Best thing you saw: Week 4

Submitted by mi93 on

If you just saw the score of the Michigan game, you'd think, 'hmm, about what I expected' but it was anything but in many respects.  Elsewhere, Ferentz out-Franklin'd Franklin, and Bert out-Sumlin'd Sumlin.  How Kirk and Bert biffed their games with late leads was stunning.  Florida keeps making the win look better, but Georgia is rounding into the class of the SEC East. Big 12 gonna Big 12 - so much for the fighting Pickens.

With that the best of what I saw...

Non-Michigan: Sparty got throttled - though they really Plax'd themselves in the 2nd in what became 14pt swing when it was still a game.  But...the end of the PSU-Iowa game was max entertainment and the best thing I saw.

Michigan: John.  Emer.  Effing.  O'Korn.

I'm still disgusted by the hit that knocked out Speight - it seemed dirty, and the fact it didn't get a flag also chaps my arse.  Coupled with 2 targeting calls, it seemed to be a theme for them on the day.  Regardless, it sure seemed like after the OL got their starting QB maimed, they played a bit more inspired the rest of the game - certainly the blitz pick-ups improved.  I pray Speight will be fine and thank my lucky Harbaughs the back-up was ready to go and performed at that level.

What you got?

Gotta feel happy for the guy. It's like he came out of nowhere, played like a champ. Also encouraged by the play of Gentry. He looks to be the real deal as far as a TE threat out there. Great to see him succeed after changing positions a while ago.

1. UM defense. A total of 10 second half yards for Purdue? That’s incredible. 2. Tight end usage. 3. Passes from the UM QB that hit receivers in stride, not high or behind them.

Honestly, it woudln't bother me at all if teams continue to do that. Throwing back against your body on a rollout is a great way to sail a pass directly to a safety.

Those plays seemed rife with uncalled holding to me.  Then again, it seems Michigan's opponents never get called for offensive holding.  (Purdue got the obvious defense holding call -- complete with fans whining about the pass being uncatchable, despite that rule only applying to pass interference -- and Michigan got the holding call that backed them up inside the 10 in the third quarter; that's it).

FSU dropping to 0-2 is interesting

Bielema is getting really really fat

Penn St is more physical than I thought.  Barkley is the best player in the country

Sparty getting lit up although they can celebrate the box score which looks favorable for them

JOK was ballin' yesterday

Devin Bush continues to wreak havoc

Gentry looking like a star in the making

I was getting texts from family and friends about how bad we looked the first half.  I said that is why they play 4 quarters.  And after 4 quarters, we had beat their ass.  That gimmicky offense is just not sustainable over 4 quarters against a great defense.

Gentry is Gronk. Yep, I'm going that far and drinking all the koolaid.

O'Korn showed us why we were excited for him to transfer in two years ago.

UM defense is really something to behold. It may be on par with Clemson and Bama defenses.

Don Brown's adjustments in game. Truly spectacular if Purdue only got one touchdown and only 10 yards in the 2nd half.

Devin Bush is remarkable. I predict he will finish as one of (if not the best) Michigan linebacker in school history. He is wracking up defensive stats like he's in a video game. He often looks like he's in video game speed. He is a missile with dreads!

Outside games:
Hate to say it, but PSU really impressed with the last play win. Poise by Mcsorely and they seem to know how to move the ball. I'm actually excited to see how they stalk up against UM since they have s strong passing attack and Barkley.

Ok St was shown for what they are: gaudy numbers against weaker opponents who play no D. TCU looks like a well balanced team who might make life difficult for Oklahoma.

Georgia looked like a monster after the talk about Miss St being a real contender to take down Bama. The parody in the SEC (excluding Bama) is just further evidence that the conference is not the "meat grinder" it once was, but is rather some fairly mediocre teams who can exploit one another. Purdue demolished Missouri....

Both offense and defense had their moments of doubt, both responded: - Defense: Purdue zooms down the field after a laborious UM scoring drive. Defense tinkers with some linebacker/safety alignments and CRUSHES Purdue the rest of the way. - Offense: Leader of the offense gets hurt after a listless 1st quarter. All parts of the offense respond to the replacement, squeeze life out of Purdue for the rest of the game. I hope the bye week helps JOK get through his reads a little faster, the offensive line is going to be a work in progress all year. Iowa/PSU was special - Iowa rises up again and again and holds PSU to 15 points until the last play of the game. What a scene in Iowa City!

From our game, the best thing was John O'Korn being overall a pleasant surprise. I was sitting here after Speight was injured thinking "FUUUUUUUU" for a moment, and then mere minutes later loving that we have the fortune of an experienced backup.

Non-Michigan Big Ten - Saquon Barkley was on another level on that last drive of the PSU-Iowa game. That made for some of the most entertaining football last night.

Outside the conference, Florida State coming out uninspired and flat against NC State was probably one of the few highlights of the noon slate. So many wasted opportunities and drives obliterated by stupidity on the part of Fisher's team. That had to be a fun locker room after that game...not.

3rd down conversions. Particularly 3rd & 6 when we're down 7-10. Of course big props to O'Korn for keeping his feet and extending but how about Perry not giving up on the play and reversing his crossing route to give his qb an outlet? Awesome team play and probably THE pivotal point in the game. Also a play or two later was a big gainer for McKeon who was clutch all day. I hope Eubanks is ok from the targeting hit but we've got a bunch of crazy good tight ends. Good to see them get more targets.

yesterday at Purdue leaving no doubt who the better team and staff was, and Chris Evans 10 yd td run through a very wide hole that allowed him to go in untouched for some red zone magic, and O'Korns clutch performance.

Michigan: JOK hitting our TEs!

Non Michigan: Barkley is a beast. Poweful runner who also has amazing lateral quickness. I hate PSU, but I enjoy watching that guy run.

BTW..Did anyone else notice that the refs missed a Barkey fair catch on a kick off in the second half after Iowa scored? Barkley waived his arm at the 1 and caught it.

JOK coming in cold, crapping on his first drive, then settling down into a really good game!  I didn't see that performance coming, but the coaches helped him out like they hadn't helped Speight - they closed off a lot of the playbook and went with better, easier play calls.  Not sure why Speight wasn't given the same calls - the misdirection, the quick outs, the crossing patterns in the middle, a couple of screens.  Speight had to stand in the pocket waiting for complicated patterns, and deep stuff, to open up on 3rd downs.  1st and 2nd downs were inside runs against a waiting defense to set up a 3rd and long.  That was Speight's 1st qtr...  That said, I hope Speight is okay, and we'll see if he lost his job - all indications sure point to it right now!

The defense stepping up after the TD drive was just plain impressive.  Bush will work his way into Heisman talk next year if he keeps this up!  The matchup with Barkley should be fun.  UM is a couple of steps faster than Iowa across the board - unless PSU is successful in isolating Barkley on McCray alone, you can cut out 2/3 of his yards.  He won't get the corner so easily against UM, and going up the middle is a non-starter.

Non-UM division: TCU beating the crap out of OK St.  All the talk coming out of Oklahoma, from both teams, is wearing thin.  TCU just came in and beat them.  I didn't think TCU's offense was that good, but I guess anyone can score when there's no defense against them...

The other cool thing was the other talkative teams going down: Purdue, Miss St, and Vandy.  Open your mouths like your college royalty, and the royalty will beat you down.

still getting a very effective pass rush all through the 4th quarter.  As they have all season.  That's what we need to hold leads and win us the tough games.  Just ask Iowa.

Unfortunately, Saquan Barkley was fantastic last night. I just pretended he didn't play for State Penn and enjoyed his performance. He's the next great NFL back

Michigan:

- An offense, plain and simple. When we had a consistent pass game going, it opened up the run offense as well and really showed what our offense is capable of.

- Beyond that, John O'Korn's pocket presence - whoa boy. His ability to avoid the pressure and not let it get to his head while still delivering strikes to his receivers is excellent and something we need during this year of offensive rebuild. I like that ability a lot.

Non-Michigan:

- MSU getting throttled by ND (despite my rooting for the meteor to hit the stadium)

- That Arkansas / Texas A&M game was a fun watch while waiting for ours to start

- I'm not terribly upset with the decision to go with FOX for some of the B1G games. It definitely wasn't as bad as it could be, and despite the weird camera angles, it was quite fun to watch. I also definitely appreciated them cutting over to our game from the baseball game for those of us in-market.

- Our schedule looks a lot less terrifying than it did on Friday. I have a lot of faith in this team, and if they continue to grow my belief that they can accomplish great things will grow.

Go Blue, and onwards to beat the Spartans!

In what has become a theme, the defense is tremendous, physical, and devastating. 10 yards given up in the second half was the best thing I saw. JOK played great and inspired some life in the offense.

Non Michigan: Barkley is the real deal. I was pulling for Iowa, but you have to give credit to a player who accounts for more than 300 yards of offense.

Worst thing: Purdue seemed to enjoy the cheap shot/ high hit. Speight hasn't played well, but it sucks to see him exit the game on what should have been a personal foul at the very least. The head shots got called for targeting in the second half. Finally, targeting calls that were accurate.
