Bring Hoke Home
I haven't posted a thread here in a very long time..... but I will die on this hill if I'm alone here. Brady Hoke did and can and will continue to do one thing well.... that is scout, recruit, and coach defensive linemen into future pros. We all remember what happened last time Mattison left.... and we all know who coached the DL that season. Let's bring a true dyed in the wool Michigan man home where he belongs in the role that he belongs in...
January 8th, 2019 at 6:34 AM ^
He had one good recruiting class (No I take that back he had a class of 27 players, one QB and 7 offensive lineman, in which one stayed with the program to go with those guys) Dude that might be the one class that set this program back 5 years.
January 8th, 2019 at 7:27 AM ^
But how could the Brady Hoke who's been fired in each of his last four seasons recruit?
They can do much better.
January 8th, 2019 at 9:56 AM ^
Agreed. Also....we don't need to find diamonds in the rough. We need someone who can go get actual high 4-Star and 5-Star guys and then coach them to be at their maximum potential. Let him go dig up longshots for SMU or someone.
January 8th, 2019 at 10:47 AM ^
Hoke recruited and coached arguably the 1st AND 2nd best defensive lines in this football program's history (1997 and 2016).
January 8th, 2019 at 6:25 AM ^
This fanbase sure does love their retreads why don't they bring back Ron English and Terry Malone while they're at it. Jesus people the Michigan way doesn't work get over it.
January 8th, 2019 at 8:34 AM ^
Agreed.
People aren't going to like this but let's fire Harbaugh and bring Yost back, Frankenstein-style. I mean his offenses scored a friggin point a minute and didn't even wear helmets in the early days of his tenure. Also while we're on the subject of resurrection, I'd like to see a good spin-off of Cheers... for personal reasons.
January 8th, 2019 at 9:33 AM ^
I think this is a common thing with fanbases that have a long period of success that originates with one guy. We're constantly harping on the good ole days. This is true in professional sports as well.
January 8th, 2019 at 6:33 AM ^
I don’t think Hoke would come back. Too much damage, heartbreak and burned bridges.
January 8th, 2019 at 8:59 AM ^
Exactly. Why would Hoke come back to work for the guy who replaced him, and why would Harbaugh hire him? From Hoke's perspective it's far too likely to be uncomfortable or humiliating, and from Harbaugh's perspective it's far too likely to be a disaster.
This is like those "Tom Brady should come back and be our coach" threads we see every now and then. Tom Brady has shown no aptitude for or interest in coaching. It's pure wish fulfillment.
January 8th, 2019 at 6:45 AM ^
No. I'd prefer Fritz Crisler's ghost.
January 8th, 2019 at 6:47 AM ^
Thanks, but no thanks.
January 8th, 2019 at 6:53 AM ^
How about no?
January 8th, 2019 at 6:58 AM ^
We've had people ponder bringing him back on the board before, and I still maintain that having Hoke on staff now would be kind of uncomfortable and awkward after the way 2014 in particular went.
January 8th, 2019 at 7:30 AM ^
Exactly for all these reasons and more. Time to move on and get younger coaches not those who are entrenched with antiquated schemes, we have plenty of that still.
January 8th, 2019 at 7:30 AM ^
Agree...it's almost more the way it all went down. If he departed with a firm handshake and moved on that would even be one thing. However, the whole thing just felt awkward, strange, and a host of other words. Granted, in business people get over weird stuff all the time but feels a little too soon. Plus, his career has gotten weird since he left.
January 8th, 2019 at 8:57 AM ^
Uncomfortable? Honestly, if Hoke came into Harbaugh's office to interview for the job, I don't know how Jim doesn't circle around his desk, smack Brady in the head and ask him, "what the fuck were you doing?"
Harbaugh has spent the past 4 seasons rebuilding Michigan from a smoldering wreckage into arguably the 2nd best program in the conference and now we'd bring the architect of that wreckage back into the fold? Yeah, no.
The only Carr-era coach I'd accept being on the current staff is walking out the door to be the DC at Ohio State, so let's just leave it at that.
January 8th, 2019 at 7:10 AM ^
Please God No.
January 8th, 2019 at 7:24 AM ^
Nah.
January 8th, 2019 at 7:26 AM ^
Bring Jerry Montgomery back. Packers are overhauling their staff. This would be a huge upgrade.
January 8th, 2019 at 8:37 AM ^
I remember when we lost him to Oklahoma, wondered where he had ended up.
From Wikipedia - In January 2018, Montgomery was hired as the assistant head coach and defensive line coach at Texas A&M. Later in January 2018, Montgomery instead opted to remain with the Packers as the defensive line coach.
He sure does move around alot.
January 8th, 2019 at 9:42 AM ^
I like the idea of Montgomery coming back. He did a great job with the DL and was a fantastic recruiter. I would be concerned about his longevity. He is obviously wanting more than just being a positions coach but I guess there could be an opportunity for him to take on more when/if Don Brown leaves. Also, there is obviously something to young up and comers. I couldn't name a single coach from Clemson except their DC, but almost every guy I saw on TV last night looked like they could not be older than 35yrs old. These high school kids need to relate to these coaches. They were jumping around on the sideline more than the kids last night when a great play happened. Harbaugh needs to continue bringing in these young under the radar guys and begin mentoring them.
January 8th, 2019 at 7:34 AM ^
He's been fired everywhere since Michigan. The program is where it is today because of him. No way that EVER happens. Mark my words... HOKE WILL NEVER BE ON STAFF AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN EVER AGAIN, NOT EVEN AS A LUNCH LADY. people clamoring for him are completely clueless.
January 8th, 2019 at 9:49 AM ^
There's only one position that he might be hired for - carrying the wire for Coach Harbaugh's headset.
January 8th, 2019 at 7:37 AM ^
I agree - Bring Hoke Home. Ball State needs a special teams coach - perfect place for him.
January 8th, 2019 at 7:39 AM ^
You have to be kidding! Why not bring DJ Durkin back at the same time???
January 8th, 2019 at 7:42 AM ^
Hard pass.
January 8th, 2019 at 7:45 AM ^
I don't think its a good idea. Whatever magic he had when he was the DL coach here before is obviously long gone.
January 8th, 2019 at 7:52 AM ^
Asking Hoke back is like asking your ex-girlfriend for a threesome with your new girl; won’t happen and even if it does 90% of the outcomes are bad.
But the 10% could be so sweet. Let’s do it. C’mon Brady I’ll make you crawl on your knees....
January 8th, 2019 at 9:17 AM ^
uhhh depends on which ex-girlfriend you are talking about
January 8th, 2019 at 8:07 AM ^
I commented hoke as a joke in a previous thread as a joke, I want nothing to do with that. He is a great man but no thank you
January 8th, 2019 at 8:09 AM ^
in a word..."no" (to Hoke)
January 8th, 2019 at 8:12 AM ^
This will never happen and you shouldn’t want it to happen.
January 8th, 2019 at 8:20 AM ^
Let's not.
January 8th, 2019 at 8:28 AM ^
Even if it were a good idea, it won't happen, but it's not a good idea, and it's silly to talk about.
January 8th, 2019 at 8:34 AM ^
Brady Hoke can and did and will continue to do one thing well.... that is scout, recruit, and coach defensive linemen into future pros.
That's three things. Just sayin'
January 8th, 2019 at 8:35 AM ^
No, thanks. Lets move forward, not back.
January 8th, 2019 at 8:36 AM ^
Has is it ever happened at any school that a former HC has returned only as an assistant? Real question, no snark.
January 8th, 2019 at 8:39 AM ^
Im ok with that
January 8th, 2019 at 8:40 AM ^
Hoke inherited those players, and they had already been molded when he officially had the DLine title. I really think Hoke got lucky at ball state as well.
January 8th, 2019 at 8:46 AM ^
For the love of God...NO! Brady Hoke is the past. The distant past. Look forward. Find a dynamic young DL coach (Al Washington?) and let him do his thing.
January 8th, 2019 at 8:54 AM ^
Hey OP, stop posting and go watch some basketball.
January 8th, 2019 at 8:58 AM ^
Couldn't disagree more. We need fresh, creative coaching minds out there, not the predictable, bag of mediocrity that follows Hoke around wherever he goes. Further, if I never hear "WELLLLL....." again the rest of my life that will be great.
January 8th, 2019 at 9:16 AM ^
He's from Dayton. Maybe U Cincy will have something for him.
January 8th, 2019 at 9:16 AM ^
Why can't this program bring in New Blood in the form of innovative young coaches who will stay???
Instead, people bring up these aging relic retreads.
January 8th, 2019 at 9:23 AM ^
No. Why the fuck are Michigan fans obsessed with hiring their old employees? Cultural nepotism?
January 8th, 2019 at 9:27 AM ^
I do not think this could be made to work even a little. Too much history there. If he'd never been our HC sure, but this isn't a realistic idea.
January 8th, 2019 at 9:28 AM ^
We need forward thinking, we don't need to bring back the crap that didn't work.
January 8th, 2019 at 9:35 AM ^
If Hoke had not been the head coach at Michigan and if it had not failed miserably, I would probably be on board. It usually never works bringing someone bad with a lesser role than they had before and getting them to buy in to the new regime. He also has not succeeded at anything post HC position at Michigan. I love Hoke, but I would prefer we find someone else.
