Biggest Homer Announcer

Submitted by Bo Harbaugh on October 8th, 2022 at 10:35 PM

Watched football all day today, flipping through many games like most of you I'm sure (after the UM game of course).

I generally enjoy Klatt and Gus (Klatt is knowledgable and not really a homer for any team and Gus has great enthusiasm when calling games - which is sweet when UM has big plays and is winning (OSU 2021), obviously sucks if we're losing (MSU 2021))

Anyway, is it just me, or has Kirk - who used to be a pretty solid and knowledgable announcer gone full OSU homer.  I get they were destroying MSU, but that's the shittiest secondary in the league.  Herbstreit has gone from a credible announcer to a full on OSU slappy, Ryan Day ball licker.  Today was the worst I've seen it, to where even Fowler was getting in on the action.

That said, Danielson has now jumped the shark as well imo.  He used to be an SEC slappy, always politicking for the league, but in fairness that league has won like 19 of the last 20 national titles or something crazy like that. But now, he's gone full Finebaum with the Bama/Saban cock gobbling.  Watching the game rn and he is just full on shill mode for Bama.  I haven't ever seen him this bad ever, not for UGA last year or LSU in their championship year.

Maybe I'm just catching a bad day of announcing.

What say you?

Yeah, he's bad. It's like watching the game with some slappy, because that's what's happening. Every call is "good" if it's in OSUs favor and "tough" if it isn't.  I didn't have any stakes in the game, but I had to turn it off.

Herbie was fine. His job is to maintain viewership.  The only people watching that game were OSU fans.  Plus,  He's got to push Stroud Heisman.  It's good for tv.

Thought he was funny openly mocking MSU fans for how empty the stadium was.

Danielson has been horrible for years.  Every play /player is the greatest thing ever in the SEC.

Will be interesting when CBS losing SEC

Stroud appears to be another amazing college QB who will likely struggle at the NFL level because all he knows is throwing to wide open receivers each and every game. And with regards to the Heisman, he will probably win it because of his stats and team performance but there really needs to be a renewed focus on awarding it to the BEST player regardless of circumstance. DTR and Hendon Hooker are doing just as much with much less talent around them.

I thought Haskins had a chance to break the OSU QB curse in the NFL. Then I was certain Fields would. Now Stroud, I’m not sure even though he’s the most talented of the 3.

Fields blinded me by his amazing deep balls he threw. But turns out it doesn’t take much to hit one of 4 1st round receivers on your roster running go routes with 5 seconds of protection

I haven’t cared for Herbstreit ever but especially when he tried to be the first to break the news about Les Miles to Michigan which ended up backfiring on him. Klatt actually just seems to be an overall B1G promoter so I appreciate that. One thing I am realizing is how many people are slobbering over OSU right now. There is no doubt they are always going to be an elite team but they have a vast amount of injuries going on right now. I get a feeling it is shaping up to being an OSU team that thinks last year was a fluke and they are just going to roll over everyone including us in the B1G which to be honest is exactly where I want their mindframe. Their D is playing better this year, but this is still not a very tough OSU team. I guess time will tell but I hope they continue to downplay the reality of what happened last year which was the better and more physical team won.

It's not you Bo.  For me, listening to Herbie do OSU games is like listening to someone scratching a chalk board.   Incessant and gratuitous OSU propaganda.  Mute button often employed in his OSU broadcasts.

Funny because a similar thread on the Sparty board is swearing up and down the Klatt and Gus are scUM slappies. I guess everyone is seeking their own echo chamber.

Fox Big Noon has been at a UM game for like 4? Weeks in a row.  Add in penny st and MSU games and Fox Is totally repping us.  Love it for us, part of it is that the B1G generally sucks and is not compelling and UM can still bring in the ratings, and ABC/ESPN is picking up the other most relevant team in the conference, OSU.

At some point, Klatt and Gus will basically sound like UM slappies given they do our game every week.

I didn’t notice Herbie being a homer. He is generally pretty fair.  I wasn’t sure if it was the lopsidedness of the game or being tired from a long day for him but he came across very out of it.

Nobody topped Danielson in the 2010s. However, Herbie now is just an OSU fellatio machine. An OSU game with Herbie is now a full-on, 4 hour recruiting pitch. Really. He used to be pretty good at hiding his biases but he just doesn't even try anymore and that started about 5 years back.

Multiple times he has outright said that recruits would be crazy not to go there, gone on and on about how good recruits will be developed under Day (he said this about QBs which makes it funny when WR is the position to go with there), etc.

I get that he has a bias and why! I understand it totally but you have to know when and how to let that out in his position. He used to be decent at that and just stopped even trying.

Klatt is easily my favorite at the moment because he will tell you how it is. Always right? No, but most often. When he gives praise it's deserved and when he critiques or questions it's usually deserved. He will praise while not outright appearing to be a part of that program's recruiting arm.

My problem with Gus is that I don’t think he sees very well. He’ll call first down when the ball is a yard or two short. And he anticipates the outcome of a play before it happens, like today he said our FG was good before realizing it had been blocked. I don’t think he adds anything that I can’t already see for myself.

It seems Gus and Joel can’t see shit the past few games. Sometimes I wonder if they are looking down at the field. Like do they not see signals the refs make or flags thrown? They seem surprised by things I can see from my living room. And they have their own monitors. It’s been an odd few weeks for them.

Nobody likes any of the announcers since Keith Jackson.  They aren't Homers for any side. Just be happy we aren't the 4th game on the slate with Beth mowins

I watched much of the OSU-MSU game and from hearing the commentary, I am pretty sure that the top 10 vote getters in the Heisman voting this year will be from Ohio State.

Herbstreit seems to be a good guy; he really watches after Corso on GameDay.

And he mostly knows his football.   His biggest problem is he can’t shut up.   Feels like this is an issue across this generation of announcers.   Sometimes just let the viewers take in the game.   But he is one of the worst.

And yesterdays game definitely devolved into an OSU love fest.   Wasn’t worth watching anyway so easy to flip to something better.

Is he being a homer, or is he just pointing out what everyone already knows in that OSU is a really, really good team?

I don’t think we know yet how good their defense is. MSU nearly got shut out by Minnesota a few weeks ago, so letting them score 20 is nothing to write home about. But their offense….JFC. Far and away the best and certainly most talented in the country. Georgia might be the only team that can reasonably expect to slow them down.

They are great and maybe the announcers just ran out of things to talk about...

but Herbie bringing up future uncommitted recruits still in high school and one even in middle school that are OSU leans is a bit much for a national broadcaster imo.

That's where he jumped the shark and went from announcer to program booster.

Something I’d ask you guys to think of, is that this might be Herbie’s last season calling OSU games with the new B1G TV contract. He made a living going out of his way to not be a homer and I think this year he’s really come to terms with knowing he’s not going to be able to be there and watch his alma mater any more. Having said that you all are pretty spot on. He hasn’t been hiding it this year, and Danielson is THE WORST.

As long as the analysis and opinions re officiating etc are objective, I don’t have an issue with former players being somewhat obvious about their love for their schools.   The love and loyalties are part of what makes college football and college athletics great.   And Herbstreit is generally pretty objective.

Again my biggest issue is he (and many others today) feel the need to fill every second of airtime with nonstop commentary.  This isn’t radio.

Herbstreit and Fowler talked about this after the Wisconsin on Fowler’s Nightcap Recap.  They were lamenting about it likely being their last game in the OSU booth (and other B1G schools).  Fowler also mentioned that they were hoping to make it to Ann Arbor one more time.  So maybe they think they’ll be getting the MSU game.

I’m a Herbstreit fan.  As long as he’s not calling The Game, he’s one of my favorites.  And the way he looks after Corso makes me respect him even more.

To be fair, any former player is going to have a hard time being objective. Imagine trying to announce an OSU game and not take some shots. It can bleed through totally unconsciously too. And we weren’t players! (Most of us that is).

I miss Keith and Bob show. Nothing could quite match that combo, and Bob wasn't acting like a homer when calling games that his son was playing in. (Keith and Frank Broyles was pretty good too).

I watched most of the game and didn't think Herbie was being too homerish. He was very complimentary towards MSUs Reed, who is the one guy that scares me on Oct 29. MSU scored one real TD and looked so bad (again) vs. the pass that there isn't much you can say but that the Buckeyes are 100X better team. I did like seeing the graphic how much Knowles has helped their D. That will mean we'll need a great gameplan and execution. Didn't realize just how much better they were on D until seeing those numbers. And if they try using the "revenge" factor about being called finesse (soft), tell them to talk to the guy at Miami whose team can't run the ball.

Yes and it is ridiculous. Can't listen to CBS coverage anymore. Danielson even rubbed off on Brad nessler and turned him into a hack as well. Herbstreit has always been a hack. Joey Galloway is another hack. Hopefully they'll take note of some of these young up and coming Big Ten Network guys like Jake Butt and Joshua Perry and get those guys a full-time gig. They are very good.

ESPN, especially with Fowler and Herbie calling the games, is straight OSU propaganda. Yes, they could very well beat us this year and challenge for a title. They look like the same team they were. If you have a weakness in the secondary with no pressure, you're fucked. Will be interesting to see how they look vs Iowa. Yes, they'll win, but do they score under 30? I think Michigan still has room to grow and I'm not sure anything has changed for the Bucks if and when they get dragged into a street fight.
