Brett McMurphy: Michigan-South Carolina in Outback

Submitted by jerseyblue on

Brett McMurphy says he's been told Michigan is a lock to play in the Outback Bowl and that he expects them to play South Carolina.

This is one person's projection (among many), he also has Iowa over NW in the Holiday Bowl (which no one has projected).    I still think the Big Ten will send Michigan out to the Holiday Bowl, having not been out west since 2007.

First of all, we played in Arizona in 2013. Second of all, bowl games only care about money and the conference only cares about TV ratings... ask yourself honestly whether Northwestern is really more appealing than Iowa. One is a small private school that honestly doesn't have anything resembling a sports culture and the other is a major state flagship university

because the agreement is for them to get five different teams in six years and we were there two years ago.

For the same reason, NW and Iowa can't be in the Outback, which is why we pretty much have to be there, unless they preferred Purdue for some reason.

Looking at the B1G standings is pretty amazing this year.  There is only one 7-5 team (Iowa) and one 6-6 team (Purdue).

Thin middle class in the conference this year.

I like this matchup. I think we would win, and a win over any SEC team always impresses the media. Finish out 9-4. Get some good vibes heading into the off season. Sign me up!

This is a good matchup for us.

A very winnable game and one that helps gets us to 9-4 and some positive momentum going into the offseason.

Stanford and Washington are harder matchups and probably a step above South Carolina overall.

It would be great to get revenge on that last game in 2013 as well.   We had like 2-3 chances to end the game on last last drive.

It would have been hilarious for them to celebrate the Clowney hit and then have to mention it occurred in a loss, but we let them off the hook.

This team we blow them out.

Not a sexy bowl or opponent, but let's look at this in a positive light. We have a chance to beat an SEC team that finished 2nd in its division and finish with a 9-4 record. We get to unleash our D on a Muschamp offense, one that won't be able to throw all over our Safeties like Washington or WSU. After watching a few USCe games this year, I expect a result similar to our bowl game against Florida in Harbaugh's first year. Their offense is incredibad, and their defense is pretty "Meh." This is the kind of game you want Peter's finishing the season with.

Difference is that MSU has a top 10 defense while USCe doesn't crack the top 50 (depending on which rankings are observed) Michigan outgained MSU and even had more 1st downs and a greater time of possession, but the 5 turnovers nullified all offensive production. And again, that was against a top 10 defense.

He will after our OL misses another stunt and allows somebody to piledrive Peters into the turf.

I've seen Michigan lose 24 bowl games since Jan. 1, 1970—which is the most bowl losses of any program in the country in that time—and I can assure you that the vast majority of Michigan fans were absolutely convinced we were going to win each and every one of those games we lost, for all kinds of optimistic reasons. Many of those losses were to teams ranked under us, so any time Michigan fans start crowing in advance about how the team we're going to play can't match up with us, my Michigan Fan Overconfidence Radar goes off.

The only college football program with as many bowl losses as Michigan with a worse overall bowl winning percentage is Arkansas. Considering how highly rated Michigan has typically been since 1970, our bowl performance has been ass.
