Don Brown--Diversion and Speed (short film, play analysis)

Submitted by Ezekiels Creatures on October 6th, 2019 at 9:11 PM

This is 1 play from yesterday, analyzed by former NFL player Joshua Perry.

I know it's a short video. But it shows how on fire the defense was yesterday. And it's fun to watch.

Brown is coaching his guys up and turning them around after a bad performance against Wisconsin. I wish the offense would do the same.

MSU also doesn't get the same game plan and preparation Michigan does. MSU has an excellent defense regardless of what their individual recruiting rankings were coming out of high school and that's always been the case for them.

We should probably first figure out how to score more than 14 points on a legit defense than worry about what Brown's defense is gonna do in that game.

Is it? I didn't state anything other than the obvious from what we've seen after 5 games into the season. OSU has demonstrated they can put up points on anyone. The defense can slow them down sure, but you have to outscore them to beat them. So far, Michigan has not put up more than 14 points against a top-25 defense. Those are the facts.

Doesn't mean they can't do it, just that they haven't done it and it's been sloppy on offense so far. The crux of that game will be slowing their offense down enough to outscore them on the other side of the ball. I don't see any scenario which Michigan can expect to win that game 17-13, etc. The offense will need to be prepared to score points in that game if they have a chance to win it, that's my point.

First, UM recruits better than MSU, but Willekes & Williams are better than our DEs or DTs.  I don't think that's coaching personally.  They are just good players that outplayed their recruiting profiles.  Second, OSU doesn't prepare for MSU the way they do for UM and if you think they do you're crazy.  There are no MSU tackling dummies.  There are no countdown clocks for the MSU game.  They don't refuse to wear green.  They don't refuse to say MSU.  They don't have speeches every year for MSU.  They don't prepare for them year round.  And, they don't play them the last game of the year every year.  Yes, MSU deserves credit for outperforming their recruiting and beating OSU more than UM in recent history.  And, yes UM and Brown deserve criticism for last year's performance against OSU.  But, to think MSU gets the same preparation and effort from OSU as UM does is simply incorrect.  And, if you think that doesn't impact OSU's performance in the games you're either just frustrated by it or not thinking clearly.  It makes a difference.

I don't understand.  Do people have no concept of game script at all?  If our offense is struggling terribly and we look like we won't score more than 10 points (like MSU), then we may well hold them under 30 points.  Because they will try and bleed clock and secure the win (and likely their spot in the Big Ten Championship) by doing so.

On the other hand, if our offense is actually moving the ball and getting it in the end zone, then of course they'll continue hunting TDs and it's harder to keep them down.  MSU didn't deal with that.  They dealt with the former.  Unless you feel like Indiana and OSU have roughly equivalent quality offenses.

The Game is still far away, but clearly our offense needs to figure a whole lot out to get it into a situation where they FEEL like they have to keep scoring to win the game.  Hopefully we get it there, and then our defense does enough to pull off a home win.  But the nonsense "MSU held them to 34 and we can't hold them under 30!" thing is nuts.

Iowa's scoring through 5 games: 38, 30, 18, 48, 3...  (hums to himself) "one of these things is not like the others...".  The defense forced 4 turnovers, collected 8 sacks, and allowed 1 rushing yard (Iowa averaged 217.5 rush ypg before UofM)...  And for all the crap we've given Don Brown over O$U, UF and Wiscy, I saw his unit do something the offense hasn't proven capable of; they've adjusted!

I love how a former OSU player in Joshua Perry is singing praise on Don Brown.

But joking aside, this Speed and Diversion approach, or however you want to call it, is something we need to do more in order to keep other offenses honest.

Its Iowa. Lets not start sucking ourselves off. If Brown can hold PSU under 20 in Happy Valley, we can start building statues.

Exactly. I thought this fanbase already learned their lesson about Don Browns defense being exposed by teams with competent offenses.

Don Browns defenses have always looked good until...….they don't and crash and burn

I saw adjustments and creativity from the defense in this game (something I didn't see from them in the blowout losses).  Seeing how Iowa's offense performs against PSU next week could clear some things up a little (I know, transitive property, blah, blah, blah).  If we don't put any points on the board, though, it won't matter how good the D is playing.

I know the defense didn't have a great game against Wiscy, but without Dwumfor they were kinda screwed...maybe even with him.  Until Jeter, Smith, or Hinton develop we don't have a NT sized player that's any good.  And, good defenses have trouble holding good offenses under 20 pts.  That was the whole point of Gattis.  Iowa has no business holding us to 10 points.  The offense needs to put up over 30 points in every game.  That's the problem.

Im going to have to see this defense vs PSU before getting my hopes up.

Stanley was making god awful throws even when there wasn't pressure. Mobile QBs in big games seem to avoid Browns blitzes and break off good runs. Stanley is incapable of that so he was a sitting duck

I just don't feel like being hurt again thinking we have an elite defense and then getting blasted by a good offense lol

Maybe so but Brown fixed the running game issues that plagued them against Wisconsin. Iowa came in wanting to run and couldn't. Yes their QB was a statue but he's a senior and pretty good and was still helpless.

PSU and Notre Dame will be much stiffer tests for the defense but at least they are adjusting personnel and schemes. The offense literally bangs its head against the same brick wall every week. It's like they don't even try to change anything. They walk around saying "oh we're hitting our stride and playing mistake free". What a bunch of delusional bullshit!

I'd agree that we have a good, but not elite defense.  We don't have an elite d-line that get pressure with 4 without blitzing or an elite back 7 that can cover if pressure doesn't get home.  Lavert Hill is really good.  Matellus is super solid, but not spectacular.  Hutchinson, McGrone, and Dax Hill are budding stars, but still growing.  But, we don't have an elite DT or WDE that can generate a reliable pass rush against better lines and we generally have at least one corner/safety spot that is weaker than the other.

we mixed in zone, and ran some new blitz schemes Saturday.

D Brown is earning his pay, and still driven to work on his craft at this stage.

Most complaints about Brown come from legit dumb people. Everyone can see the offense has been between crap and average for many years now, but also everyone with half a brain can see that the D has won games for us time and time again.
