WTKA Roundtable 5/4/2023: The Herbertization Chamber
Things discussed:
- The boys are back in town: Michigan recruiting Ohio.
- The Draft: A Jim Harbaugh tight end is getting drafted, don't care where he was ranked.
- Michigan's player development: look no further than DJ Turner (didn't mean to rhyme that). Herbert fixed a glute problem that plagued DJ into his 2nd year of college.
- MSU Exodus: It's a bad sign when your starters are transferring after practice. Why? They're seeing how bad they are: Nobody's a better scout than your own team.
- Coach BT (Brandon Jordan) was the reason recruits were coming, because the NFL guys were coming to train here too. Spartan media are going to try to spin it as Kim/Houser but the question they should be asking is if money is the reason somebody's there, you can lose them for money as well. Lotta players married the mistress.
- Keon Coleman is from "OppahLOOsuh" Louisiana. AKA "The Slop."
- Also Deion Sanders looked at the Mel Tucker guys on his roster and got rid of them all.
- Lions Draft: Campbell was the most Lions guy in the draft. Sam likes the picks, not the order.
- Hunter Dickinson: There are more important things, like $3 million of them if you believe lying numbers, than having your name in the rafters. Seth/Brian disagree whether the flowers and candy for Michigan is necessary. Brian: Just go. Seth: Appreciate the gifts, never expect them.
- Losing Muck: He got passed over, so it's understandable. Bacon: if the report says you can't have him here, don't have him here; if it doesn't then that's not a reason not to hire him. Seth: Red did well to set up the hierarchy, but you don't have to follow it.

It's a nice seat; if the seat's hot, he can just change the setting on the seat.
"The player not the order" is such a tired and lazy take on the Lions draft.
Maybe, just maybe, it was the media and YouTube guys that were wrong and the entire NFL scouting apparatus that was right.
Who the hell is Mel Kiper Jr.?
How are you equating the Lions taking guys nowhere near the consensus of myriad draft boards as "the entire NFL scouting apparatus"?
What are you basing that claim on?!
What are you basing the concensus on? Some guy in his parents basement thats never interviewed, personally watched or privately worked out 1 player let alone his delusional bigboard?
The NFL teams are the only ones doing the above.
How is Michigan not able to get Hunter Dickinson $3million in NIL? Is NIL only going to the football program? This is the most frustrating part of this. I understand it with recruiting, don't agree with it, but I get Michigan wants to claim the higher morals, but he's already here and established, how can the program not have that set up unless they didn't want him or don't support basketball close to the level of football.
How much $$ have you contributed to Michigan's NIL funds? I don't think Michigan has as much NIL money to throw around as people think. Michigan doesn't have the same level of boosters as other big programs. Michigan fans also like to talk a lot, but don't seem to contribute that much $$ to the athletics programs.
All just my 2 cents based on a friend who works in fundraising.
So, you are saying that Kansas has much better support than Michigan for sports? The average Kansas fan isn't throwing their money in the hat, it's boosters moving where they spend their money on the program. Michigan has plenty of well-off boosters. I would wager far more than Kansas. Which brings us back to my original question, did they not want to keep Hunter or is there nowhere near the booster support for basketball that there is for football? Otherwise, top Michigan football players would be poached nonstop.
It could also be, Kansas University put the effort into finding the boosters and alumni to find enough NIL money for Hunter and Michigan refused to. That seems pretty likely given Michigan's past stance against facilitating NIL for recruiting.
I would say that Kansas has more money for basketball than Michigan, just like I would say Michigan has more money for football compared to Kansas.
This is not the thrread for making sense.
Michigan state law prohibits universities facilitating NIL for prospective students. Kansas state law does not.
I've read on here a few times that Michigan State doesn't seem to worry about that law.
This comment gave me an idea...comments on the message board cost x cents per comment. Likes/dislikes, and starting threads would also have costs affixed to them. At specified intervals, the message board revenue would be donated to NIL efforts. We as commenters are contributing, and the fact there is a fee tied to the comment would (hopefull) discourage comments that are of lesser overall value to the board. Do I have an MGoSecond?
Anybody willing to give Hunter Dickinson $3 mill won't be a millionaire for much longer. That's a horrible investment.
Maybe Juwan wants to play a different style and gets the Tennessee transfer, vs shelling out 3M.
Wasn't the buzz around Dickinson that he wants the bag AND a chance at a title? He knows he's not going to stick in the NBA, so that leaves 2 years to achieve his goals. He doesn't think it's going to happen at Michigan, so he went shopping for someone that can offer him money and a chance at a ring. I get that. As a fan, I hate it, but as someone with a pretty good job who's also perusing the job market, I get it. You've got to balance your goals. I wouldn't be surprised if Michigan offered him $3.3million and he still went to Kansas, because a chance at a championship might be worth that extra 10% to him.
I don't fault Hunter Dickinson at all for doing what is best for his long-term future. I just struggle with Michigan not seeming to even be able to compete.

Hahah oh man, what a shame. I guess that was during the period before creepy mustaches kinda made a came back. I also call those 'baseball card mustaches' because every dude on baseball cards when I was a kid had a Magnum PI-style mustache.
Indeed. The genesis of this was a report that Wright watched the Super Bowl with Howard Johnson and Keith Hernandez. Naturally we wondered if they discussed the growing and maintenance of mustaches.

Is this what people are actually hearing? My number 1 question this off-season is why the hell is everyone leaving that place? A year ago they were recruiting well (seemed like Tucker was a very good recruiter) and players were on-board.
Is it legit that the players see the team as a whole, regard it as trash, and want to get out of the dumpster fire, or is this just a guess as to why kids are leaving?
I watched a few MSU games and noticed the disgust on Thorne's face regarding his teammates play, and saw him yelling alot at them and flustered. I'm curious if he will start at Auburn if that's where he goes because while I thought he is underrated, I would think that Auburn has good QBs.

Stupid jokes aside, neither of the guys who played last year looked particularly good. Starter Robby Ashford didn't manage to complete half of his throws and backup TJ Finley threw 4 interceptions in 53 passes.
So I think that--depending on who else is on the roster and whether or not either of the incumbents take a big step forward--there's a reasonably good chance that Thorne ends up starting for Auburn.

Matthew Hibner being faster than Marlin Klein is a pretty big surprise. I think Klein was like around a 4.5 based on his track times
