We don’t know if the same position was available for him at UM. Rumblings are that Harbaugh wanted him to retire or downgrade to an analyst role.

And even if not I would never begrudge a person for taking a better opportunity.

Funny how other programs want our defensive coaches but none are touching our offensive coaches. Wonder why lol.

Why?

I mean, sure, if you only have 5 minutes to screen candidates, and you're only allowed to look at the box score, it would be puzzling.  But since Day is allowed to spend a great deal of time and resources on his evaluation, why would it be at all puzzling that he would decide a position coach has done a great job of teaching that position and recruiting, but other factors (such as poor scheme, injuries, players sitting out, lack of motivation, etc.) prevented the defense as a whole from performing at an elite level in the final 2 games of the year.

I mean, that's not even a particularly nuanced take on it.  I would expect that to be completely obvious as a legitimate possibility to, oh, everyone that reads this blog at the very least.

I got it!

1) Harbaugh to NFL

2) Brown to another college

3) Pep to Michigan HC

4) Warriner to OC

5) Zordich to DC

6) Hoke to cheerleader

Depending on if Washington wants to go to OSU it might be tough for Michigan to keep him. They can't give him that big of a raise or promotion without fucking over Partridge and Zordich. So is Washington worth more than Partridge and Zordich? If he is willing to leave for a lateral move it is what is.

And what is sucks.

This will come down to how much Harbaugh wants Washington.

We have the same money cannon that they do, Don Brown knows Washington as much/ more than Day and Michigan can offer Washington DL or LBs. The question is, does Harbaugh want/ value Washington?

andrewgr

Washington could very well be motivated by things other than money; in fact, the majority of professionals are motiviated by other factors, such as location, work/life balance, recognition, growth opportunities, etc.  The #1 motivator in my industry is getting along with and respecting your manager.

I have no idea what motivates Washington, but I don't believe that it's as simple as how much Harbaugh wants him.

Not the he needed it but Harbaugh certainly has some incentive to score some points now against OSU.   Getting Mattison fired would be on my goal list.

I would suggest the optics are a job of the AD office and to not negotiate the contracts as soon as you recognize the importance of a coach is a fail. Partridge was the same last year. Reaction to another programs move instead of dictating your own is a fail. I’m not suggesting that I know anything more than the threat. Contracts expire January 10. To leave this all to now is a mistake and Warde is culpable.

ak47

Lol warde isn’t culpable. You think harbaugh is consulting warde on coaching decisions or contracts? Harbaugh has 100 percent complete control of the coaching staff. If Michigan is getting outbid for a coach because of budget concerns that’s a warde problem but that isn’t the case

JamieH

The only reason to outbid OSU to keep Washington is if Brown is leaving and you want Washington to be the DC.  Or if you want Washington to be DC soon.   And I don't know that you can call him DC material yet, at least for Michigan.

I'm sure Washington is a good coach, but if he wants to leave Brown and go coach at Ohio State, then, unless this is all about money, I'm not sure what you do about it.

A few hours ago, I heard that the Al Washington talk had died down.

I am so confused at the moment. I mean, when I got back from some meetings, I see the Mattison news and was saying, "WHAAA?" loudly at my cubicle. What a day indeed in Michigan fandom.

Ryan Day and Co are pulling some serious Sun Tzu Art of War shit on us. The key to defeating your enemy is not to do it on the field, but before you meet your enemy on the field. What better way than to shake up our coaching ranks and to an extent our 2020 recruiting efforts.

All I have to say is "Thank God' we signed our 2019 commits during the early signing period.

Not only has OSU beaten us up on the playground in front of the whole school, it's now taken our lunch money and pulled our pants down around our ankles.

I will never again breathe even the tiniest bit of criticism of players who decommit before signing day, or transfer from the team.

I am serious, Don.  Your comments here, below, and elsewhere make you look negged out maybe it's time YOU turn the lights out on your Michigan fandom as it CLEARLY makes you miserable.

So Michigan lost a couple of assistant coaches, so the fuck what.  There are more where that came from.  Get a grip.

Don

It's beyond comical that you—who is always quick to immediately jump on anybody who breathes a word of criticism of Michigan—is somehow unable to understand a Michigan fan's disappointment at a coach leaving the program for our biggest rival.

In case you haven't noticed, I have not criticized either Harbaugh, Manuel, or the players for Mattison's decision. Unless we find out more information, that decision is totally on him. I am not criticizing Michigan for this.

And as a Michigan student who was in the stadium to see Billy Taylor go over right end while Woody went apeshit, and was in the stadium to see the 10-10 tie, and who was in the stadium to see Corny Greene snatch victory for the Buckeyes late in the 4th quarter in 1975, I come by my hatred of Ohio State naturally. I was born with a disdain of Woody Hayes courtesy of my father, and my hatred for the Buckeyes matured through all those losses in the '70s in a way that you're apparently too goddamn young to remotely comprehend. So you can stick your assumption that you get to determine who's a real Michigan fan and who isn't up your ass.

The only problem I have with what you said, Don, is that it elevates Mattison's move into something to emulate.

I hope that's not the case. The more I think about it, the less I like it. He could have gone to literally ANY other school, even MSU.

He's either:

-Motivated solely by self-interest and simply doesn't care about UM, his (now former) players, or anyone who supports Michigan football - a terrible trait for a college football coach IMO - or

He's being intentionally vindictive toward JH/UM.

I think the NFL-like money-rules-all motivation in CFB today sets a very poor example for kids.

"I think the NFL-like money-rules-all motivation in CFB today sets a very poor example for kids."

Which is precisely why I said I won't criticize players any more—their goddamn coaches are completely free to bail at the first opportunity.

And considering all the talk from Mattison I've heard over the years about how much he loves Michigan, to go directly to our biggest and most hated rival is incomprehensible to me. I can't believe that he's paid so poorly at Michigan that he's in financial straits.

But like you said—money rules all, at least for some people.

I just hope this isn't indicative of some deeper, more serious fissures within the program—that would be worse than simply losing one coach. We had enough of that from 2008 to 2014.
