Board Poll: Michigan Football Schedule

Submitted by UNCWolverine on August 12th, 2022 at 11:00 AM

Which first 4 Michigan games would you prefer to see next month?

A: Hawaii, Connecticut, Colorado State, Maryland.

B: Hawaii, @ Texas, Colorado State, Maryland.

There is no wrong answer, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Just curious what this community thinks. I'll give my opinion below.

Option A this year because we are breaking in a new OC, new DC, DL is different. Next year, if we retain most the players and all coaches, I would prefer Option B.

I'm going with Option B. Kicking your ass, and collecting $200.

Oh, we're not reciting My Cousin Vinny lines? Ehh fine okay.

I think for me, it depends on the year. This year, I'd love option B. If this was a year that we were breaking in an entirely brand new QB, never played any meaningful snaps, etc., then I'd probably prefer option A to give him time to gel with the offense against teams that he should have little to no trouble against. But you give me a seasoned, gritty, proven vet like McNamara to go along with a clearly rising star in McCarthy, coupled with possibly the best offense Michigan will have ever had, and I say bring it on, Texas.

B - all day long.  That is what college football is all about.  Non-conf marquee matchups are great for the sport.  It would also help better prepare the team for B1G play.  I could give anywhere from zero to two shits about the UConn game.

Times have changed. Scheduling 1 good out of conference game has zero benefit. With UCLA and USC joining the big ten, there is enough good teams to fill your schedule up. Give me two cupcakes then the rest big ten games.

It comes down to how confident you are of a win over Texas.  If we were to lose that game, it would suck, period.  3-1 is never better than 4-0.

I think we’d beat them, so I’d vote for it.

I am about great non-conference games but the playoff is not set up for teams who have to play OSU the final game of the season. With that in mind, until the team is making an expanded playoff with 1-2 losses, i am fine with them not playing Texas on the road.

I do understand that is coming. Hopefully we continue our upward momentum through that point.

Play the good teams, play them home and away, do it every year. I personally think we should have someone our schedule to replace ND and then one other real P5 team. We play Rutgers and a bunch of other “have nots” in the league. Make it fun let’s see some good helmet games and test our metal.

B - Austin is about 2 hours away, so I don't think I'm close enough to curse it from sheer proximity. All other curses would still be in full force, so I would just watch it on BTN in 60 if the outcome were worth it..

Until the playoff is expanded to 12 or more teams it just doesn't make sense to schedule a good OOC game.  It cost OSU the playoffs last year and rewarded Cincinnati for having an easy schedule.

My preference is that we schedule easy games and realize the non conference games are essentially practice games to get ready for the Big 10 Schedule.

All Cincinnati played was Notre Dame and Indiana. As long as they get in with that then Michigan is just fine with OSU as long as they win. Plus most years you can expect half of Michigan’s schedule to be better than Cincinnati’s best games. So as long as teams like Cincinnati can get in on 1-2 possibly tough games then Michigan should aim to make their schedule as easy as possible.

It seems to me Clemson feasted on this model. Always felt like they were playing their best football at the end of the season when their only tough opponents were on the schedule.

B. I’m a fan so get me the best games possible for my viewing pleasure. Plus Texas isn’t that great and a win against them(how artificial it might be early)would give the team some momentum and juice going into Iowa a few weeks later.

Some discussion on weakness of non-conference schedule.  This year appears weak.  But recent history belies the theory:

2021 - Washington

2019 - ND

2018 - ND

2017 - Florida

2016 - UCF (maybe a stretch)

2015 - Utah

With only 3 non-conf games,  this seems like a fair balance.

I like the idea of a top 25 potential team or brand on the schedule.  Especially game 3, as a test.

My original reply was “B”.  But, I have a question that reflects an aspect of this.

if the B1G conference champion was an “auto bid” into the CFP, would your answer change?

We are pretty close to that, hence my answer being A. Certainly not guaranteed, but most likely, Michigan must beat a highly ranked OSU team and very likely a highly ranked PSU, MSU, or both. Coming off 11-2 if MSU starts 5-0 you can bet they will be ranked pretty high and get the benefit of the doubt in the polls much of this year.

If the conference champ is auto CFP, the answer is B. Even if you drop a non conference game, it doesn’t matter as long as you win the conference. Theoretically you could be 8-1 in the conference and 2-1 in the non conference if there was auto CFP for the conference champ. So a 10-2 regular season, plus 1 conference championship game 11-2 team could be in the CFP

I am personally fine with the schedule we have this year so I prefer to keep it as it is. I cannot remember us ever being the team with the easy OOC schedule so it is nice to have that luxury this year. Get some wins early under our belt and start the train rolling all the way into Columbus.

A. All day.

there is no reason to play a team with a pulse. As long as SEC teams schedule Wofford Michigan does not need to play Texas. Plus I want every single game to be a blowout win for Michigan. The first four games might let me indulge that need before the competition picks up.

Choice 'B' all the way.  Michigan needs steel to sharpen steel, plus that's a road trip I and numerous others on the MGoBoard would love to take.

I don't live in MI, so B for me. More home games with cheap tickets is good for families with kids who are just becoming fans, though.
