(Do I even need the /s?)

I swear that if somehow the NCAA declines Shea’s eligibility and approves yet another questionable 6th year for the Spartans, Mark Emmert may find a flaming bag of crap on his doorstep when I am in Indy this fall. (...They can’t do DNA testing on feces these days right?)

I'd hope you would be saying the same thing if the shoe were on the other foot and Harbaugh was making this call about one of his players. I have a feeling a lot of the folks here blasting Dantonio for this would say "Harbaugh is leaving it to the guys who actually have to play with him to decide." "Harbaugh is giving his team a voice." And so on.

that saying this word is not acceptable by anyone at any time?

That stupid Lil' Dicky-Chris Brown Freaky Friday song is just an example of pop culture glorifying the word and making everyone think that it's entirely acceptable to say it. A bunch of people start singing along to it because it's a top ten song (i.e.: Virginia Tech Women's Lacrosse team); which causes a complete uproar, and then these kids wonder what the problem is. The cycle has to end somewhere.

I think lots of people think that.

And while I agree with you that nobody should be saying the n-word, in my opinion, it's far less offensive if a black person says it than if a white person does. The whole reason the word is offensive is that for many years (and even today), it was used by white people as an insult and a tool of oppression toward black people. When a black person says it, that cultural context is changed.

Lol at all the middle age white guys saying it's ok to say the n word sometimes, it doesn't make you a racist. Thanks for outing yourselves.

ITT:  A surprising amount of people defending the use of the N-word as a slur as a one-off thing in the heat of the moment.  Also deriding the term "racist" as a hurtful insult.  What a time to be alive

Or more apt, people defending people against blanket statements by the judge, jury, and executioner over what his personal mindset is.

I haven't seen a single person say anything other than it was idiotic, wrong, and dipshitted to say, but the moral outrage police are out in full force to brand anyone that disagrees with them as racists.

Who is judge jury and executioner?  Is this a court of law?  The kid called his teammate the N word.  He is a racist piece of shit.  He showed his true colors. While no one is defending use of the word itself, to defend it as simply an "angry outburst" or wondering why anyone can't say the word should not be a natural response.

So you'd go with the blanket statement that anyone who has ever used the n-word is a racist?  No one changes?  No one says stupid shit without thinking beforehand that they didn't even mean?  I don't know what was going through, or is going through his head right now, but I'm not going to throw out a blanket statement because he was a dipshit.  Maybe he's a racist, maybe he is just a dipshit that can't control himself, I don't know.  That's between him and a higher power.

I would absolutely use a dreaded "blanket statement" and say that any white man who has called a black man the N word is a racist.  It's wild that you can use one of the worst, most racially-motivated words against someone and still have jabronis defend you as 'not racist'.

I see both sides of this because it is no doubt a racist comment, but may or may not define his whole character. Also people use a lot of dumb derogatory terms without hating those people (restarted comes to mind). But I mainly wanted to comment to thank you for using the word Jabroni... though it might offend some jabronis out there...

But it’s a part of it. If you get cheated on, and your reaction is, “I can’t believe I got cheated on with a black guy,” you’re probably racist. If your reaction is “I can’t believe I got cheated on with a N-,” you’ve not left a shadow of a doubt.

That doesn’t make up the entirety of his who he is, but it’s frustrating to see people refusing to call a spade a spade.

Are we REALLY suggesting that calling a dude a racial slur is worse than say, what Grant Perry did? Because he’s already been suspended for quite a bit longer than Perry (although he won’t get into legal trouble). Or drunk driving? Or any of the other various mischief that gets shorter suspensions we’re okay with? And apparently a bunch of you think he deserves to be done for life. Yeah, it’s a shitty thing to do but it shouldn’t be a life sentence. This is not defending racism or crying for the “poor racists”, this is just saying the punishment ought to suit the magnitude of the crime (and reflect whether the perpetrator has done the penance he was assigned, which we don’t know). We don’t really know what the guy is like outside this incident - he may be an unrepentant racist or he may be a dumb kid who was dumb and knows better now. I don’t know if I would “leave it to the team” if that means literally putting it to a vote, that feels like it could get toxic. But he certainly ought to take the team’s feelings into account, since they are ultimately the ones that will need to accept him (or not).

I really hope he gets let back on the team....I'm sure this issue will not come back to bite them in any way....especially under times of stress or duress or a losing streak or if he botches a big play. Yup, this will not hurt them or their chemistry or be a distraction at all.....please let this happen.

If you look at their LB corp, where does he even fit anymore? Joe Bachie is better than he ever was, he's not supplanting Andrew Dowell at SAM and even though there's a bunch of guys pushing for the spot at WILL he hasn't been practicing with the team and is trying to a win a job out of training camp after taking a year off. The team should just move on, they had a good year without him and don't need to let the past come back up by letting him back in.

Let them have their racist LB who has a girlfriend (ex probably) who cheats on him with his teammate.  Why do we care?  Let them rot from the inside just like their hypocritical agricultural university.  It is subtraction by addition if that is even a thing.  These guys are never going to have each others' backs again.  Perfect.  Now stop worrying about Sparty's problems so much.

I like how, in a moment where a democratic decision probably might not be the best thing for a coach to make given the circumstances and a long and well-formed assessment might be in order, he's going to leave it to the team to decide. I find that rather illuminating with regards to Mark Dantonio.

As someone who spent part of his childhood in a lily white town in Connecticut, and the other part living in different places around the country where often times, I was the only white person in a group of friends made up of other races (mostly black), it’s a very murky area. I myself have never called any person, any type of slur. Thank the lord both my parents raised me to see everyone equally. But I will say, growing up listening to rap, when I sing along with a song, I’ll sing along with every word. I still do it to this day. Even when I’m with my friends of color, as their singing along with me. In that sense, amongst yourself or friends, I don’t see an issue with it in that particular context. Any other time? Not ok. One issue I noticed growing up, and I’m seeing it a lot with the generation behind mine, is I saw/am seeing white kids using the word as a black person would use it, in a friendly way, to other white kids. Look at the big issue with Josh Allen today, with the Villanova kid, tweets from their high school days being dumb kids and trying to be cool and wanting to be part of the culture. Obviously they were kids saying things they shouldn’t, but I don’t look at either of them as racists at all, just uninformed kids trying to talk the way their favorite rapper, comedian etc might talk. At the same time, when I was younger my friends of color would often refer to me that way as well, though I NEVER said it back, I just never felt comfortable using that word in any way, other than quoting a song. As far as Reske goes, there’s a lot of variables we don’t know (other incidents, more details that never came out etc) but to me, he used the word in a hateful way. Therefore, he’s done. No matter how he grew up, he was and is old enough to know better. When I was about 23 my gf cheated on me and left me for another guy, who happened to be black. I hated the dude, wanted to kill him, but not once did it cross my mind to call him any type of racial slur. Every other name in the book sure, but nothing racial. At the end of the day, if you’re not black, don’t use the word. Just trust me. And for the people saying “they shouldn’t use the word themselves”, as someone else in this thread said, it’s a way for them to take back power over the word. Besides, I’m polish and Irish, and I’ll constantly refer to myself as a polack mick. Just like an Italian person would walk into a room of Italian friends/family and use the g-word amongst themselves. Where’s the outage about that? There isn’t any, and there shouldn’t be. Sorry for the long post, just felt like maybe my personal experiences would shed some light on the topic for people who haven’t been around other cultures much. If not that’s ok too.
