40 draft picks in Harbaugh era, 37 in 2005-2015 drafts; 4 OL drafted for first time since 1948

From the 2005-2015 NFL drafts, Michigan had 37 draft picks total and 6 first rounders.
In Harbaugh's 5 years here he has had 40 draft picks and 5 first rounders.
Also, the 4 OL drafted (Ruiz, Bredeson, Onwenu, Runyan) is the first time it has happened to Michigan in the common draft era (since 1970). Came close with 3 OL picked in the 1949, 1951, 1957, 1964, 1971, 1978, 1982 and 2001.
The last time 4 OL were drafted was the 1948 NFL Draft.
Jim Brieske, Center, 6-2/195, 97th overall in 12th round to Giants
Quentin Sickels, Guard, 6-2/190, 147th overall in 17th round to Lions
Ralph Kohl, Tackle, 6-2/223, 153rd overall in 17th round to Eagles
Bruce Hilkene, Tackle, 6-2/190, 283rd in 30th round to Steelers
That's... not a bad stat at all.
We get guys drafted which is great. But the number of guys we placed in the first 3 rounds this year vs Alabama, LSU, Clemson and OSU was also really telling (summary - a lot fewer). I get that they’ll be some ebb and flow on raw numbers each year depending on demographics but if you assume NFL scouts are good judges of talent we are solid but clearly not in the upper echelon. Which is also what it feels like on the field.
Go Blue either way and congrats to all UM players moving on to the NFL! May they all have careers that are successful, long, healthy, and lucrative.
People are going to take this news both ways. Either we drafted a lot of players because they were 3-4 projects and not elite, or the talent we have is much better than the results on the field shows. I’m not sure if we should feel good or bad or maybe both? Beat OSU, win your bowl game. Until this starts to happen, I don’t know what the draft results are supposed to mean.
The number is 31 not 40. Still very good but not as good as Devotee thinks, Math is hard.
This is the most respectable post you’ve ever made, Shawn. I must tip my hat.
You still f*** goats.

I guess this stat means something...but I don't know what it is. Harbaugh still doesn't have this team anywhere close to elite. We are getting destroyed at historic levels by our biggest rival. We have a horrible Bowl record. Can't beat ranked teams on the road.
But...I guess "Hooray" that we have more people in the NFL draft than before. The stat is meaningless when it comes to results on the field, but happy for these young men to play out their dreams in the NFL.
WOW so amazing ??
It’s really sad that Gattis wasted all that offensive line talent.
First year OC with a banged and inconsistent QB was tough. Let's see what happens next year.
Thia isn't how I would phrase it, but I do wonder why the running game wasn't more effective.
Because the run game is supposed to consist of the QB running the ball in this offense and the QB didn't do that. We'll never fucking know why, but he didn't. Our rushing numbers could look so much better. And oh hey, it probably would've helped the passing game as well if the defense actually had to remotely think the QB could run.
Michigan football ladies and gents. A real treat.
Ease up, hardass

Maybe we won't know the answer why Patterson couldn't run the ball, but that just raises the question of why they didn't go to Plan B, or why Plan B didn't work.
Of course part of that may have been the mysterious injury or non-injury to ZC.

Oh fuck off. He was a year OC figuring out what he had.MEvery HC and OC/DC gets a mulligan their first season to figure shit out.
Just curious, how many of those 30 previous picks are still in the NFL and how many of those other 37 as well.
That's not something unique to Michigan.
All but one guy who was drafted and coached by Harbaugh are on NFL rosters.

Thanks for the info. That's a pretty neat comparison. Itll be interesting in about 4-5 years to see what the staying power and accomplishments of Harbaugh guys are vs the other coaches.

Jake Ryan just signed with Baltimore.

Should note that Jeremy Clark had tough breaks with injuries but still managed to get on a NFL roster for a hot minute
I'm really not sure why I got negged, this was a serious question for comparison sakes. I think someone is a little too sensitive right now.

Plenty of Alabama, Clemson, OSU, Georgia and LSU guys have been run out of the league in the last few years, too.
Beautiful thing about the league is it is truly merit based. If your game is actually worth a damn, you get to stay. It doesn’t give a fuck how many stars you had coming out of HS.
But how good will those draft picks be in 2 - 3 years
I guess that depends on the development and chances their respective franchises give them and (far more important) their personal drive to succeed, wouldn’t you say?
also, check out user sque32. suspiciously like your favorite. just sayin'.
The number of Michigan players drafted is going to go down the next few years with the way Harbaugh is recruiting.
To give the man some credit, a lot of those draftees were Hoke players.
But he was horrible at player development. Just horrible. He could recruit, but couldn’t do anything with them. Which would explain he ever declining record.
I agree. Harbaugh's best team was with Hoke's players. Hoke didn't know how to use them
ACK! Positive news! Get it off! GET IT OFF!!!
Call me crazy or a fanatic but this is very encouraging. We might be closer than we think for playing for a championship. I read this as supporting facts that we are heading in the right direction. The time is disappointing but the direction is still good.
I don't think so. Look closer. Harbaugh's list includes the 2016 draft class that was huge and all recruited by his predecessor. I think the talent gap between UM and OSU or other powers is bigger today than it was when Harbaugh arrived. He's had trouble stringing together more than two good classes in a row. OSU and the rest have top classes every single year.
What about between UM and Toledo or Rutgers or UConn?
Harbaugh came in '15 and had a small class that year. You must mean '14...

Hard to agree when most of OSU's guys are getting drafted in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounds while most of ours are getting drafted in the 5th, 6th and 7th rounds. Shows that there's still a significant talent gap, even if the raw number of draft picks is the same.

always appreciate you coming with receipts
Cool.
Fucking win something.
Holy shit, devoted. That is just astounding news.
So how do we lose 3+ games every year?
Well honestly UM plays 2 teams every year that have more. One substantially more.
April 26th, 2020 at 12:13 AM ^
who's the second team that gets more talent?
PSU - Not every year, but last year per 247 and probably next year.
Once Wisconsin gets off the schedule, I think after this year, part of that problem goes away. The rest of the Big Ten West is a joke. Harbaugh can beat MSU and PSU, and Wisconsin (at home). He’s proven he can do that.
OSU is a loss every year until proven otherwise, but you find years where you don’t have to play Wisconsin or go to Kinnick, and I think you’re in great shape. MSU is clearly down, almost beat Penn State at home this year. This is just me, but I think getting Wisconsin off the schedule does wonders for Michigan over the next few years.
When the schedule lines up right and you get a down MSU on the road and PSU at home, I think you can get Michigan to win 11 games in regular season and make the Rose Bowl.
April 25th, 2020 at 10:05 PM ^
Or we could try actually winning some tough games on the road for a change.
April 25th, 2020 at 11:10 PM ^
I don’t disagree, but when have you seen Michigan win a truly meaningful road game in the last ten years? 15 years?
Depending on who you ask, Michigan hasn’t won a truly meaningful game on the road since maybe Woodson, Brady or Perry were on the sidelines. Take what you can get.
Harbaugh, the QB whisperer, is doing a bang up job sending QBs to the league. Always putting a high QB pick in the league. His specialty is shining like diamonds.
“Errrr, but how many starzzz is he?””
