That's true. I just find it weird that someone can from "probably not going to take an official to OSU" to committing right after the visit. Wasn't the first time he was on campus there so something must have really appealed to him during this particular visit
My guess is Holtmann is pitching opportunity. Since he's a newer coach to OSU, he can pitch the whole rebuilding thing and that he can be a cornerstone of that. That's my best guess, as current situations definitely point to Michigan if he wants to be a part of development, deep tournament runs, etc.
They could credibly offer him all the starting minutes he could handle.
No way could we say that with a straight face. Our PGs usually need a couple years to learn how to play in out system.
Short term decision though. Hope the kid didn't have dreams of being on a final four caliber team.
That rationale does to add up. Why would the promise of starting minutes be convincing only once they get him on campus? Do you think that they did not talk about starting time minutes before he got on campus? Of course they did.
Yet the guy went from 'not sure I will even visit to OSU' to OSU commit just after the visit.
Something happened during the visit that changed everything. And it makes no sense that the thing that happened during the visit was OSU telling him he would start as a freshman. 100 percent certain they had been telling him that since way before the visit
So...what is something that has the power to change a guy's mind that could only happen during a visit but really could not have happened before a visit? Hmmm...

That's my thinking and why I find this all so weird. Like it's not like this is the first time he ever stepped foot on OSU campus and it was a "love at first" sight type thing
These are high school kids we are talking about here. Even the smarter ones make stupid and impulsive choices.
Holtmann has a pretty good reputation, and I doubt he’s paying kids to come to OSU. It simply is the opportunity to re-build a program. Not every kid wants to come to a ready made program. Some like embracing the challenge of building something from the ground up. Maybe DJ is one of those kids. Beilein had to do similar things when recruiting a kid like Darius Morris.
Talk about a donkey punch. Still, this program has overcome far worse against all odds to become a truly elite program in college basketball. It doesn't weather storm, it is the storm
....or dong punch....
Don't know what that guy did to deserve that but that piece of shit #5 would be getting a swift ass kicking. I'm not a bad ass or a cheap person when it comes to fighting but that bitch would get knocked on the ground while I speared him from behind and kicked right in the back of the head on his front lawn in front of his sons. Did I mention I'm not a bad ass?
He has almost a guaranteed starting spot at OSU. Hard to blame him with that in consideration. This will not sting if DDJ develops and we get another solid PG in 2019. It’s a position I’m pretty confident in under JB
From 11 Warriors:
"Carton figures to add to an already stacked Ohio State backcourt that is set to at least feature Florida State transfer CJ Walker, and could also feature a sophomore Luther Muhammad, assuming he doesn't leave for the professional levels after his freshman year."
So...uh...playing time doesn't seem like the big consideration.
If I remember right, wasn’t C.J. Walker a combo guard? Or did he lose his job to a combo guard?
either way, he and Luther are not as deep a room as Simpson, Brooks and DeJulius.
Chances are all those guys wouldn’t be there if Carton committed
Walker is nothing more than a role player and Muhammad is a combo guard. More likely to play the 2. Plus, Carton is a top 25 (maybe better) player. I would be shocked if he isn’t one of their better players from day 1. I really like him as a player
Well, if true, this is a big bummer. But there are a few bright sides here. One is that Michigan is pretty good at the PG position for the next 2-3 years assuming Brooks improves quite a bit by next year. Would Carton have still been a big get? Yes, of course. But, I think Michigan can still win just as much without him.
Two, is that this opens a scholarship spot for another really good player - maybe at a position we're not as deep at. Maybe this will really help now with Girard. I think Beilein will still get another very good player to fill the spot. It'll be interesting to see who the staff starts to really focus on.
I would say that we need to look at SG. We seem thin there, especially if Poole goes early to the NBA (which I think is likely).
What is Holtmann telling recruits? Like they already have the #30 and #22 players in the country compared to their highest recruit from 2018 being #75... they had a pretty good seaon, but like fizzled out in the postseason
Probably better chance at playing time.
Holtman was hired very late in the recruiting process, scrambled just to get Dakich in desperation as they had no depth @ guard.
It's a bummer, no doubt. But turn up the heat now on Rocket Watts. He might be a better fit than Carton for Michigan anyway. Can play either guard spot.
I agree, Watts is also slowly creeping up the rankings and is a straight gunner
Yes, I want any guy named Rocket. The fact that he is a local kid and would seem to be a good complement to DeJulius makes it all the better.
The thing about this is it’s going to sting to watch him go to OSU and have to play him but a lot of analysts think he’s less likely to be a 1-and-done than most 5 stars are. Also he measured in at the 18u national team event at like 5’11 which seems weird considering he’s listed at 6’2 on most sites. I just think the recruiting miss is more about two seasons away compared to the coming year
Good luck to him. I do remain amazed that people could look at what Beilein does with kids and think "Nah, let me go to this program that somehow featured the guy who was the B1G player of the year drafted in the second round."
But whatever. Beilein will just get some other recruit to be a 1st-rounder and help lead the team deep into the tournament as opposed to flaming out in the first weekend.
It really doesn't make sense. Carton has literally said in interviews that one of his main criteria was to be developed. I guess development doesn't go through the minds of 5*s, it's more "where is the best place for me to go a year before declaring for the draft" which is odd considering I definitely don't consider Carton a one-n-done based on his height
That and academics are often just bullshit because they think it makes them sound better
He ain't going there to play school!
I agree a lot of it must be related to going to the draft. I don't have OSU's depth chart in front of me, but if they were playing Dakich double-digit minutes last year it probably wasn't all that deep at PG, and Carton is good enough to play meaningful minutes from day 1. But he's not a physical freak and maybe his best college analog is a Jalen Brunson type, who needed years to physically mature into the type of player he was as an upperclassman.
Again, I wish him all the luck in the world - guys should go where they want to go. But too many guys, I think, believe they are ready for the NBA because they beat up on HS kids, and more times than not unless you are a top-5/10-ish athlete, that first year in college is a huge wake-up call and then you're sorta stuck between going in the draft and maybe slipping to the second round or returning to school and maybe not getting a great deal of development.
If you want to deal with X (or is it Z still?) that’s up to you
Hail
It is confirmed that he still goes by X. There should be a board version of chatbot for this frequently asked equation.
I'm probably in the great minority here, but I don't see Carton as a huge loss.
DJ is a very good prospect, but I don't necessarily think he would've been a great fit at Michigan. A 5'10-5'11 PG/CG with an average shot in an offensive system that is almost entirely half-court (as opposed to heavy usage of transition) just doesn't seem to be an ideal fit.
Frankly, I think Carton probably made a good decision to go elsewhere based on fit and depth chart. And I also think Michigan will be just fine without DJ for the identical reasons.
Where do you think Michigan goes from here? Harlond Beverly? Rocket Watts? Cole Anthony? Do we just settle for the PGs we have right now?
Beverly - not a PG by any stretch of the imagination. He's essentially a SF in the body of a CG. I personally don't see a great fit there and I imagine the staff feels the same...…...hence no offer.
Watts - his father wants him at Michigan, but his surrounding camp does not. As of now, I think Watts lands somewhere else for a variety of reasons and I'll leave it at that.
Anthony - do it all PG that probably lands somewhere else because Duke, Kentucky and others are involved.
If none of those prospects seem realistic, where do you see Michigan realistically going now? Looking at our current top targets, we don't seem to be in a super good place with any of them. Girard seems like a Syracuse guy. Williamson seems like a Kansas guy
I believe Duke is the favorite to land Josiah James at PG, so maybe that pushes them out of the Anthony sweepstakes. I know his mom is a Michigan grad and his dad has always been impressed with Beilein. Doesn't seem like a Kentucky kid based on the system they play.
Any info on who Michigan will look to target now?
I agree, Matt. I would have loved to have had him, but we have a bigger need at the 2 for the 2019 class (if you think Poole is a 2 or 3 year player). This will give us the scholarship to sign one, and we have a few good prospects on the line. I expect a commit soon.
A kid that I would be at the top of my PG list based on talent and fit would be Tre Mann out of Florida. Kid is literally Trey Burke plus 2-3 inches. Doubt we get involved this late in the game, but that would be my ideal pickup at PG.
At the wing, McDaniels would be my first choice followed by Sam Williamson.
I was just recalling you saying that you were not as high on DJ coming here as others were. Do you think we try to go all out for McDaniel? And possibly pass on taking a PG this season
The biggest need on the roster is an isolation player that can create off the dribble and score when the offense breaks down. It was definitely a sore spot last year without doubt. I think Poole has some tools to work with in that regard, but obviously the jury is still out.
Jaden McDaniels is the obvious choice, but he's going to be a tough pull but we do have family connections. I think Williamson will develop into that eventually, but he's another tough pull from Texas.
It is very possible we end up with a kid that isn't on the radar as of right now.
I wish him the worst possible career in Columbus.
247 already had him listed as an OSU verbal.
Tough loss but in this case I think that’s the smart decision. With brooks dejulius and Simpson it makes no sense to have a 4th PG in 2019. It’s possible that Simpson has a breakout year and. Brooks transfers but u can’t guarent that. Now enjoy losing to us. Makes the rivalry more fun when stuff like this happens. GO BLUE!!
I'm sure the team/coaches feel differently but for a Michigan fan living in Ohio, there really isn't a rivalry feel to the basketball games. 95% of the OSU fans around here will quickly tell you basketball "doesn't matter" if you bring it up .

Jeez. Duke had a shitty 2018 class. Probably just a down year.
Don’t care to hear this but we are set at point for the next few years. It’s gonna be fun watching Simpson/DeJulius battle Carton.
If you are a 5 star PG and you know Beilein is recruiting that position every year eventhough the guy(s) in front of you are not leaving, you look for the place where you will have a shot to play from day one on campus, it seems like a no brainer to me. Yes we all understand Michigan is the better program but to him he has an better path to start at OSU and that matters.
