The DJ Carton story according to Chris Holtman

Submitted by GhostofJermain… on December 2nd, 2019 at 12:52 PM

The local sports radio 97.1 just had CH on for his weekly presser.  They started to talk about Carton a little, and CH said he wanted to tell the listeners the whole story on DJ up to this point.  CH starts with playing time was a major factor in DJ decision, but had some other interesting things to say as well.  CH says that it was summer and DJ had just visited both Michigan and Indiana in back to back weekends.  The plan was for DJ to make his decision later in the cycle, but CH got a call from DJ parents saying that they wanted to see OSU again, and that DJ was very close to making a decision right then, so if OSU had any shot it needed to happen quickly.

CH and staff knew that had to get him on campus that weekend, only one problem, this was also the same time as peach jam in South Carolina.  CH goes on to say that he has never had an official visit in the summer like this and that it was going to take his entire staff and some luck to get the deal done.  The guy he was down seeing at Peach Jam was EJ Liddell whom they later got a commitment from.

CH visited DJ and his family the night they got in town, he met with them again the following morning for breakfast before sending DJ to Zoombezie Bay a local waterpark with the team and support staff.  CH goes on to say that the luck might have come from a "Michigan beat writer" who tweets out from Peach Jam that he was surprised to see CH and staff at Peach Jam when a 5* was on their campus for his official.

DJ and his family viewed the gesture as hard work and dedication from CH and staff, and lazy reporting from Michigan. Pulled the trigger shortly there after.

I think you’re supposed to be mad that the Michigan beat writer inadvertently made it clear to the parents that CH and staff worked harder to get their son to go to OSU due to the Peach Jam? Iuno.

I mean it’s nothing new really. Beilein wasn’t really the type to chase recruits 24/7 so... what’s the point of this post?

That may be the dumbest anecdote ever used to try to tweak a rival's nose.  Just say the parents were impressed by the effort he made.  I guar-an-goddamn-tee you the efforts of a fucking Michigan beat reporter had not the slightest thing to do with their decison and if anyone believes this they are crazy.

This story is pure Buckeye-trash and should be treated as such.

Am I bad fan because I have no fucking idea what is going on in this story?  I'm sure it's important (a five star player is involved) and I'm sure everybody else can figure it out but i'm lost.

DJ Carton was a blue-chip basketball recruit who was thought to be a Michigan lean before abruptly committing to Ohio State. Peach Jam is an annual basketball tournament for top high school players hosted by Nike in South Carolina.

Having said that, I don't have any more of a clue about what's going on here than you do. Apparently Chris Holtmann is claiming that tweets from a Michigan beat writer somehow swung Carton's commitment to OSU...?

1. Hard to really get your ire up about Michigan basketball right now

2. If DJ Carton had any thoughts about being a 1-and-done then coming to Michigan to play behind X would not have been a smart move on his part so I do not begrudge him one bit choosing another school. He could have made a better choice, but I get him not going to Michigan.

The only thing I care less about than OSU football right now is OSU basketball. If I wanted to read a recruiting story about OSU hoops, I would just go to their blog.

Carton probably wouldn't be getting any more than like 5-10 minutes max right now.

We are set at the 1 and the 2 this year and next year and most likely 3 years from now.

We win some and we lose some in recruiting and losing Carton doesn't hurt when we have Z already and Eli has become Big Shot Brooks and DDJ is now Walton 2.0.

Z is going to shut down Carton anyways.

Can we just focus on how great our team is, versus wasting any time on a recruiting story from 18 months ago?

This just doesn't sound right at all. So you're telling me that Carton was basically ready to commit to Michigan, but then he wanted to take one last visit to OSU just in case, then he magically takes his visit and commits the next day? $ureeeeee

If the reason you go to a school is because of a tweet from a random third-party (which I don't believe for one second is he went to OSU), then you're probably not going to be a good fit anyway.

Translation...if you want the kid, you'd better make a big offer.

Holtmann should shut his mouth and be grateful nobody at OSU gives a fuck about basketball. If they had the same standards for basketball as they do football his ass would've been canned after his second straight blow out loss to Michigan last year

Two things come to mind when I read this. One, it appears Holtman is trying to stoke a little fire with Michigan here. Not too much, maybe a few small flames. Two, if Cartons parents called Holtman to put in a last ditch effort, I would assume that's where they really wanted him to go. Hes stoked about Michigan and IU, fixing to commit to Michigan, and parents call up OSU to hopefully get a last minute visit?

Anyway, just my thoughts on this. Just beat their ass twice this year and call it a day

Looking forward to our veteran group of players to run it up on Carton and Wesson in basketball this year.  Z will be able to teach him a few things and shut him down.  Teske will run circles around Wesson and have him gasping for air three minutes into the game.

I know literally no Michigan alum who has ever had a "fuck my degree" attitude because of the what the athletic teams do or do not accomplish. If you're questioning the value of your degree because of what happens on the field/court, you need to seriously re-examine your priorities.

Paying for a good basketball team is much cheaper than football.  Fortunately, only 5 play at a time and due to the nature of basketball and the tournament, you can remain relevant or even elite with upper classmen and a few lucky recruiting wins as Beilein showed us.
