B1G and the bowl challenge

Submitted by Lumpers on

Don't look now, but the B1G is 4-0 in the bowl games. I am sure its helping the league that we are not in the playoffs this year, so each team is playing down a slot versus the previous years of the CFP. Of course Sparty got another break with Falk not playing in the Holiday Bowl, but what is new.... if OSU pulls it out tonight, I think the B!G has a chance to go undefeated. It also doesn't hurt that the league hasn't had massive head coaching turnover.  Frost is definitely an upgrade for the Huskers.

Go Blue! Let's get it done on Monday!

ps- so damn proud of the Meeechigan family and the Chad Tough foundation. It really is GREAT to be a Michigan Wolverine!

It starts with Delaney, when he argued for them to play in the Sugar Bowl with Tressel and Prior he showed his true colors or when Sharty beat them in the Championship game and he praised the Cooler Poopers he showed his true colors. Just like the Lions the change has to come at the top, you have to cut the head off sorry Martha just a figure of speech

Why? I want Michigan to beat the best of the best—not beat a downtrodden rival. I want the UM-OSU games to be differences between who gets a championship and who doesn’t. Part of the greatness of the rivalry was that it was powerhouse versus powerhouse. I do not understand hoping or even joking about our biggest rival and ticket to CFP sucking.

In the CFP. Doesn’t matter if Bigten goes 8-0 if Bama or Georgia win the title. Nobody will remember anything but another SEC title. Pray both Georgia and Bama don’t play for it all.

is the most likely slip up.  Pederson is a better coach than Franklin, regardless of having Barkley.  I think the B1G finshes perfect or with one loss, and that most likely PSU going down to UW.

and see us vs the Cocks as a possible slip-up for the Big Ten. Given how impotent our offense has looked for most of the year that doesn't seem that outlandish a notion either. It all depends on what kind of QB shows up for Michigan.

The gap between the respective running games is even bigger than the difference in the passing games though, hence the higher overall rating for our O. Toss in the significant difference in defenses (10th vs 46th) and we're pretty clearly the better team. Anything can happen in one game but we're probably winning this game.

Yeah, very interested to see this matchup. Fancy stats like UW and have them 4th in the country and their defense is better than ours or MSU's or OSU's. Barkley may murder them on special teams but otherwise I think they can play pretty evenly with PSU.

I was sort of going to wait until Sunday to start discussing this topic, specifically B1G vs SEC, and not just bowl performance, non conference power five wins vs losses.

I think it *might* turn into an eye opener that people even thought a 1 loss non conference champ Alabama that did not even play the best team in their conference, played only 8 conference games, and canceled a road game vs Michigan State to play a nobody school, was better than a 2 loss B1G conference champ. Now I'm not advocating for OSU and I think their loss to Clemson last year was a fitting end to the shinnanigans, but let's talk about boosting the importance of conference championships if there are only four slots in the CFP vs giving two to one weak conference.

As soon as their Bosa was ejected, they went off the rails. I laughed so hard that my jaws hurt. I wish Barrett had more eligibility remaining. He has been an anchor on that team for a few years (and strangely broke a ton of records while doing it)

That’s just CFB at its finest. That’s why we love it. Weird shit can and will happen. Kind of the same thing with Michigan last year at Iowa. Really bums me out thinking about all the talent on that team and they just couldn’t quite get there. Kind of the same thing with the late carr Years.

Imo, the committee's only function should be to pick 4 playoff contenders out of the pool of conference champs. OSU should have not made it last year and Bama should not have made it this year.

Particularly when you yourself don't even feel you are up for the task at hand, but you do it anyways because Coach asked it of you. Extra hard when there's a decent liklihood of injury due to holes in the line that have taken out two other qb's. How about we not call Michigan players who gave their best, Jokes, unless we've been on the Field for Michigan ourselves.

(I'm fairly sure nobody who knows what it takes to play in that situation for Michigan would ever call JOK a Joke).

I'm hearing more comments about the B1G in a positive light.  After tomorrow's games, the narrative will be set.  If Penn State and Wisconsin win, then the B1G will have a solid gripe against the selection committee. If Clemson rolls over Alabama on Monday - the narrative will become even stronger.  I'm rooting for the B1G tomorrow and obviously on Monday for Michigan.  When a full team of Harbaugh players takes the field in 2018, the stage will be already set for a title run.

The Pac 12 has looked like hot garbage so they have no beef.  The Big 12 has done well so far, but they have a team in the playoffs.  The SEC is likely to go 3-6 this year and that would be pathetic. The ACC will probably have a record of 0.500 or worse when bowl season is done. I'm hoping Frost elevates Nebraska and Fleck does the same with Minnesota.  Northwestern is pesky and Purdue is on the rise (as long as Brohm is there).

But will this really change the narrative?  Sure there could be an argument that OSU should have been included over Alabama... but if you look at the results of the bowl games thus far, it appears to follow what we knew from the season--the Big Ten was across the board (mostly in the East) strong, and the SEC and ACC had down years except for the top 1 or 2 teams.  The big surprise to me is the PAC-12, for which I am willing to give due credit to the selection committee...

But if they were tasked with finding the top 4 teams... depending on how the playoff games shake out, they could walk away patting themselves on the back.  And the only way I could see things not working int he selection committee's favor is another blow out.  Even still, OSU's defense looked great against USC (YTUSC), but their offense still looked pedestrian (at least in the first half at which point I turned it off.

The real question that would help the Big Ten in my opinion is if it clearly looks like the committee screwed up in leaving OSU out.  The strong performance by the Big Ten could support such an argument, but if all the playoff games are close, the committee shrugs and says job well done.

I’ll give you that point. The SEC was down this year. If Clemson and Oklahoma roll into the NCG with ease, the committee will have no choice but to second guess their selection. Root for the SEC to get destroyed in all their remaining bowl games. If even the top of the SEC is garbage, it will damage their reputation for sure.

As much as I hate Bama and their cheating ways I have a hard time putting OSU in with their two bad loses and a couple of escapes much like PSU last year you can't look past a nearly 6 TD loss to us and  loss to Pitt and a choke job by OSU. Does Bama's body of work show they deserve it fuck no but who then? Washington, Auburn, UCF? nope

Michigan needs to win. I don’t give two shits about the rest of the Big Ten and never have. They can all fuck off.

If the BIG goes undefeated they make an obligatory nod on sportscenter and that will be the end of it.  Just like the BIG vs ACC basketball challenge, when the BIG won 5 in a row they got very little mention.  Now that the ACC has won the last two, they just gush over them.

ESPN has an agenda (SEC) and that is all that they want to push.  Just watch if either Georgia or Alabama win the NC, and see how the SEC gets praised and the rest of the bowl season won't matter.

Is if B1G goes 8-0 and both Bama and UGA lose first games in the CFP.  Bama didn't beat anybody this year alabama football schedule . Just an absolute joke of a schedule.  If SEC gets two coveted CFP spots and flops, and the B1G goes 8-0 in bowls and gets shut out of the CFP, then I think the committee has a shitstorm on their hands.  I think they will have to look at expansion to 8 or 16 teams, as our Coach has recommended.

Frankly, I think it's a given that college football goes to a 16 team playoff, where there are 2 non -conference games, then a 9 game conference schedule, then a Selection Sunday like college hoops where the best 16 get in.  This likely means the Conference championship games get abolished, but the season still ends the first week in January.

SEC was warmed over oatmeal this year.  Let's serve the Cocks up a healthy dose.

Is all B1G (most importantly M) teams win, and the two SEC teams lose in final four leaving Clemson and OK with OK winning.  I have adopted OK for the final 4.  Sick of "Dabo" and "Nick" and SEC.
