surprised at how easily I changed into the new routine - as others have noted - I may do this every now and then once we get back to full operation.

I haven’t worked out of the office for several years now. I ignore my office extension, which I still have despite not having an office phone; mostly it gets telemarketing calls and the occasional weirdly misdirected customer.

Ironically I was going to make a push to go into the office more often this year.

I'm in medical device sales. Call on 6 major hospitals. Three of them have told me I cannot come in no matter what right now. Another that's been telling me that for 6 weeks might let me in today per a surgeon recommendation that I be there to assist in two surgeries.

My company sent me a "medically necessary" cert so I have that going for me, which is nice. But I'd prefer to go to zero hospitals right now.

All that said I went from WFH about one day a week during normalcy to only going in 4 times in the last 7 weeks.

All this and I'm planning to move across the country in the next few weeks. Interesting times on all fronts.

I teach trombone lessons, and I have two different teaching jobs- one at a big music store, the other at an arts magnet high school. The school closed down pretty early, so the last day I was there in person was March 12. The last day that I went in to the store was the day the shelter-in-place order went into effect, March 23rd.

Since both closures, about half of my students have moved to taking lessons via Facetime, with the others either not being interested in studying that way, or not trusting their internet connections enough.

I just got back from my work site a few minutes ago. I’ve been working maybe 60% trying to keep a master bath remodel progressing that started three days before MI ‘s shutdown. It’s an empty house and the woman who’s moving in is disabled so we’ve convinced the city (A2) and subcontractors that we are working safely and we are “pseudo” essential. But then a sunny 60* Monday comes along (yesterday) and I say wth and play hooky and go for a two hour mountain bike ride. Timelines don’t really exist anymore... work whenever or not...Sunday is not different than Tuesday.

Haven’t been to the office since March 16th. My wife and I moved into a new house a week later, which was stressful as shit with all of this going on. I have a pretty nice office set up now, so I don’t really want to go back now. I will, however, so I will at least try to work from home 1-2 days once we go back. That is a vague return during the summer, depending on North Carolina guidance.

March 19th. Went to Ft Meyers beach March 21st to 27th, flew back home and haven't left since, except to Kroger and Target. Sweatpants and a decent shirt do the trick for me.

I haven't been at the office since April15th but I go in for one day this upcoming Thursday. What is nice is I am still getting paid for 40 hours even though I might work for 6 hours out of my day. Last Friday during our zoom meeting the owner told us to take it easy, get some R&R and don't worry about trying to work the full 8 hours everyday. Little does he know I was already doing that!

March 12th officially. I've been into the school twice since then, once to do my end of year clean out tasks. I wouldn't mind going in to my classroom by myself to do my distance teaching, but the district shut down our keycards so that we couldn't do that so that the custodial staff didn't have to keep on cleaning so much. Now that we are TFH (TIP?) the rest of the year, the district is getting a slight jump on some of the summer renovation projects, so there is a tiny silver lining.

I think that school in August will look different than it did last August, but I'm not sure how much. I'll not worry about that until after we finish up these last six weeks. No chance of wearing just my 'pajamas' to school, though.

Last day at work was 3/24.  Moved a desk home 3/25.  Haven't been back to the office since.  Probably going back next week, as things have started to relax here (Colorado), but won't be full-time at the office yet.

Yesterday.  We've been doing online orders, home delivery, and curbside pickup this entire time.  Don't even have to come into contact with people and still getting out of the house.  It's great.

Last night, 5:00. Heading in at 1:00 after taking the morning off to hunt turkeys with my son. There are 7 of 22 left in my office and mgmt said that was enough distancing. I prefer it since there are four at home doing school: 7th, 12th, college Jr and my wife teaching. I don't think I'd have enough bandwidth to do my work.

They've been extremely quite in SW MI. I've been out 5 times and have yet to see a tom. We had one answer on the "last call of the day," too far away to wait him out before I had to head in to work. I've heard numerous hens and had a few lead a tom away from me on Sunday. That was the only close encounter I've had and I didn't even see that bird.

My son is hunting/calling for himself for the first time and he brought in 4 toms yesterday but they hung up 100 yards away in the woods, gobbling out over a creek bottom.

We think that there are still many hens not on the nest. We're hearing a yelp followed by a gobble then 30 minutes of silence. Then another yelp followed by another then 30 minutes of silence. Those toms sure do have stamina!

Another reason they might be so quiet: the coyote situation is out of hand where we hunt. I called in a 'yote yesterday but couldn't get a good shot on him. We also have heard many yips and barks when we call. I'm wondering if the birds have learned to keep quiet so as to not attract predators.

The kicker? I got in to work and there was a tom strutting behind the building across the street for about 45 minutes. It backs up to a creek bottom that runs through some subdivisions that the birds and deer use as a highway. So I got to watch him for a while. It helped to ease the frustration

Still go yo work 5 days a week, but to the back of a Statcare rather than the main hospital. I am essentially quarantined here as I rarely see anybody, the staffing here having been cut with furloughs.

Tomorrow is 6 weeks. Guessing 4-5 more minimum. Right now it's not so great but if kids were at school and wife was working I would be trying to make this happen more often. There is no need for me to be in the office ever really. I should be WFH besides client apptmts. Doesnt seem my work will look at it that way though from what I'm seeing so far.
