Awful Announcing Crew for Michigan @ Maryland 2017

Submitted by markusr2007 on

Here is the announcing crew for Michigan @ Maryland, as well as other games, tomorrow:

http://awfulannouncing.com/schedules/2017-week-11-college-football-announcing-schedule.html

3:30 PM- Michigan at Maryland (BTN) Brandon Gaudin, Glen Mason, Elise Menaker

Brandon Gaudin:

Glen Mason:

Elise Menaker:

I could be wrong but this might be one of the first games I've heard Brandon Gaudin.

I think Gaudin does a decent enough job.  Here is one example of his work: GaTech @ Pitt from 2013

Probably an improvement in an otherwise talentless industry as of late, at least at the college football level.

MSU @ Ohio State gets Brady Quinn, so yay!?

Literally, there's people on this board who hates everyone that isn't Keith Jackson.

Millen, Herby, Speilman, Huard, Blackmon.  Someone on this board hates one of these if not everyone.

"Michigan fans are only happy when they're unhappy."

I always think talking for 3.5 half hours is an impossible job, when you think a football game is only 18 minutes of action.   Talk to a TV executive pitching a show where guys talk for 3 hours, he will laugh in your face.

That being  said Quinn and Mason kinda suck.  I like all the guys above, they have flaws but call a good game.

And Joe Buck calling baseball can go to hell...  Fricking best World Series all time...he's updating the time every half inning.   If you don't want to be there just say so, everyone else is enjoying these amazing games.

Keith Jackson and Howard Cosell did work together for the first year of Monday Night Football back in 1970.

Jackson claimed that Cosell set his pants on fire during an MNF broadcast.

"He had the cigar, all that vodka," he recalls. "I almost threw him out of the booth myself." "Howard did throw up all over Meredith's cowboy boots," he recalls of that tumultuous night in the "MNF" booth. "It was 28 degrees in Philly and Cosell had been drinking for three hours," he says.

This thread prompted me to do a quick search for Keith Jackson as he is my favorite all time football broadcaster. This is a pretty good article from 2013.

Key quotes:

Any other tips for today's broadcasters?

"They talk too damn much," he says. "You wear the audience out."

And, even more importantly: "You must tell the truth," he says of both broadcasters and coaches. "You must be truthful to yourself and the values of the game that got you there."

A few more observations from Jackson's six decades in the booth:

—"The '72 Trojans were the best football team I ever saw."

—"Bo Schembechler was the best after-dinner speaker I ever heard. He'd even have the old boys in the back of the room snorting and jumping up and down."

—Legendary innovator Amos Alonzo Stagg "studied the ministry but couldn't deliver a sermon ... he had heart palpitations. So he became a football coach."

Not sure why the radio and TV can't be synced.  It's no doubt something obvious that I alone don't get.

Depending on who is around the house at what time, I prefer to listen to Brandy and Dierdorf, liveblogging, and occaisonally running to the TV after I already know what is happening.

Other people that live here, have extreme issues with the lag time.

I don't get the liveblogging thing.  How do you actually watch the game if you're keeping up with whats being liveblogged?  Or do you just post your own comment stream, and not worry about what anyone else says?  In which case, what's the point?  The game threads are the same way.  I'll post on those occasionally, but there's no conversation - only a stream of thoughts from random people.  Very little follow-up to anything because it moves so fast.

Guess I'm just old, and don't get the whole live bloggin thing...  Just stay off my lawn when your bloggin that shit.

Following the games on twitter/live tweeting is like my favorite thing. People are hilarious and you pick up stuff you missed. I think the issue with the game threads is the number of people. Too many posters make it impossible to keep up but when you choose who you follow, it's a lot easier (and you get the best content, not just people shouting into the void) Plus when you think about how much down time there is in football, there's plenty of time to catch up.

Never gave much thought about announcers until this Brando guy starts whining about a depth chart. He may be an ass hat but my god Spencer Tillman might be the dumbest announcer ever. He said Mo Hurst weighs 208 lbs.. Tells everyone Bush is 6'2" right after Brando says he is 5'11". The guy praises the o-lineman from Minnesota for throwing punches. I guess he felt sorry for them. He is beyond terrible.

As far as Millen goes he would not bother me as much if it was not for his days with the lions. He is a psu slappy but he is not as bad as Galloway. Can't stand that osu chump.

Love Brandy's show and when he did color, but he even knows they need a play by play guy. Someone said something about him being a homer. Bob Ufer was a homer, but even as a young guy I would love listening to that guy. He would just get so excited.

Love the fact that Greise was announcing the Iowa beat down of osu. A lot on eleven warriors made mention of that and anything they don't like is just good. When he does Michigan games he does go out of his way to be critical as to not look like a homer though.

I’m truly surprised by the number of you who care so much about announcing crews. They’re all pretty much the same to me: mostly generic stuff said, some good background stories shared about the teams, some dumb things said such as Hogdon or Omorah Dorbah.

Who really cares? You get to watch your wolverines play with the best seat in the house (the comfort of your own home). Mute it if it’s that horrific to you.
