UP Color Tour Friday POSBANG

Submitted by rob f on September 25th, 2020 at 8:39 AM

I'm doing my first-ever UP color tour and there's plenty of it to POSBANG right now.  Heading today to Pictured Rocks, then tomorrow to The Porkies and Copper Harbor. The weather forecast looks favorable to extending my trip into early next week, which means I won't be subjected to another miserable Lions game this weekend; I'd rather spend my time camping and seeing the sights Up North.

Have yet to see Dennis at any of the campgrounds up here though...

Say "Ya!" to da UP, eh!

Pictured Rocks is absolutely fantastic! If you ever have the opportunity to take the kayak tour along the water edge at the base of the cliffs, DO IT! You won't regret it.

It was really cool. The wife and I did it, along with another couple. I didn't realize it until we got up to the cliffs but there's a bunch of caves along the water line that are large enough for multiple kayaks to fit in! The largest cave the tour guide took us into was HUGE. I'm talking two stories huge. They called it "rainbow cave" if I remember correctly. We did the regular day tour where you left in the morning and went till lunch (bring your own), stopped at a beach and ate / explored, then turned around and headed back.

And these kayaks are legit kayaks. Not your simple Dunham's $100 kayak lol. They had a foot pedal controlled rudder and everything.

Also if you have time, rent a pontoon boat for the day and load up for a picnic on the beach on the far side of Grand Isle.

Easily one of the most sublime locations I've ever completely wasted an afternoon stuffing my face and drinking various forms of adult beverage.

If you are cold water inclined, also a great place to swim, as is all of Pictured Rocks. Here there is a point and a stone arch you can swim under that is pretty cool.

My old man grew up in Iron Mountain so I spent many a summer as a kid up in da UP.  Cousins in Iron River who had homes on a few lakes - simply beautiful up there in "God's Country".  Enjoy!

My mom grew up in Iron River and I agree with your assessment.

rob f: Have a great trip! In case they're not already on your map ...

* I had a good meal at Fitzgerald's in Eagle Harbor this summer. Take-out only, picnic tables on the lake. (Might be a bit cold for that .....)

* On the west edge of the mountains, the Presque Isle River and its falls are spectacular.

Blue - the likelihood of our extended families knowing each other is probably quite high.

My sophomore year @ U of M I met a girl at some random house party (I was partying like it was 1999 because.... it was 1999) we ended up talking for a bit and come to find out she grew up in Iron River.  I get her name and mention it to my Dad since he grew up "one town over".  I tell him and he does a double take. Come to find out he was freshman roommates with HER DAD at U of M (East Quad 1960 something).

Talk about a small world.  He was pretty sure they put them together because they were both from towns in the UP?  That was of course never corroborated but seemed like a plausible explanation.

Awesome! We are sadly winterizing our RV for the season in the Silver Lake area but looking forward to some fall color touring action soon!

Just got back from Marquette/Copper Harbor trip. Amazing colors and above average weather made it really nice. Hit up all the mountain bike trails and quality hikes with the dogs.  Also spent some time in the Porcupine Mountains for a day. But couldn't see shit at  the lake of the clouds lookout, way too foggy

We're having a company golf weekend up at Shanty Creek. We're playing (3) 18-Hole Rounds @ Schuss Mountain, Legend, and Cedar River. Should be fun and everything is paid for. There is one small downside to this weekend though. Have a great Friday and weekend everyone!

I live in Pensacola, Florida.

Looking forward to the 50s at night next week!

Hurricane Sally jacked the area up into a mess.

After I retire, I will take my wife on a trip to the UP.

Go Blue!!!

Born and raised in the UP.   I cannot explain my visceral feeling of joy during the fall color season.   I love it.  I crave it.   I truly miss experiencing it every year and always have this strange urge to move back "home" when the leaves start changing.

Enjoy your trip, Rob.   From all the early reports I've seen, the colors are incredible up there this year.   All my posbangs to you.   And safe travels.

Have a great trip. We purchased a travel trailer this year after a few years of looking. Already planning our trip for next fall, don't even know where to start.
