5 More Spartans arraigned, attorney formally uses "but Juwannn" defense.
Five Michigan State players were arraigned Friday on misdemeanor assault charges stemming from an altercation in the Michigan Stadium tunnel following the Michigan-Michigan State game in late October.
The players, redshirt sophomore Itayvion Brown, junior Angelo Grose, redshirt junior Justin White, senior Brandon Wright and freshman Zion Young all received $10,000 personal-recognizance bonds, and are scheduled to appear for a pretrial Dec. 15 before Karen Quinlan Valvo, chief judge of the 15th District Court in Ann Arbor.
The players and their lawyers appeared virtually before Judge Tamara Garwood of 15th Judicial District Court.
Garwood ordered that the players could have contact with each other only for football purposes. Outside of football purposes, they must have their lawyers present. Garwood also ordered that the players have no contact with the Michigan football team, Michigan football coaches or the University of Michigan, an order that didn't sit well with defense lawyers, calling it essentially a ban from visiting Ann Arbor.
"I don't remember coach Juwan Howard being prevented from contacting the University of Wisconsin. I'm just a little troubled by the heavy-handedness of it, Judge. But that is your right."
Howard, Michigan's basketball coach, was suspended for the final five games of last regular season following an incident in which he slapped a Wisconsin coach following a game in Madison.
Howard did not face legal charges.
"Juwan Howard did not come in front of me," Garwood said in response to Fink. "Had he come in front of me, had that happened here and he was in front of me, he likely would've ended up with similar conditions."

Otherwise, I suggest you get in that tunnel, pick up a helmet, and stand a post.

“EITHER WAY, JUWAN HOWARD IS GONNA CLAW YOU IN THE FACE!”

Oddly, this sums up Sparty perfectly.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:27 PM ^
I knew the attorney's name sounded familiar - Wade Fink got into it with Scott Bell early this year and let's just say he's prone to...complain about Michigan sports.

Honestly, slap a clown nose on that guy in the "professional" picture (I use the term loosely) and he would appear the perfect manifestation of that school's psyche.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:52 PM ^
The funny thing is the guy didn't even go to MSU; per LinkedIn he went to Emerson college and then Wayne St. for law school. He's really just a fan who doesn't like people speaking ill of MSU.
December 2nd, 2022 at 3:07 PM ^
Emerson College? It's a filmmaking and dramatic studies school in Bahstahn. Guess he majored in Drama or he liked the way Joe Pesci acted as an attorney in My Cousin Vinnie.

Twitter is just the worst.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:29 PM ^
Fuck the judge, too, then. But if it's me looking for a lawyer after I go ham on another team's player in the tunnel of their stadium, I DON'T look for some tinhorn weenie who's gonna turn my case into a circus. That's just me, though.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:30 PM ^
All of this wasted energy and money...
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:31 PM ^
Goodness, it is hard to keep up. They are mad at the blue wall media, they are mad at the prosecutor, they are mad at Harbaugh, they are mad at the national media, our fans are not nice and arrogant, but Juwan, they are mad at the tunnel, they are mad their players were suspended 4 games, they are mad they are not going to a bowl.
What can we, the fans, do to help our little brethren cope with all of this madness?
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:47 PM ^
Give them their blankey & pacifier and let them cry it out. Worked with all 3 of my kids when they were babies.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:19 PM ^
pacifier? It is pronounced "binkey"
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:06 PM ^
Stop talking about them.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:48 PM ^
How can you possibly omit the Michigan Mafia? They're like the Blue Wall, but with omerta.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:51 PM ^
We can go win a National Championship, so that they can hang on to the claim that they are 1 of 2 teams to beat us in the last two seasons :)

Theses motherfuckers are going from cliche to cartoon levels of grievance manufacturing. It’s hard to believe that people in positions of power are speaking some of these words. I’m embarrassed for them.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:33 PM ^
This is a perfect statement. It’s literally bizzaro world
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:51 PM ^
Honestly, the whole thing is truly nuts. I think Seth said it best. "Culture of grievance." There was a guy last night who replied to at least 8 national writers who posted, not always about Michigan, "when are you going to cover the #michigancoverup?" I honestly hope that guy has someone in his life who can say, "dude, you have lost all perspective. Take a step back and find something else to do."
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:33 PM ^
Hahaha. Did Juwan get charges filed on him? Do people not understand the person assaulted has to agree to charges being filed?
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:37 PM ^
No, the DA can charge somebody without the victim's agreement. It helps to have the victim's agreement if it goes to trial.
December 2nd, 2022 at 8:01 PM ^
On a smack? Yeah you going to need to the person to press charges no DA is going after that and all you lawyers on here know it.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:36 PM ^
And so the legal process slowly grinds on. If they didn't want to be in this legal meat grinder, they should have kept "their hands to themselves" (helmets too).
Spartys? This is what happens when you behave the way you did. Deal with it.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:36 PM ^
And they get so mad when we call them little brother.....
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:46 PM ^
I know its a little sophomoric to keep the litte brother thing going…but damn it would not have stuck so well if all the MSU fans werent enraged by it. It stings when its true
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:41 PM ^
MSU broadly has a culture problem. From top to bottom its like this. I feel like America at large doesnt appreciate it because nobody notices MSU that much outside of Michigan but the whole gang has this Disrespeck syndrome
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:45 PM ^
Not living in Michigan anymore, I wonder if the grievance collectors represent the MSU fan base generally or if it's just fringe crackpots.
Normally I'd interpret it as crackpots but when its leaders make the same ridiculous mouth noises, it looks to be spread generally.
I posted earlier about my disappointment in Izzo. I'd discounted most of his whining as more rivalry stuff than real, as much about me in the rivalry as about him. But to absolve attacks on human beings and attempt to switch blame isn't the action of a leader or person of character, it's demonstration of a lack of character.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:59 PM ^
^ this ^
Lack of character, leadership. Yes. Thank you.
👍
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:26 PM ^
It's the base, or at least a significant amount of the fan base. Sure, your friends and neighbors can be civil and joke about it with you (especially if you are able to also laugh at your own expense), but it's definitely inherent to their belief system that Michigan is always at fault.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:46 PM ^
What the ever living heck is wrong with these people. Serious cult feel. Like how is whatever happened with Juwan Howard applicable to this at all? Is this attorney for real? It's like a cartoon attorney thought up just to please message board people and those who are way to online.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:50 PM ^
Howard has no bearing on this *criminal* case. Different circumstances. Different jurisdiction. Different state. Different severity.
If the attorney wants to argue about punishment from the Big Ten, he may have a claim (though unlikely since Howard was similarly suspended). This is borderline malpractice to use a legal defense.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:54 PM ^
Yes, exactly! Like I have to imagine the attorney knows that right? Like the only point of making a comment like that is to feed the grievance machine in MSU message boards right?
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:09 PM ^
How embarrassing for his client.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:47 PM ^
Forgot the Howard thing happened in Madison. That makes the comparison even more absurdly irrelevant
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:56 PM ^
This just proves how deep the conspiracy goes!
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:39 PM ^
This is why I've been bringing up to every MSU fan that mentions it that while Juwan is partially responsible for what happened, we shouldn't discount the responsibility the Badgers carry for not properly securing the handshake line.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:55 PM ^
Haha that's gold
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:49 PM ^
The attorney is merely making comments meant to satiate the majority of his EL clientele and friends. IANAL, but it seems professionally reckless to make flippant comments like that in front of a judge.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:51 PM ^
Sparty nooooo!
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:52 PM ^
Sounds familiar to a certain orange tinted person and his attorneys.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:50 PM ^
Their attorney is damn idiot for invoking Howard. I wish the Judge had lectured him that that isn't a valid excuse and, as an attorney, he should be ashamed for using it.
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:52 PM ^
Deranged fan base through and through
December 2nd, 2022 at 1:56 PM ^
Even their lawyers are clowns.
Did they hire that guy on RCMB?
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:01 PM ^
In fairness, the lawyer doesn't have a whole lot to work with here.

Is it fair to say that Sparty's eternal quest for validation and vindication is once again getting... bluewalled?
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:10 PM ^
This cannot be a real attorney. From that letter to every thing that comes out of his mouth he sounds like Uncle Rico from napoleon dynamite
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:19 PM ^
It's actually 2 different attorneys.
December 2nd, 2022 at 2:11 PM ^
Good response from the judge especially on such a dumb ass comment from the attorney

Your title suggest that 5 additional players were charged. These are the same players that were already charged.
