Can we pump the brakes on this “Cam Marino” story?

Submitted by LostPatrol14 on January 23rd, 2024 at 6:15 AM

I’m not saying Coach Harbaugh isn’t leaving Michigan for the Chargers, but this “writer” is the only one that is really reporting on this strong 2nd interview where “things could be finalized”. This Cam fellow has been in the Atlanta Falcons space quite a bit and has made up quite a bit of information . So much so that even Matt Ryan’s wife had to set this guy straight.   https://www.reddit.com/r/falcons/s/qr3fuFOiVO

He’s a Michigan State grad and his brother goes to Ohio State University. Much of his “breaking stories” are just throwing shit to the wall and seeing what sticks. If it doesn’t come to light, he’ll just shrug it off and move on to the next story.

Again, not saying Coach Harbaugh is staying or going, but this guy isn’t enough for me to believe that this is guaranteed to happen. I’ll just wait until somebody more knowledgeable and reliable to report it.

He’s from the Chicago area, a junior at MSU, and connected to the NFL search business.

It seems he and his “contact” (brother) are ideal contributors to RCMB and 11W.

My idea for the Harbaugh family would be to head over to Disneyland for a day - since I’m sure there wasn’t much free time for the head coach, his lovely wife, and their younger children during the Rose Bowl trip a few weeks ago.

Say hi to Mickey…

If you want to pump the brakes on the story, don't start a new thread on it.  Let the previous one drop down the message board and fade away on its own.

This thread just raised the story to the top of the message board and got people to post on it that otherwise wouldn't have posted on the previous thread.

Don't turn a one day news story into a two day news story.

Like I said on another comment, it’s a reminder to those that any information needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Reminders are needed if people keep posting stories about rumors. There nothing wrong with that. If you don’t need a reminder, then just move along.

Stories will always be posted about rumors, people will always click on those pieces, and that is kind of the point.

Media gives us what we show them we want. When we keep clicking on rumor mill pieces with little to no sourcing, that's what media is going to keep giving us. If we want to stop seeing this kind of content, stop giving it attention.

It's really easy for people to dunk on the media these days, but we are all complicit in the dysfunction.

Calling out the writer of the story is pumping the brakes on it rather than just let info sit out there that many may not know who is behind it throwing the bs out there.  Props for the thread because there will likely be another national writer to put this out there citing this writer's story as a source.  Most would not but in this day and age of media and needing to post something every few hours for clicks, we get the need to answer bad information when needed.

A non-sequitir, but it's not the media's fault that a bunch of venture capitalists decided to fund these broad-reach "citizen journalism" platforms because they were tired of (justified) negative press about their behavior.

It's a clever bit, though, preying on the general gullibility and instant gratification tendencies we have now.

I thought it was a made up name that was a juxtaposition of Cam Newton and Dan Marino. Seems that this is a real person - some 20-ish yo kid from the toney Chicago suburb of Northbrook. Probably is a real sports fan and wants to make his name, but caught up in the whole "throw sh*t against the wall and see what sticks, on which I'll then hang my hat to be legitimize myself" strategem.

Fond memories of those 3 on Super Tecmo Bowl.

Speaking of which, forever grateful that the Lions had a good year when they made that game - running with Rodney Pete and Barry. Robert Clark as a deep threat. Mel Gray on returns! On defense we had Ball, Cofer, Spielman, Blades and Crockett.

Lomas Brown our radio guy was the best Olineman on that team too.

I have a "cool story, bro," Dan Marino edition. During my days as a pastry chef, I went to Maui with a Chicago chef to cook a series of dinners at a hotel. Dan Marino was staying there, and attended one of the dinners. So I can say that I made dessert for Dan Marino. I saw him afterwards as he left the dinner and boy, were his legs mangled looking. Years in the NFL are not kind to the body

This has been discussed in the previous thread.

There is no need for a subsequent thread to give this kid (still at MSU) more attention/credence than we already have.  Best to just move on.

Edit: Or, let's continue with more discussions on how a 20yr old Staee student, who just got done reading a tutorial on "How to Light a Couch on Fire" is not a credible source.

Have at it.

literally some kid who didn't have the academic chops to even get into our school and goes to a petty rival school has to be giggling himself to sleep, along with his ohio brother, that folks got their panties in a wad over his cow manure post.

stay away from the back end.  don't walk in it.  we'll be by later today or tomorrow with the disc and 12-head plow to work that into the soil.

Does Jim Harbaugh really want to coach in a state that was seriously considering a ban on football? Sure, it is a ban for kids under 12, and there are merits to restricting youth football, but would Jim Harbaugh be a proponent on any type of ban on his beloved sport? And does this limit opportunities for his own young son to play football? It can’t be in the family’s best interest to stunt the development of a Harbaugh into a football player.

I'm not sure why people are posting unconfirmed information from single sources to begin with. Just like driving in the winter, don't speed, the brakes won't be a problem.

A baby Sparty managed to yank the collective chain of this board, which is embarrassing, regardless of the actual travel plans of the Harbaugh party. Whoever posted that other thread should be MGoBlog pilloried.

I made the other thread and will gladly take the negs if it means the story turns out to be bunk.

I did at least *try* to vet the source a bit before posting... I verified that the individual was at least someone who was part of the USA Today NFL reporting structure (although I did not look much further beyond that).  Probably should have put a "Rumor" tag on the post, but hindsight affords that kind of enlightenment (I was also at the end of a 20+ hour day).

Either way, happy the rest of the board was able to poke some holes in the story.

I'm not too worried... I've recently made friends with the member of the Nigerian royal family and he's going to let me in on this sweet financial opportunity.  Things will be just fine.

To be honest, you’re one of the posters I like so I hope you don’t see this thread as directed to you.

I was just saying, overall, that this writer wasn’t a great source of news. I just wanted to remind some folks that any and all news, unless vetted by a reputable source, should be taken with a grain of salt. As Harbaugh said “No man knows the future.”. Coach Harbaugh is the only one that knows what he’s going to do. Go Blue CRG!

So if I am to understand this correctly, you're saying a current MSU student and self-described NFL analyst is reporting this information? In that case, I'll be sure to check with my fourth grade, rocket football-playing students/NFL analysts for their takes and get back to everyone.

Alarming news diets are everywhere. Trust people you know from major outlets. Verification on Twitter/X is usually a bad sign.

Insight on JH is going to come from the normal Michigan reporters with inside sources and normal NFL reporters with sources from front offices and agencies like Jeremy Fowler, Schefter etc.

And right now probably the latter because the salient part is what's going on with the Chargers and Falcons.

I couldn't agree with you more 'LostPatrol14'.  That OP from last night was posted using a tweet from a spartie hack wannabe (Cam  "Sham" Marino) and the kid has a long history of practically zero credibility.

There is a life lesson here: the internet provides every idiot with a forum.  Just look at RCMB or 11W and keep that in mind  whatever media sources you happen to consume.

We should take it with a grain of salt, you are right. But other UM pay boards are also reporting Harbaugh is brining "at least his wife and possibly other family members" to the second interview. Whether that means they are ready to finalize or just really damn serious, I do think it means this has gone much further than previous years.

FlexUM

I don't think so. I don't think the boards are using this dude as the source. Balas and some of these other dudes get over their ski's at times but we've got multiple reports that Sarah is absolutely heading out there this week. I don't think that should be odd or a surprise either.

The part I think we take with a grain of salt are these reports that he is the only second interview and basically that they are going there to finalize it. But I do believe Sarah will be on that plane today...
