The Case for Rashan Gary Returning for his Senior Year

Submitted by njvictor on November 2nd, 2018 at 9:21 PM

Is Rashan Gary returning for his senior year a bigger possibility than we think? Rashan Gary has had a pretty uncertain junior year. We know he's an athletic beast, but has been battling injuries almost the entire season and we haven't seen him at his full potential. As of now, a lot of mock drafts don't even have him in the first round anymore after being a top 5 pick prior to the start of the season. While I believe he will still be a first round pick after showing off his athleticism at the combine, some teams will still wonder about how is ability to actually produce. If Gary gets surgery over the summer and comes back healthy for his senior year, I think he has the potential to get back to being a top 5 pick and make a lot more money than he would if he entered the draft this year. Will he do that? I'm not sure, but I do think it's a larger possibility than people think.

If you look at production versus ranking, would he be the most over-rated recruit we’ve had? Don’t get me wrong, I love Rashan. But Chase crushes his numbers in almost every category. I thought Gary would have decimated Woodley’s numbers by now but it’s not even close.

He should absolutely come back.

I agree he would still be a first rounder right now not playing another snap which is why I won’t be surprised if that’s exactly what happens. But hopefully he returns and beasts out down the stretch, against OSU and maybe the playoffs. Either way I still think there’s no way he doesn’t declare.

My bet is that he’s done for the year, heals up and declares... he’s gone to the NFL only to “retire” about 4 years after an injury prone career.

Thanks Rashan for the memories. Great guy, great M athlete and I can’t blame ya.

My bet is that he comes back, smashes people, and declares, only to retire about 14 years into a great NFL career.

Nobody who has gotten to where he has gotten does not love the game, and will pass up playing when he can.  He may sit out the bowl if it isn't a CFP bowl, and I wouldn't blame him.

If he had a clearly surgical AC, he would be post op. And he's not so:

Standard is for 2-3 months rest/rehab/careful reconditioning/resumption of activity with monitoring at each step. He should/would be cleared to play only if symptom free. If his AC definitively fails again during that process, he would undoubtedly undergo surgery, recover, and evaluate the combine draft situation vs return.

He may have had a minor relapse(s) with resumption of activity, putting him in a grey area, or may be gradually progressing, which would be normal. (Current time line and info released are concordant with normal recovery).

The vast majority of non surgical AC injuries fully recover in 2-3 months.

At a minimum, he will be a force at o u, and through the BCS Championship win, riding that glory and performance to a top 5 pick.

Yes.  Every fan base has two thoughts about their best players:

1) player X is awesome, maybe the best ever, should really be in the running for the Heisman

2) same player X should stay in school another year to either get 1) more experience, 2) his degree or 3) both.

A re-injury his senior year would cause a massive drop in his draft stock. It would be awesome if he came back but he is gone and its the best decision for him financially.

I bet he plays a bit against PSU. I doubt he will be used much against Rutgers and IU. I think he will play a lot against OSU, B1G championship game and in the playoffs.

I think he plays a bit tomorrow against PSU, more the following 2 weeks, then he's 100% back for OSU and beyond.  I bet he puts a lot on film the rest of the year and shores up that high 1st round draft spot.  It may be him still getting pressure against double and triple teams rather than sacks...

You cant use decisions made by others in the past to predict what will happen with Gary. While this is true of any player, I think it is more so with Gary. He is a different bird altogether with what I see as entirely unique perspectives and motivations.

I also look at what has happened with Chase returning for his senior year as something that may have a large influence on Garys decision making process.

If Rashan suits up for a couple games he will be a top 15 and maybe top 10 pick.  As many have stated, his measurables will be off the charts. By all accounts, he is a pretty grounded person, we have never heard of a hint of off field nonsense. Rashan WILL be in NFL next year. Rashan WILL be a first round draft pick barring a bad injury. Even if he doesn't suit up and is healthy at combine, he will be a first round pick. Imagine him falling to a late first round team like the Patriots. Whoever drafts Rashan will be getting a 10 year all pro.

He gone.

While injury obviously concerns NFL scouts, they also love them some combine results. And Rashan will own the combine based on his measureables. And that alone often gets players into the first round. He oozes potential. How many first round guys are drafted based on potential? A lot.

I’d obviously be happy if he decided to come back, but I’m assuming he won’t. His choice, his life. Hard to turn down millions of dollars.

Either way, we’ll be okay. Uche and Paye have really stepped up in his absence, and when they slide into possible starting roles next Fall, they’re going to have a ton of experience to go with it, that they otherwise may not have gotten as much of if Rashan was playing now. Got to find silver linings.

OP is busy trying to think for Gary AND NFL guys.

This is why message board guys are message board guys.

Gary coming back would be stupid stupid. Even Peppers took the bowl game off. Bosa is doing the smart thing.

Gary would be risking too much.

When you get a talent like RG3 you want him to play 3 years and go to the NFL. Then replace him with more of the same. You want him peaking his last few games. Hopefully that can happen starting today or next week.

The case for...he is rather ineffective in college for all his measurables and needs to develop technique. The case against...go and get paid now since there could be a lockout in 2 years and players won't be earning anything for s while.
