Citrus Bowl - Optimistic takes thread

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on December 8th, 2019 at 6:15 PM

If someone had told us back in August that we would be playing Alabama in January, we would have been ecstatic.

Alabama has been an absolute juggernaut for over a decade now, and beating them could change the entire narrative around our program.

If we lose, so what? Literally no one expects us to win, so no change there. Nevermind the fact that we could easily lose to an inferior team in another "who gives a fuck bowl", like we often do. Our team should be highly motivated for this one.

Steel sharpens steel.

Go Blue!

Here’s my optimistic take: The more top competition we play, the better it is for the team in the long run, win or lose.

Unless you’re the type who can only enjoy a football game when we’re winning easily, it’ll be interesting to see how Michigan matches up against a two-loss Alabama team.

Agree. Not just for Michigan, but college football in general. I want to see more top 25 level teams against each other.

I want to see this staff beat a good team not in the Big House. Been a LONG time Since I saw that last. Beating up on a junk team is irrelevant. For all of you who think we have the right staff, lets see. You got 3ish weeks to plan. We don’t keep JH/Brown/Gattis to win 7/8 games and beat up on the bad big ten teams. We could use a big win. This program needs it. We as fans need it lol.

If you said in August that Michigan was playing Bama everyone would have thought it was in the playoff.

Prove to me that you can win against better teams. I will be happy to say that I was wrong.

ROLL THE TIDE.  Points can be scored on Bama, and we are going to score ALL the points!

Love the matchup.  Two historically great programs.  New Years Day.  Marquee game.  Give me all of that!

There's a difference between OSU and Alabama this year, and honestly my guess is OSU would put a hurting on Alabama if they played.  Maybe I just happened to catch a couple of random Alabama games this year, but when I did I saw a team with a lot of talent but it was really young and prone to mistakes.  And that was with Tua at QB, a Heisman-level QB.  They're better than Michigan but I think people are ignoring just how good this OSU team is and how they seem to have UM's number in a way that maybe other teams don't quite.

If someone told me in August that we'd be playing Alabama in January I would've been ecstatic because that would've most assuredly meant that we were in the CFP finals.

I am excited for the matchup and I am forever the optimist.  I think if we play a really good game on both sides of the ball then we will keep it close and possibly win.  We need some way to mask our small interior D line.  If we fail to stop the run like what happened against OSU then we are in for a long day.

If you tell me I will win the lottery next month I will be ecstatic. When it turns out the lottery is worth $5 I won’t be as excited.

"change the entire narrative around our program."

If I hear this expression one more time, I am going to vomit all over my keyboard.

I thought when Michigan beat ND, it "changed the narrative?"

Even Bama, winning a meaningless bowl game ain't gonna change shit.

It's about the Big Ten and OSU, period.

For the national media it’s about anytime they can mock Michigan and call us overrated. Michigan wins a game and they underperformed. Michigan loses the game and the talk is always about how Jim can’t coach, the players are bad, and the fan base is delusional. Talking badly about Michigan isn’t just reserved for Ohio State and The Big Ten, it’s any time they get a chance. Especially for Finebaum who will talk about this matchup as much, if not more, than the playoffs.

Well... uh... Michigan is overrated. Not sure if you knew that?

I'm curious if there has been a more pre-season overhyped program than Michigan?

Through all of my negative nelly stuff, I WANT this program to be great. When they lost games in my youth, it bleeping ruined my day. But now, I'm going the way of the Lions. Just very apathetic.

At this point, I'm not getting emotionally interested in the team again until they do something of note, ie. Beating OSU or winning a BTT.

I totally agree. So many people in our fan base are saying beating Alabama will changed the narrative about the Michigan program.

NO!!!!!!

It's about defeating OSU and winning the Big 10 Championship and possibly making the playoff.

I mean, that's how Michigan changes the narrative about their program. Some of our fans are now just hoping and digging for other ways to do it, but it's not going to really work.

It would be great if Michigan defeats Alabama, but it's not going to change the main narratives about the program.

They still can't beat OSU and they still can't win the Big 10.

Edit: I apologize. I forgot this was suppose to be the optimistic posts thread.

Beating ND hit the pause button on the criticism until OSU.  It didn't change the narrative because we've been through this before with beating ND.

Beating Alabama would pause the criticism until next season.  I never want to experience another offseason like the one after we lost to South Carolina.

Not true. It will change the narrative that "Michigan (under Harbaugh) can only beat up on weak teams, but loses to good ones" to simply "Michigan has an Ohio State problem it still needs to fix."

A win against Bama would do much to boost confidence among players, recruits, and fans that there is a way and that our goals can be attained.

The offense was rolling in the first half against OSU.  We need to show we can sustain that for four quarters.  That's what the elite teams in college football do now.  Execution, execution, execution for four quarters and 35+ points.

We ain't skeerd.

We have a wining record against Alabama in bowl games:

1987 season Hall of Fame Bowl - W

1996 season Outback Bowl - L

1999 season Orange Bowl - W

My optimistic take is that now I can spend that day with my fiance, and not feel deprived about missing the Michigan game.

If our guys cant get up for Bama then we should just stop going to bowls in general. Honestly for Bama this is going to be a blah game so I think we have an actual chance.

Bowl games have become about motivation to a large degree and Michigan really has a lot of reasons to care more about this than Bama.

I really feel that this is at least an interesting game because it offers a chance for the players and coaches to make a statement. Uche said he was going to play in the bowl game so he and his teammates could get 10 wins this season. If he represents the motivation of the team to get 10 wins and now you know that the win would be against Alabama who wouldn’t be a bit more motivated.
Bowl games outside of the playoffs are still supposed to be fun and create matchups that intrigue. For Michigan the upside is great.
