It's all bullshit but that doesn't mean it's not a huge story.

One of my msu friends texted me tonight and said "wow this stuff seems to get worse and worse for Michigan" and I literally explained to him that there's a whole lot more smoke than there is fire and he ended up effectively saying "that's a great point".

Unfortunately all of this is sure to create a real fire. I know this board downvotes those of us who are pessimistic about how this will turn out but I mean look at all of this chaos. Sure it's built on sand but that's not what the general public sees and these coaches and ADs are smart enough to capitalize on that. I'm severely concerned about how this will all go...it's not like the B1G and the NCAA have a history of being fair with us ...

There's nothing inherently wrong with using anonymous sources in journalism. What is not okay is giving an anonymous source a platform to advocate and express opinion. It's fine for Thamel to report that Big Ten coaches asked Petitti to act, but he crosses ethical lines when he allows himself to be the mouthpiece for anonymous sources to call us "tainted, fraudulent, unprecedented." If those coaches want to express their opinions, they're welcome to do it on the record, but a serious journalist would not publish their grievances anonymously.

From the Associated Press's statement of ethics:

Anonymous material may be used only if:

  • The material is information and not opinion or speculation, and is vital to the news report.
  • The information is not available except under the conditions of anonymity imposed by the source.
  • The source is reliable, and in a position to have accurate information.

It definitely crossed some lines in this story. I'd further say that anonymous sources are necessary when you're dealing with a subject of real import, when national security or major corporations are involved. But this ain't that. It's college football. It's an entertainment product at its core. The stakes just aren't that high, so grow a pair and put your name on it!

Unfortunately, these days, there are few "journalists" adhering to those standards, like they did in the old days.  Today, ethical standards are very low and most of these media sources care only about the clicks.  And I think Michigan is still operating in the era of the media good old days by being silent or issuing terse boilerplate statements.  Michigan needs (IMO) to mount some media  campaign to defend itself, and in general, be more aggressive - NCAA gag order or not.

Isn't there something that we can do to defend ourselves from the constant barrage of one-sided accusations?  Do we have to just sit there and take it while they piss all over us?  This shit has been going viral and we have seemingly done nothing at all.  It cannot continue this way.  At some point the gloves have to come off.

Despite the >1% chance of it happening I’ve actually put alot of thought into what life after the big10 could look like. SEC, ACC, Big12 ?  I don’t really care for the idea of going to an espn dominated network essentially letting them win.

Way out the box idea. What if we went independent with a ND/ACC type contract with the Big12 along with a long extensive contract to play ND every year. Auction off the tv rights to highest paying streaming service. Way outside the box but with ND potentially losing some of there pac12 (usc) games we could potentially agree to play them every year, twice. Week 1 and week 13. At the exact same time as the Big10 championship game every year.

I’m so confused, why would the rival school that paid to dig up dirt on Michigan be angry that Michigan isn’t going to get any meaningful punishment?? Kick rocks, losers and take your Mason Graham beating like the rest of your conference members

I'll save everybody the trouble. Don't click on the link. It's another Thamel article with anonymous sourcing. There is no new ground covered.

Basically, Ryan Day is scared of competing against our team and wants somebody, anybody, to save him. Ryan Day is a pathetic joke. Ohio State has a proud football tradition. Day is not worthy of the title of Ohio State Head Football Coach. Thamel is Day's not-so-secret mouthpiece. They both should go somewhere and rub each other's bellys.

I agree.  I can't imagine a bunch of busy Big Ten coaches wanting to waste an hour and a half on a phone call bashing another program, especially on something they know many of them do too.  Doesn't pass the smell test.

Every coach at that level should be protecting their signals as part of their job.  At least until the NCAA comes to their senses and allows helmet communications.

Why independent?  Would the SEC like to have Michigan in the conference?  Would the ACC like Michigan?  They could probably keep Clemson and FSU if UM joined, and their TV revenue would skyrocket.  Michigan is a national draw; Ohio State (unfortunately) is a national draw.  That's really it for the big ten until USC, UCLA, UW, and Oregon are members.  Even then, it could be argued that UW and UCLA are more regional draws (Penn State is a regional eastern program - there, I said it).  The big ten needs Michigan.  Also interesting that anonymous big ten coaches are very concerned with sign stealing, but never approached the big ten commissioner about OSU paying players and not requiring them to play skool.

The only thing the Big Ten should take action on is changing the revenue payouts to reflect which programs are bringing value. These sorry ass freeloaders have managed to get a pretty good deal for more than a century because of the popularity of programs like Michigan. Instead they want to kill the goose that lays the golden egg. None of these programs draws enough eyeballs, absent the Big Three of the conference, to warrant the rights deal that the Big Ten was able to just sign. Based on the changing landscape of media, the financial situations of these entities, and investor demands there’s no guarantee the next package will be as lucrative for the conference without a demonstration of incremental value improvements so the Little Eleven should get off their high horse. They should count their lucky stars they have us to prop them up. If the Big Ten wants to screw us over I’m all for doing what we did from 1909 to 1915 and telling the Big Ten to pound sand go independent. It’s worked pretty well for Notre Dame and has actually increased their uniqueness, national appeal, and prestige.

I think the big 10 will wait until at least the Penn state game if not longer. If this quote from the article is actually true, Michigan will get paved by Penn state, maryland, and Ohio state and the big ten won’t have to do anything: “The coaches in the Big Ten laid out to Petitti, who was hired in April, just how distinct of a schematic advantage Michigan has held the last three years by illegally obtaining the opposition's signals ahead of time…”

If it’s a load of crap and Michigan continues dominating all the way through Ohio state, then it proves it made no difference. Is the big ten really going to intervene mid season twice in 3 years to make sure Ohio state gets to the big ten championship?

And this article makes it sound like every other big ten coach in the conference feels this way. But the coaches swap secrets every Sunday according to Isaiah Hole. Get out of here. Franklin and Day are the only ones complaining. And day probably called his reporter buddy as soon as the big ten call was over.

Let me start by saying that the NCAA is terrible. Investigate, gather evidence, construct a case, and then divulge your findings. What they are doing now is complete BS! They did nothing about the Alabama doping scandal, or the recruiting violations, or the fact that osu was accused of the same infractions that Michigan is being accused of 4 years ago. Duke paying Zion Williamson. UNC and all of the class and fake results. KANSAS!!!! Clemson's steroid issues. The actions of the NCAA are dangerous and reckless. Have they not set themselves up for the double whammy of libel and slander? I know enough evidence has been presented for something to happen, but I am disappointed about the process  versus other schools aligations. All of this points to things being just money under the table.

You hit the nail on the head. There is no internal consistency whatsoever and it is being pursued as if very-specific people who are hiding behind the veil of anonymity are pursuing personal agendas.

The UNC academic fraud scandal was the most egregious one in my memory because it cuts to the core of the NCAA‘s "student-athlete"-centered supposed raison d‘etre as well as UNC‘s academic mission. UNC was complicit and yet nothing happened. Time for the NCAA and the bloated and overpaid bureaucracy to get out of college football. If they are the standard of integrity then that doesn’t say much.
