The Case for Rashan Gary Returning for his Senior Year

Submitted by njvictor on November 2nd, 2018 at 9:21 PM

Is Rashan Gary returning for his senior year a bigger possibility than we think? Rashan Gary has had a pretty uncertain junior year. We know he's an athletic beast, but has been battling injuries almost the entire season and we haven't seen him at his full potential. As of now, a lot of mock drafts don't even have him in the first round anymore after being a top 5 pick prior to the start of the season. While I believe he will still be a first round pick after showing off his athleticism at the combine, some teams will still wonder about how is ability to actually produce. If Gary gets surgery over the summer and comes back healthy for his senior year, I think he has the potential to get back to being a top 5 pick and make a lot more money than he would if he entered the draft this year. Will he do that? I'm not sure, but I do think it's a larger possibility than people think.

The main case is that it would make me happy.

Beyond that, we know NFL scouts are all about the combine. Rashan is going to burn the combine down with his measurables.

By the way, as far as I know, the only cure for an AC joint separation or sprain is rest and then physical therapy, not surgery.

NFL scouts are already expecting Rashan to test out well at the combine so they're not double counting it as part of their evaluation. The biggest thing that Rashan has to worry is the medical check at the combine where it can make or break his draft stock. They already have a red flag on his shoulder injuries so medical will be huge for Gary. They think that he's still going to get drafted at 1st round unless they found something in the medical check up.

Don’t count on Harrison having a huge impact as a freshman. Rashan played as a freshman, but was not a huge impact player. There is a massive learning curve and physical change from high school to college.

The whole premise of the OP is flawed, and as if said above Gary comes back for this game (I'm sure he will if he's healed), Penn State's Oline is basically made for him to exploit.

Fries is a RS So Bone Fide trouble spot OT, his guard McGovern isn't much better, and the TE on that side has potential but is a true freshman (Freiermuth). Even with double teams, this big-time seeming line is perfect for a health Gary to simply dominate.

Mock drafts don’t matter at this point.

If Gary dominates in the combine, he will go in the first round. The NFL drafts on potential and “the eye test”. His injury just means that he has to dominate the combine, since he doesn’t have gaudy stats to fall back on.

I suspect that Rashan persuasively contradicts this with his play on the field by the end of the year. Perhaps as soon as tomorrow.

Even if he were to shut down for the rest of the year, his best choice is to go.

I think players should almost always enter the league as soon as they can. The real big money in most sports is in the second contract, so to extend their earning potential players should want to get there as soon as possible. Also a lack of film can be helpful as it would be harder to nitpick issues with a player's game and allow GMs to drool over "potential". Also the players can always head back to school after their playing career to pursue a degree.

He's been battling injuries for the last two years. He should go and get his NFL money before the scouts see him as not durable enough for an early round pick. Coming back and getting injured again would be a disaster for him.

He's coming back for Osu & help put us in the playoffs - book it.

He will make plays to seal his legacy ...& put him in first round after this year.

He's resting up & is going to be angry in Columbus.....!!1!1!1!

He’s gonna slip in the draft, there’s always a few players that slip and the experts have going top 10 and slip bad.

I got a feeling he’s going to be late first maybe even early to mid second. Let’s be honest he’s got high draft bust potential, and I don’t see too many teams taking a chance on him early on

Turn on the film man, sorry but it’s not first round material. Workout warriors do just fine in the league right?? Not...

His film isn’t better than taco and he was late 1st. Hype and his combine numbers is what’s going to get him drafted not his actual college football film, which is why he’s a late first round pick at best

Tons of draft boards have him in the top 10, some even in the top 5.  There’s a big difference in a early first and late first draft pick. All the draft busts you hear of are always top 10, they are supposed to be future stars.

If he goes 1-10 which a bunch of experts are predicting, that’s what I’m calling high bust potential, if he’s drafted there. All I’m saying is that I think he’s going to slip to the late first early second, where his true value is. As far as his film, I think he just disappears too much in games, not sure where Winovich  is being evaluated at right now, I’m sure it’s on the rise. But if I need a DE, give me chase in the 2nd/3rd versus rashan anywhere in the 1st

You'd be surprised that scouts have him pegged as a mid 1st rounder, not top 10. He's behind quite a few DL in the draft like Nick Bosa, Ed Oliver, Quinnen Williams, Raekwon Davis, Jeffrey Simmons, Brian Burns. The maybes are Gerald Willis, Jerry Tillery, Clelin Ferrell and Jachai Polite. It's a deep DL class with about 15 DL getting 1st round grades from NFL scouts at this point which is ridiculous.

If he's not back tomorrow he'll ease back in over Rutgers & Indiana and be full speed for The Game and postseason. Plenty of time to prove his potential and with the combine, the time he's missed this season won't matter much to scouts.

It's been nice but he could just as easily get rolled up on or get his knee twisted by some dipshit sparty next year and never get his payday.

He's ready, he should go.

Not gonna happen. He will be a first rounder. Maybe not as high in the first round as his talent merits but still. Why would he come back and risk injury? Whats the upside? Couple more bucks?

If his shoulder is truly a longtime lingering thing, he should be trying to get to his money as soon as he can and nobody should be questioning him for it.
