Now compare the QB performances among title contenders in those years with this year. Corum is good enough to win the Heisman, but it's a QB award, only goes to a RB or WR when there is no good QB on a good team...

Mark Ingram beat out Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow.

Derrick Henry beat out Deshaun Watson

Those are some pretty good QBs.

I mostly agree with you though. This century, it's been a "best player on the best team" award, which is usually the QB (since 2000 only four winners weren't QBs). Alabama notably didn't have great QBs until the latter half of the Saban era.

He'll need to show up big against OSU, but I think Corum's definitely got a chance.

Side note: Oddly enough in the 90s only 4 of 10 winners were QBs

2009: Colt McCoy threw for 3,521, 27 TDs and 12 picks at 70.6% completions with another 348 yards and 3 TDs on the ground for a 13-1 Texas team that finished #2 in the AP.

Tebow threw for 2,895 yards, 21 TDs and 5 picks at 67.8% completions, with another 910 yards and 14 TDs on the ground for a 13-1 Florida team that finished #3 in the AP.

2015: Deshaun Watson threw for 4,109 yards, 35 TDs and 13 picks at 67.8% completions with another 1,105 yards and 12 TDs on the ground for a 13-1 Clemson team that lost to Bama in the title game.

Baker Mayfield threw for 3,700 yards, 36 TDs and 7 picks at 68.1% completions with another 405 yards and 7 TDs on the ground for an 11-2 Oklahoma squad that lost to Clemson in the CFP semis.

Those are some pretty impressing stat lines from some really good teams. So I’m not really sure your narrative holds up. It certainly takes a special season from a running back to win it, and I’d assume a big part of their winning had to do with big game performance.

That's the key. Big game performance. If Corum goes full Biakabatuka against OSU and carries us to a win, that's the only path to winning the Heisman. And he still has to keep putting up solid numbers until then.

He might be able to put up flashy stats on a small number of carries the next two weeks. Closing out the season from there will be tough sledding.

Current odds on DraftKings:

Hooker -110

Stroud +190

Corum +1500

Is the season’s emotional hedge to bet Stroud right now? If Georgia beats Tennessee this weekend, they have no shot at the SEC championship and I think that kills Hooker’s hopes. Then Stroud probably wins if they beat UM. If Corum puts up 5 TDs and beats OSU, which is probably what it takes for him to win it, I don’t care about my bet.

If he played in the 1970's he'd be a lock but the game has changed since then.  Now the RB Heisman winner is the exception and RB's drafted in the first round are also rare.

I would like to see an Edge player like Aidan win the prize one year.

That’s amazing! What sucks about the Heisman these days is it almost always gravitates towards QBs who are in the title games. Hopefully this year it gravitates to the running back who is in the title game. Go Blue!

They should make an award for best QB and make a separate award for everyone else, since it seems close to impossible for a non-QB to win it anymore. It gets annoying always seeing Stroud, Young, etc as the leading candidates. Too predictable.

Perhaps. If the argument is give stronger consideration to really finding the best player, that's one thing. But I'm objecting to the idea that QBs have to be disqualified by rule. If QBs are eliminated, then it will just always be a RB. Then we have to disqualify RBs. Then it will always go to a WR. Then we have to disqualify WRs.

From one angle (stats), he's got a good shot.

From another angle (now a QB award), it seems less likely.

Still, it's a very interesting comparison. Thanks for posting.

Thats unbelievable! If we win out, make CJ Stroud look like a little bitch against us and Hooker plays bad against Georgia and Bama then Corum will have an excellent case for the Heisman

This is amazing, but both those guys were just shoehorned into the Heisman by a combo of being on a championship team and slavish grovelling by the mainstream media.
