NIK STAUSKAS THA GAWD

I apologize in advance for my inability to form complete thoughts. That game was excruciating right up until the point when it was glorious, which was... the very end, basically.

After quickly losing an early eight-point lead, Michigan fell behind Michigan State by as much as eight points at the 13:29 mark of the second half, mostly due to the heroics of Gary Harris. While hounding Nik Stauskas on the one end, Harris was unstoppable on the other, pouring in a game-high 27 points while adding five rebounds, two assists, and three steals.

The Wolverines clawed back thanks to some remarkable guard play of their own. Nik Stauskas hit five of his six three-point attempts, scored 19 points, dished out four assists, and capped off the effort by trolling the Izzone. His triple with 3:12 remaining gave Michigan a three-point lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Michigan didn't lose that lead in large part due to Derrick Walton, whose 19 points matched Stauskas for the team lead. Ten of those came in the final 2:29, beginning with a fast-break and-one layup after Caris LeVert threaded a perfect outlet pass that hit Walton in stride. Walton also knocked down both of his three-point attempts, 2/4 of two-pointers, and 9/10 from the stripe—8/9 in the game's waning moments. On defense, he helped limit Keith Appling to ten points on 3/11 shooting. If the freshman point guard was nervous, it didn't show.

LeVert scored 17 of his own and pulled down eight rebounds. There was bad with the good—Harris often had his way with LeVert offensively, though that's not a huge knock, and LeVert's three assists were canceled out by three turnovers—but his ability to snake into the lane proved critical, as did his free-throw shooting down the stretch.

Jon Horford also stepped up big, connecting on all three of his field goals and contributing three boards and three blocks. Jordan Morgan rebounded well—four of his five came on offense—but was limited severely by foul trouble. Glenn Robinson III scored nine but struggled with his shot. Mitch McGary, meanwhile, provided valuable coaching advice in the late stages:

WIN THE GAME (via)

In the end, Michigan's total team effort overcame a remarkable performance from Harris and a shorthanded Michigan State squad (I'm required to mention this by law). It also finished off a three-game gauntlet that the Wolverines improbably got through unscathed:

Like, really improbably.

The end result: Michigan is alone in first place in the Big Ten, the last undefeated squad standing, and the schedule eases up significantly during the next three games—Purdue, at Indiana, and Nebraska. Despite breaking in a freshman point guard, dealing with the loss of Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr., and losing Mitch McGary before conference play began, Michigan is in the driver's seat on the road to the conference title.

Kisses, everyone.

We out rebounded MSU 34-30 and 11-10 on ORB.  MSU's tough nosed defense held us to only 80 points.  Oh yeah, all of this happened at the Breslin.

You have to be impressed with this young Michigan team.  They did not crack under tough defensive pressure like last years team did at MSU and OSU.  Great win.

The Greg Oden OSU team might have done it.  It's definitely a rare feat.

Even more amazing is that both UW and MSU were ranked #3 in the country when we beat them.  Last Saturday's game was our highest-ranked road victory in program history . . . and then we just equalled it tonight.

(Funny that we now talk about the upcoming trip to IU as a break in the schedule.  Weird year.)

continues to improve.  And, as one of the five or six youngest teams in the NCAA, that is a damn good thing.  If LeVert and Walton continue to progress, this is gonna be a very tough team to beat in March

I absolutely cannot express how great of a coaching staff we have. This teams expectations from people in the know were quite average at best. How could we rebound from a national title game loss? How could we overcome the loss of Trey Burke and an injured Mitch McGary? How could we compete with the big tens elite while breaking in freshmen / sophomores? The answer: this coaching staff has proven to me that not only is Michigan basketball back, but were fucking here to stay!! #goblue

Mitch McGary might have the shortest learning curve of any assistant coach in the history of the sport.  While not eligible he has thrown his hat in the ring for assistant coach of the year.  Since he has taken over the role, UM has done things not done since 1987.

what made Beilein finally flip?  I was surprised to see it, and about 10 different calls caused me to blow a gasket.  But on this one he kept pointing towards his nose.  Anyone?

ESPN agrees: no asterisk necessary. http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/93116/no-aste… Also, on a side note, there is no way in hell that I believe anyone breaks their hand slamming it on a table. He was either punching things in anger (similar idea to slamming your hand on a table, but more mentally unhinged), or he was doing something MSU would prefer to disguise.

Looking at the pregame write up again on umhoops, and before this game, MSU was giving up .91 ppp against B1G teams and their game with the highest opponent ppp was UNC with 1.07ppp.  Michigan put up 1.28 ppp completely crushing that stat.

My comment on the game: the damn final one minute of the game took at least 20 minutes in real time. It was excruciating. But other than that, Yippppeeeeee!

Do we know why Beilein lost his temper?  It was right after a completely legitmate Goaltending call.  What was the time on the clock when that happened?  I feel like Michigan made its run right after that outburst.

Great job getting the victory at the Bestwin* Center!

* (If we can call Wisconsin's home court Trohl Arena--and the name undoubtedly fits--it's just as fair to acknowledge what it means to Michigan to win at Staee)

Let's be honest Sparty, Michigan was the team with the most adjustments to make and you had home court.

Payne for McGary- even

Dawson for Burke/Hardaway- ??? Seriously!!!!!

I loved watching the Izzone last night. Just makes Stauskas even better. Should be an interesting matchup back in AA.

While it is stupid for MSU folks to complain about injuries when McGary was out for M. It is also stupid to equate count guys who left the team for the NBA in the equation. Burke and Hardaway were never going to at in that game and bringing them up to refute MSU years makes my head explode. It's not like nobody ever left MSU for the NBA.
