CJ Stroud is apparently "injured" and will only play in an "emergency capacity" on Saturday, per Ryan Day

“Going into this game, we’ve asked C.J. to probably take these last couple of days off and rest that shoulder,” Day said Thursday on his radio show. “Kyle and Jack have done a good job, and so the plan right now is to probably, we’ll see how today goes, but probably use C.J. in somewhat of an emergency capacity on Saturday and play some of those other guys.”

So is he injured or is he "injured"?

I mean, but wasn't the second half of Oregon his best half of football?  It wasn't until the second half that he starting lighting up the passing game.  The Tulsa game was probably his worst game.  But completion percentage wise, the Minnesota game was just about as bad.  There's no clear deliniation one can point to and say after X his stats are clearly worse or something.

If true, and I trust this info, Stroud can't play his way into a healthy shoulder. After all, there's still 9 more game to be played. OSU will have to bench Stroud until he's 100%.

Sounds like there's a big gap between QB1 and QB2 & 3. Not a fun place to be but OSU has been due for some bad luck and hopefully, their time has come. This could be one of those seasons down in Ohio.

I don’t think that at all. I’m actually starting to think that Day is too proud to bench him and admit that he isn’t the best QB in the room. You have to remember we’re playing Akron this week. We can run out our walk-on QBs and we’d still win by 40. He’s been injured for a while now according to reports. Our “top” corner Banks has also been available in emergency situations this year and just got a few snaps in the Tulsa game for his first ones this season.

Ewers is on campus just for the NIL money. He arrived a semester early (essentially foregoing his redshirt year) so he could get a million dollars to sign autographs. Next season he will have enough time in Columbus to be the starting QB, but that could trigger a clearing of the depth chart above him. Maybe McCord sticks around to be the starter in 2024 when ewers is done, but I can’t see Miller or Stroud sticking around.

What the hell is going on?  I'm sure it's happened, but I don't think I've ever seen something like this announced prior to a game.  I mean they'll probably win with back up QBs, so it may be a smart decision.  But also, if back ups play well, then you've got a QB controversy.  If back ups are terrible, then Stroud has to go in a bad situation possibly injured and now back ups look bad.  It's a small window that Day is shooting for where back ups are good enough to win comfortably, but no so good everyone wants them over Stroud.  Wouldn't it be better to just say he's out no matter what, or just have him start a few series, lean on the running game and then rest him for the second half or something?

Think he doesnt want to outright say Stroud is benched and cause controversy. Day gets to see what the backups have in real game situation. If they look a lot better than Stroud, then Stroud can officially be benched. If they don't, Stroud comes back healed from his injury to start the next game.

Either way, Day needs to find out what he has in McCord. Don't think McCord will be content to sit on the bench beyond this year. Ewers probably in the same situation. Conspiracy theorist in me thinks Day just wants to annoint Ewers starter for next year, so its good to have the waters muddy this year.

Naturally the next guy will come in and be twice as good. And then that guy will get injured in the Michigan game, when Michigan is holding onto a tenuous 13 point lead with 10 mins left in the 4th quarter, and the guy who started the year off as third string will come in, rip off three consecutive scoring drives, including scoring the go-ahead TD with two minutes to go on 3rd and 17 on a flawless fade into the endzone where only Olave or Wilson can catch it.

I've read this story before. I know how it ends.

Don't forget the part where the guy is racing towards the endzone when one of our players punches the ball out, but instead of doing the only thing a loose football does (bounce around wildly with no rhyme or reason) it will harmlessly bounce off the turf right back into the runner's hands in stride as the defense who was aimlessly trying to grab it now watches said runner head towards the endzone

I was fairly certain Michigan was going to lose to OSU in 2019. When I saw Dobbins fumble the ball right to himself, catch it in stride and proceed to run for another 20-25 yards as if nothing had ever happened, I knew right then and there the game was over. I didn't need to see the rest of the game to know that Michigan had absolutely no chance after something like that happened.

That moment was the Michigan-OSU rivalry of the last 20 years, in a microcosm.

He's likely injured but in the same way Fields was injured last year; if they had a ton of faith in him they'd have him play through it but if not this gives them a chance to try someone else out without too many hurt feelings.

He is injured. But he also makes mistakes. He probably needs time to settle in to things at the college level.

But McCord or Miller may take his job. Any higher level consistency and caution with the ball will be welcomed by the coaches and fans there at Ohio.

I would rather see Stroud stay in. Maybe they would have 2 or 3 more losses by the tine they play M. His inexplicable decision making inaccuracy on some pkays is nice to watch Ryan Day deal with.

We all know that the backup will be better. This kind of stuff always works out for OSU.

You mean like when they have a scandal and their football coach is disgraced - at least outside of Columbus - and then they replace him with an amoral coach who had multiple players arrested at his old school, and allegedly quit for health reasons, but is embraced and celebrated because he wins championships?

This is a nothingburger. They're playing Akron.

Stroud's shoulder is clearly sore. Why not give him a week of rest?

If here were completely healthy, it would make sense to get his inexperienced qb some low-risk easy reps.

If the wheels come off and Akron's in the game, Stroud is available to save the "day" (see what I did there?)
