1. Looking Back on the Juwan Howard Era

Starts at 1:00

It’s coachin’ search time, baby. Time for Warde Manuel to finally make a decision (unless it’s Beilein). One last look back at the Juwan Howard era. He came in with a good Beilein roster and brought in Franz Wagner. It felt like a seamless transition but then after that he just didn’t have a wing on his roster. Juwan was finding guys who were already shaped for the NBA and not having them prove anything. He also couldn’t play the portal well, it feels like he was too used to managing NBA rosters. It’s not a zero tolerance policy if you keep having incidents happen.

2. The Basketball Coaching Search

Starts at 27:30
Greg McDermott (Creighton), Randy Bennett (Saint Mary’s), Nate Oats (Alabama), and Tony Bennett (NTTB, Virginia) are off the table. John Beilein has been brought up but it feels like a pipe dream. He’s older and not familiar with the NIL era. Shaka Smart probably won’t be interested because football is king at Michigan. Is Michigan a better gig than Marquette? Richard Pitino Jr - needs a better resume than what he did at Minnesota. Brian’s guy is Niko Medved out of Colorado State who has improved the Rams tremendously. He can find weird guys from weird places under the radar and he coaches them up. Also, everyone seems to like him. Darian DeVries (Drake) is a candidate who coached under Medved. His teams seem to be really well coached but are short (they can avoid turnovers and can’t offensive rebound at all but can maniacally clean up their own glass). Dusty May at Florida Atlantic reached the Final Four last year and had a Kenpom top 20 team. This is his 6th year as a college coach but only the second where his team has been good. Amir Abdur-Rahim at South Florida built Kennesaw State from a one win team to a tournament team. Mark Pope of BYU has had top 20 Kenpom teams in three of the five years he’s been at BYU.

3. Hockey at Minnesota - BTT Semifinals

Starts at 1:02:25

Michigan beats Minnesota for the third straight year in the Big Ten Tournament at Mariucci. This will lock up an NCAA Tournament bid and now they play Michigan State in East Lansing for their third straight Big Ten Tournament title. This was probably Michigan’s most complete game of the season. The second period was extremely dominant but felt like they should’ve scored more. Michigan is 1-3 against MSU so far this year after winning their first game 7-1. They’ll likely be a 3 seed. Do you or do you not want to draw Denver?

4. Latest Football Bits

Starts at 1:27:33
Hey, did you hear Michigan sniped Tony Alford from Ohio State? What if he hates Ryan Day more than Michigan?? Who knows. This is a good sign that people want to work for Sherrone Moore. Wink Martindale is learning a lot about the defense from Rod Moore, so maybe the Mike Sainristil effect won’t be as big as we thought. Newly hired defensive line coach Greg Scruggs got an OWI, which was not his first. He’s been suspended indefinitely. Spring football starts today!

I think also there is a perception that some on the academic side are less than enamored with the attention athletics get here, Schlissel having been one and possibly some of the various schools not being willing to bend their standards in regards to accepting transfer credits, whether that's related or not.

If you have NBA players and Hunter Dickinson you should be winning 20 games. Even in the Sweet 16 year he did not win 20 games. Then this year, we have zero NBA players (and no Hunter) and we won 8 games.

I have no doubt he knows ball, but there is something very seriously lacking in his ability to coach, especially defense. That is why he failed, not because he recruited the wrong guys. But also because he has no idea how to put a roster together...I do not understand how we ended up with literally just one ball handler.

I think the roster management issue was the biggest factor. He just couldn’t get his top targets into the school, and when that failed, he had no Plan B. YoYo was a late add, IIRC. We thought that was a good pickup at the time, but after 2 seasons of not being able to see the court, that looks more like a desperation move. Tray Jackson was a backup plan (I hope,) who couldn’t make the transition to the Big10. Aaliya was another late, desperation attempt to get to 12 (not even 13) scholarship players. I watched the Ivy League tournament this weekend. Sure, there are some good players there, but not many that can play at the B10 level. Dipping his feet into that well turned out badly when Llewellyn got hurt. But even before his injury, it was obvious he didn’t have the quickness to guard B10 athletes.

So, in summary, poor planning combined with bad luck and an inability to motivate his team to play defense (or provide a plan on defense that didn’t rely on Reed chasing PGs 30 feet from the basket) were the reasons why we’re looking for a new coach.

I think you're on the right track with the comparison to working at the NBA level, but maybe in a slightly different way. I think Howard tried to coach Michigan like an NBA coach works. He favored certain players (i.e. giving preference to Jett and others) and generally neglected the bottom of the roster. At the NBA level, you have to placate your stars or they will walk. And washed veteran free agents and G-Leaguers are essentially free, so you can always pick up a player to sit on the bench.

However at Michigan, the first slowly, then quickly deteriorated our culture, while the second ensured we never had a solid bench.

Then, with regards to roster construction, Howard tried to build a team with:

  • A maestro point guard
  • Versatile scoring wings
  • Elite post scorer

It takes quite a long time to develop the maestro PG, and once we got on the grad transfer train, it was hard to get off. We put all our eggs in the Dug basket, which fell apart this year when he became more of a scorer than passer.

Versatile scoring wings are a very hot commodity, and at the college level there is a low floor when you go for this approach. A big issue we had was that we could not find wings that could do all we wanted - score, defend, rebound, and pass. Instead of picking a skill, we ended up with players that can do none.

An elite post player is the ultimate luxury in college. We were very lucky to have one in Dickinson. I can't fault Juwan too much for Dickinson deciding to walk, but we really didn't have any backup plan. Reed was nowhere near ready to fill that role this year.

Overall, it seems like Howard wanted to build his roster around some of the rarest, most in-demand skill sets. The team ended up looking awful as we failed to either attract or retain that talent and were forced to turn to subpar players to fill those giant gaps.

Good elaboration on Brian's weekend piece about coaching candidates. I maintain that the basketball program needs a hard reset--there were so many red flags and problems with Juwan's tenure that we really need to start completely over. And I maintain that as Warde interviews candidates he needs to be as clear as can be with them about Michigan's approach to NIL and prospective incoming transfers so that the new coach knows what he's getting into and can proceed accordingly.

I agree with Brian et. al. as well as other commenters that we are truly rolling the dice with this hire. It's one thing to identify candidates on paper but a totally different thing to have them come to Michigan, deal with being under the bright lights at big brand school and then have the patience for 3-5 years while they recruit/develop players, manage and maintain their rosters and create a winning culture. Very tough gig these days, perhaps more so in basketball than in football, and it's all happening in the ever changing world of college sports.

Personally I loved our teams under coach Beilein but his time has passed (even as a prospective assistant!) and I am hoping for a young up and comer with a track record of success in his career thus far. As I've commented previously I favor Darian DeVries but fully acknowledge that it's barely an educated guess at this point.

Michigan basketball program needs a hard reset. There was no other way around it. The new coach would get at least 2 year grace period because Michigan would not be good within the first two year so we'll pretty much treat it like JB's early Michigan team.

The NIL, portal transfer and other things has changed the calculus of basketball recruiting that it's possible to rebuild faster than expected, but with Michigan's systematic issues, I think it'll be slower than most would like it to be.

I like Devries too, but am open with some of the other names already mentioned (Medved).

I'm totally prepared for patience if we start seeing some coaching skills put in action on the court. On another thread, someone mentioned Tom Crean's experience rebuilding a totally devastated IU roster after Sampson got them in trouble. Crean was and is a real dick but he did a good job getting them from 6-25 in his 1st season to 27-9 in Year 4.

Even when JB had a losing season in Year 3, the culture wasn't a tire fire. There is absolutely nothing positive about this year's team, on or off the court.

Warde put the lever and flushed the coach out. Time for the new guy to flush out the locker room (keep Reed and Will). Goodbye, Jace!

After a few days of thought, the firing of Juwan Howard, while warranted, still does not still well with me.  I don't think I've ever felt this way about other firings in the past. I'm sad, very sad.  And I feel most of the blame should not go to Juwan.

Juwan is one of our own.  We knew he was a first time head coach, and it just seems to me that our athletic department didn't do enough to support/help him.  No doubt, Juwan deserves some blame.  I just hope that our next coach gets more support.

I don't feel good about it, from a personal level because of his Fab Five history. But in no way could I see him rebuilding this program. He's better off back in the NBA as an assistant and maybe later get a HC job. Will root for him to be successful wherever he ends up.

Hoke wasn't a UM grad but was considered to be a Michigan Man from his assistant days. Sad to see him go too in 2014 but knew it was the right thing. Both Brady and Juwan loved Michigan. I give them credit for showing the hard work and love. Things just didn't work out.

The new coach is going to have to put up with small crowds (except when rivals take over Crysler) in the early days. I've been a fan since the mid 70s under Johnny Orr. I was a FR in 81-82 when we started 0-13 and finished 7-20. Fan support was sparse that year but went to some games on 5 dollar student tickets. At least that team was young and played hard. Mistakes made were really rookie/FR variety but you could see the growth happening when we upset a ranked Iowa team and gave defending champ IU a big scare. This team got worse and worse as the year rolled on.

I pitty Juwan somewhat because it's very unlikely that he would've been fired had he just sat out the season on medical leave.

That said, I don't believe Michigan was in a position to give him the kind of support he needed to thrive here. He needs NIL support and a more flexible admissions department, which would allow him to build a more talented roster. Whereas Beilein's was more of a developmental program, Howard's was more of a showcase program (in a similar vein to Calipari's UK). Developmental coaches can and have thrived at big-time programs like UNC, Duke and UK, but Michigan simply lacks the infrasture to support the showcase coaches.

That's not to say Howard is not a good coach. Just that he's one of those coaches who makes his bones by getting elite talents to play well together (a skill which is nothing to sneeze at).

He hit another coach during the post game handshake. I loved Juwan as a player but he should have been fired after that incident. There should be zero tolerance for that type of behavior from a head coach. Unfortunately, that’s what I’ll remember about Juwan Howard as the head coach of Michigan.

Driving through Nebraska?

Yeah, it doesn't have the spectacular vistas of ocean or canyon, majestic river or towering mountains.

But having driven across the US a few times, north, south, and middle, I like the zen of driving through the Nebraska.

And please ditch the old stereotype of Nebraska as flat. It's rolling plains. By contrast, though the Saginaw Valley has much to recommend it, it's VERY flat.

Guys mentioned that Illinois hates Michigan but didn't know why.

I don't know either but I knew a guy from Dick Butkus's family and that guy hated Michigan with a white-hot heat.

Background:  I went to a massive high school in Cook County (~1000 kids in my graduating class).  Several of my close friends went of UofI.  I was the only person in my graduating class to go to Michigan.  So I know this "rivalry".  It is defined by a handful of instances:

1. We constantly beat the shit out of them in football, and after they fired Gary Moeller, we took it out on them even worse.  This is what older Illinois fans remember.

2. We derailed the best Illinois basketball team ever and went on to win the NC in 1989

3. Illinois should have won the 2000 football game, but some bad officiating benefited Michigan

4. They are a "safety school" academically compared to Michigan and they hate that.  Illinois engineering program is arguably better than Michigan's, but they never get the credit for it.

I live in Urbana and definitely agree with #4. Even if Illinois is a notch below Michigan academically, it is a world-class institution—and not just in engineering. However, they've done a terrible job marketing the university over the years. Their alumni aren't much help, IMHO, and a good number of them pine for their old racist mascot.

I happily accept any accusations of "Michigan Arrogance" versus what I see from many Illinois alums.  They've got a lot to brag about in their alma mater, but someone else has always got it better than them.

This cycle for basketball is that rare occasion where I'm pretty indifferent towards the idea of a splashy hire. Things are more or less at rock bottom and unlike the Howard transition, I don't foresee any staff continuity, (sadly) not even w/ S&C. Not to mention we're a football school where the NIL sucks even for football. The new coach probably gets to miss 2 NCAA tournaments before he begins to draw the ire of the fanbase, so you may as well go get the guy who wins eventually w/ a program that relies on juniors and seniors instead of one-and-done type talents.

I am convinced there will be a curse on Michigan hockey until the hosts of this podcast learn to properly pronounce the name of the defending national champion Quinnipiac Bobcats.

The Dayton AD comment was confusing to me. Dayton has had the playin game since 2001. Their AD started in 2015. Maybe he's done a good job at keeping it, but it certainly wasn't his idea.

Plural of DeVry? DEE-vries (like fries)? NO

Say it like DeFreeze but with a V.

I prefer him over Medved and it might be my Dutch background.
