Hassan Haskins Has Committed to Michigan Comment Count

Seth

Hope you like late-rising bruisebacks, because Michigan just got one out of Missouri:

The Michigan offer came early this month and presaged others as several Big Ten teams were sniffing around the senior putting up ludicrous stats (over 1800 yards, 30 TDs so far) this year. Quick Hudl review shows a big guy with ridiculous balance and power—think Kareem Walker, or Gus Edwards, the Rutgers RB who impressed us last week.

Informative update cometh tomorrow.

He wasn't great once moving side to side, but when RU needed a couple he could get it running north/south. Punched it in near the goal line when just about everyone in the stadium knew he was getting the ball. Outside of Grant he seemed like their most talented player.

He did it against the Michiga defense for starters. He’s probably not a star, but he looks to be a guy who can be relied upon in short yardage situations and will break a few tackles for decent yardage. If you just look at his stat line, it wasn’t overly impressive. But watch the guy. He was pretty good considering the circumstances.

Take a last look at these rankings.  They won't stay like this.

It's literally impossible for Jim Harbaugh to sign a 2 star.  Whoever he signs will be bumped up to at least a high 3 star no matter what.

He could sign my grandmother and she'd be a 3 star.  And she's really not that fast.

I didn't see anything that indicated ridiculous balance. I just watched his entire junior highlights, and there were two or three runs where he did a good job of staying upright. "Ridiculous" is a bit of hyperbole.

Having said that, Haskins runs very hard through contact and breaks a lot of tackles; somebody said on the other thread that he goes down on arm tackles, and that's a crock if his junior highlights are any indication. He's good at changing directions in tight traffic, which means he can squeeze extra yards out of situations where other RBs just plow straight ahead into a tackle. He's not a burner who will hit the long home run very often, but rather a reliable, chain-moving back who always gets positive yardage.

He made a big jump from junior to senior year. But evaluating is done so early nowadays everyone’s already scouted before their senior year of actual football, which is ridiculous. https://www.hudl.com/video/3/4660927/59d8fa8b9a9c510abcb6f76b Very good balance + feet. Very good frame. Good size, has room to be 6’1 220lbs comfortably. Solid speed. Quick in and outs of his cuts. Uses and sets up his blockers well. Good jump cut. Very good power, seemingly a willing blocker. I’m not sure what the disconnect is here, between his film and offers, but there is one. I’ll happily be the high man here on Hassan Haskins.

Edwards was the #1 fullback in the country and had offers from Miami, Florida State, and about 10 other SEC/ACC/B1G schools. I am not sure that is a fair comparison. He’s only at Rutgers due to grad transferring in the offseason.

recruitment.

Why is his offer list not more impressive?  Why is he only the no. 95 composite RB, and only the no. 15 overall HS recruit in Missouri, per 247?

He had over 1900 rushing yards this year, and over 9 YPC average.

Not saying that should make him the next Leonard Fournette, but those are good numbers for a guy ranked 95th RB and 15th overall player in his state.

His team finished 11-0, won its conference, and was ranked 6th overall in Missouri, so it is not like he is playing on some terrible team with no decent opponents.

Does not add up.

a top 15 RB.  Does not justify being at no. 95.

Also, there is some conflict on his 40 time, with other sites showing a better time.  On hos weight, others show him at 205.   Either way, 195-205 is not a reason that he has to be pushed all the way down to no. 95.

Not saying that he is going to awsome or that he will be terrible.

Just saying that no. 95 seems way too low, just based on his rushing yards, YPC, etc.

Does not really add up.

yards and 29 TDs is they are not very good.  His HS team is ranked no. 6 in Missouri this year.

Again, 1900 yards does not mean he should be a high 4 star.  But it does not fit with the offer list and no. 95 247 composite RB ranking.

And while the offer list 'usually' (your word) is a good indicator, it is not always a good indicator.

That is why this does not add up.  1900 yards and 29 TDs on the no. 6 ranked team in Missouri does not add up to no. 95 RB ranking.

And preemptively, for those stargazers wondering about his ratings--he does help the team open up the St. Louis area as a pipeline. We also want to target a bunch of Trinity Catholic players as well in the next year or two. Not saying Missouri will be the next New Jersey/Georgia, but my understanding is that this may play a part of a bigger strategy.

Missouri is something like the #8th most popular state for NFL players to come from. It's a (surprisingly) talent rich state, with an in state school (Mizzou) that's terrible, and Michigan is highly interested in at least three top 100 kids for 2019 from the state, plus several from the 2018 cycle including Michael Thompson, a top DT.

Could be a 2016 New Jersey recruiting situation if Michigan can pull it off.

Mizzou is in a tailspin.  Both football and academic enrollment side.

If we can pounce on the state while it's weak we may be able to cherry pick the biggest stars for years to come.

Being in STL I could ramble off a few other things or why they are but it'd just be tl:dr.
