Another NFL mock draft roundup b/c why not
Draft is about 2 weeks away and it's been a while since I did one of these.
Definitely check out Blue Middle's excellent diary series on the Lions in the Draft.
- OT: The NFL Draft and the Lions (a multi-part diary for people who want fun and mostly useless info)
- OT: The NFL Draft and the Lions (Part II)
- OT: The NFL Draft and the Lions - All the prospects you need to know (and so many that you don't)
You can also see dnak438's summary of the Michigan players in the draft and their respective rankings.
This focuses more on what the draftniks/talking heads are saying about the top 5, Michigan players, and the Lions (ok, so I'm not really a Lions fan, but I'm pandering to the base.
Without further ado, here are the recent mock drafts:
- 1 CHI - Caleb Williams
- 2 WAS - Jayden Daniels
- 3 NE - Drake Maye
- 4 ARI - Marvin Harrison Jr
- 5 MIN (from LAC) - JJ McCarthy
- 29 DET - Adonai Mitchell (WR, Texas) (Chop Robinson is a popular pick here, but Kiper has him going to TB at 26)
- 33 NYG - Bo Nix (!)
- 37 LAR (from LAC) - Michael Penix
- 48 JAX - Kris Jenkins
- 49 CIN - Roman Wilson
- 59 HOU - Mike Sainristil
- 61 DET - Adisa Isaac (DE, PSU)
- 1 CHI - Caleb Williams
- 2 WAS - Jayden Daniels
- 3 NE - JJ McCarthy (!!)
- 4 ARI - Marvin Harrison Jr
- 5 MIN (from LAC) - Drake Maye
- 29 DET - Chop Robinson
NFL.com/Gennaro Filice from 4/11 (I just wanted to write his name out and say it again in my head with a poor Italian accent)
- 1 CHI - Caleb Williams
- 2 WAS - Drake Maye
- 3 NE - Jayden Daniels
- 4 ARI - Marvin Harrison Jr
- 5 MIN (from LAC) - JJ McCarthy
- 29 DET - Kool-Aid McKinstry (he doesn't have Chop Robinson going in the first round at all)
- 30 LAS - Michael Penix
- 1 CHI - Caleb Williams
- 2 WAS - Drake Maye
- 3 NE - Jayden Daniels
- 4 ARI - Marvin Harrison Jr
- 5 MIN (from LAC) - JJ McCarthy
- 12 DEN - Bo Nix (!!!)
- 13 LAS - Michael Penix (!!!)
- 29 DET - Kool-Aid McKinstry
CBS/Trapasso from 4/11 (all 7 rounds!)
- 1 CHI - Caleb Williams
- 2 WAS - Jayden Daniels
- 3 NE - JJ McCarthy (!!)
- 4 ARI - Marvin Harrison Jr
- 5 MIN (from LAC) - Drake Maye
- 29 DET - Kool-Aid McKinstry (he has Chop Robinson off the boord at 22 to PHI)
- 48 JAX - Kris Jenkins
- 61 DET - Bralen Trice (DE, Washington)
- 69 LAC - Junior Colson
- 73 DET - Javon Baker, WR, UCF
- 82 IND - Roman Wilson
- 95 KC - Mike Sainristil
- 140 LAC - Blake Corum (of course JH would do such a thing)
- 147 DEN - Erick All (sorry, had to do it b/c they listed All's school as Michigan lol)
- 164 DET - Shyheim Battle, CB, North Carolina State
- 176 PIT - Jaylen Harrell
- 184 MIA - Braiden McGregor
- 201 DET - Marist Liufau, LB, Notre Dame
- 205 DET - Isaac Guerendo, RB, Louisville
- 207 DEN - AJ Barner
- 213 LAR - Cornelius Johnson
- 235 SEA - Drake Nugent
- 249 DET - Sundiata Anderson, EDGE, Grambling State
tl;dr - pretty much a consensus at this point that JJ will be a top 5 pick. Looks like the pendulum is swinging toward McKinstry as the pick for DET. Jenkins seems to be a 2nd round lock at this point. We could have as many as 11 (or 12 if you count Erick All lol) players drafted.
Maybe I'm overlooking this but CBS/Trapasso is delusional if he doesn't think Zinter is getting drafted. (I didn't follow the link; I just don't see him listed on OP).
Yea, that one is pretty questionable with zero Michigan Oline being drafted.
Good catch. I was so focused on transcribing the projections that I didn't even notice the absence of Zinter. That's a miss on his part for sure. Only OL he has listed is Drake Nugent.
These mocks are so silly. Some sports writer has to remember and rank what, 206 players? My guess is Zinter was overlooked. And I'm guessing there were others.
Im curious - the record drafted is 15. Do any display 15 or more than 15 Michigan players drafted?
Michigan coaches were drafted too imo. Harbaugh, Minter and Herbert = +3.
... and Steve Clinkscale, and Jay Harbaugh = +5
This is the first year I’ve paid any attention to this stuff, because McCarthy is an intriguing prospect. It really is a great example of a couple things. 1. How much an industry is made off of BS talking heads making shit up. 2. How much of a draw the NFL is in the US. That people consume this stuff more than other actual sports, thus justifying the demand for idiot talking heads, is mind boggling.
I agree
97.1 pretty much still talk Lions and the draft all day long every day. Valenti and Rico are in a near panic that NFL GMs don't understand how bad JJ McCarthy is.
I was watching the talking heads while at a restaurant for lunch yesterday, and the question was should JJ be a top 5 pick (it was muted, but that was the tag line for the discussion). I couldn't hear (re on mute) and there was no closed captioning, but Stephen A Smith was spouting something off and showed plays of JJ's picks this year. I was like what, he only has 4 and 3 were from BGSU. They even showed the almost INT from the Rose Bowl. Man, these guys try so hard to be controversial, and it worked - my blood was boiling.
That's Smith's schtick - be "contrarian" and be "controversial" and be "provocative" just for the sake of being so. Oh, that and literally being the loudest voice in the room. This is why I literally only watch ESPN these days for the live sports. I don't even watch Sportscenter anymore.

i disagree
Fun fact: The Super Bowl makes up the entirety of the list for top 10 most-watched telecasts (by average viewership) of all-time. Even further, it holds 19 of the top 20 spots. The only non-sports/non-Super Bowl telecast to crack the top 20 is the series finale of M*A*S*H in 1983.
Perhaps we can start a thread which predicts which QBs will be “the best of the draft” in five years time.
If they dont get hurt, Daniels and McCarthy are my pick. But they are a bit slight and like to take off, so they are both high risk.
If Roman Wilson gets drafted by the Colts I will be so damn happy!
LAS = LV Raiders? When did the abbreviation for Las Vegas become LAS?
I'm a frequent business traveler so I tend to think in airport codes. LAS is the airport code for Las Vegas.
Thanks man that totally makes sense
The ol' DTW Lions
So much better than the ORD Bears.
The Lions are built on having an elite offensive line. They have 2 30-plus year old guards and a tackle on the last year of his contract. There is no way in hell they skip OL is this loaded draft. Would love to see them steal Zinter in the 3rd/4th.
CoJo at 213 is an absolute STEAL
ya im gonna need more Michigan -> Lions picks
My mock draft for the Lions
- Round 1: No. 29 - Jenkins
- Round 2: No. 61 - Mikey
- Round 3: No. 73 - Zinter
- Round 3: No. 92 - Wilson
- Round 5: No. 164 - Blake
- Round 6: No. 201 - CJ
- Round 6: No. 205 - McGregor
Round 7: No. 249 - Nugent
Profit!

HA! Shit - you wish they could get Blake in the 5th...
I'll bet you a crisp Abraham Lincoln that he's gone by then
Is there a non-crisp penny?

I'll be at the draft... I've been working on signs to take in. I just saw that the size limitations are 28x22 - I'm going to have to cut my sign into 3 parts and me, my wife, my kid carry in different pieces.
Just saw a notification that JJ wasn't going to be at the draft - that's BS!!! He NEEDS to be there. Detroit is his market

Said before and I'll say it again.
The best part about the draft is watching the stupid look on Kipers stupid face when he gets every pick abysmally wrong every fucking round, of every fucking year, while rocking that dumb fucking 1950's hairdo that must take 2hrs in a makeup chair to achieve.

I lol'd at that
it's funny because it's true
