OTL is going all in on MSU, Izzo, Dantonio
January 26th, 2018 at 1:54 PM ^
ESPN just dropped a nuke on the MSU athletic program. Good luck to their next AD, they need someone who will clean house... or tear the house down.
January 26th, 2018 at 1:54 PM ^
As stated previously above, the details that MSU obfuscated and didn't want to release/covered up sound a lot like Baylor.
Still think the cult of personality prevails and nothing is done to these two revered coaches unfortunately.

I predict this will be our next MSU-related MGoBoard post:

Is there anybody in charge who is not completely self-serving?
Who is looking out for the various stakeholders of the University who are not in the inner circle of running it?
Anybody at all?

No. Who the hell is going to terminate them at this point? They don't have an AD, and I doubt the board would ever consider that.
Will they be forced to resign if heat becomes too hot? I think that's the more likely outcome.
January 26th, 2018 at 2:57 PM ^
Snort answer: No.
They might not have jobs any more, they might "resign" or "retire" or be "reassigned" but considering that not a single person has been fired related to the assault (aside from Nassar himself, eventually) I highly doubt that starts with the football or basketball coach.
January 26th, 2018 at 2:00 PM ^
Given the recent handling of these events, my disdain is at an all time high. However, I'm starting to feel badly for the thousands of upright students and professors as well as coaches and athletes that are at that institution. We all know, in our hearts, there are many upright people who are associated with the university. At this point, any association with MSU is considered toxic. Those leaders let this university down in a bad, bad way.
January 26th, 2018 at 3:00 PM ^
It depends on how they handle it from here.
If they go all Penn State and deny it and obfuscate it, then fuck 'em.
If they acknowledge the sins and repent and actually prevent it from ever happening again, they will come out of it OK over time.
January 26th, 2018 at 6:27 PM ^
This will only be good for the students, stopping the rape train being run on them. Sure their sports fandom might be less enjoyable but tahts only deserving.
As for the athletes, many of them are there because of that culture. Because they can rape, assault, not go to class, take roids, etc.. Fuck 'em. And they'll all be able to transfer anyway.
January 26th, 2018 at 2:00 PM ^
Honest question: How is what's happened at MSU any different from what happened at Baylor? And if there's no difference, how long before Dantonio and Izzo meet the same, deserved fate of Art Briles?
January 26th, 2018 at 3:10 PM ^
I consider what Briles did way worse. Those allegations directly involved Baylor football players and his coaching staff.
I don't think we have any proof Dantonio did the same sorts of things.

January 26th, 2018 at 2:59 PM ^
Is it really so surprising that anything goes at MSU so long as they're beating Michigan?
January 26th, 2018 at 2:02 PM ^
January 26th, 2018 at 4:08 PM ^
If hypocrisy was lethal, Mark Dantonio would have already gotten last rites.
January 26th, 2018 at 2:03 PM ^
Good, now couches arent the only thing that will be burning in EL.
January 26th, 2018 at 2:04 PM ^
Hasn't it been an open secret for some time that MSU's big programs don't really deal with sexual assaults in a particularly proactive way? My memory is a bit murky, but I think the purported victim wanted to bring charges against Payne and Appling but was disuaded by school administrators and the police. There were a number of situations before Corley & co. where Dantonio didn't publicly address sexual assault issues with players.
I get no school is perfect, and Michigan certainly has had sexual assault isues in their recent past. But one of the characteriziations I've always despised about Izzo and particularly Dantonio are that they are tough, disciplinarians with their players, when actual evidence shows basically the opposite.
January 26th, 2018 at 2:11 PM ^
Seems to me they've been pretty proactive in covering them up.
January 26th, 2018 at 2:15 PM ^
As for Dantonio as disciplinarian, the incident that always stands out to me is the one in which Glenn Winston was reinstated to the team after punching the MSU hockey player in the back of the head, which broke the hockey player's skull and caused brain bleeding. And the punch was for the hockey player's crime of being near (but not in) a fight.
January 26th, 2018 at 2:20 PM ^
Was he the player who was let back on the team the day he was released from jail?
January 26th, 2018 at 2:26 PM ^
He was released and back practicing within 24 hours.
January 26th, 2018 at 2:27 PM ^
Yep. Also, Winston was later booted from the team again for...you guessed it...another assault on students, this time that Rathers Hall beating.
And it's even little things like Scott sitting out exactly one drive against IU despite driving without a license and being caught over a half-dozen times. I've always assumed the downfall of Tom Izzo will be him getting caught for recruiting violations that will show years of it, and Dantonio's will be when he tries to keep his leading WR or QB on the team after the guy does something insane in the middle of the campus.
January 26th, 2018 at 3:41 PM ^
who got out of jail and immediately played against iowa a few years ago. forget his name though. his time served was his punishment. i think this was just before or just after dantonio's zero tolerance statements.
January 26th, 2018 at 4:12 PM ^
Several years ago some media org took a look at the unholy association between FSU and the Tallahassee PD, and it was evident that the cops were actively conniving with the FSU athletic department to keep athlete crimes out of the public eye.
I'll bet that when all the dust settles, the same situation will be evident to have been the case in EL for at least two decades.

sold his soul to the devil for a little run of success. And now he is at Michigan State to collect his payments.
Please dont think Im taking this lightly, I hope it didnt come off that way but I feel MSU is completely surrounded by evil right now.
To all victims, stay strong

Very good piece of journalism there. Lousy topic, and one I really wish didn;t occur within our state, but it has. All I can say is that nuclear winter is coming, and yes - pride does come before the fall.

Arguably a very good coach/motivator. Fine.
But I lost all respect for him when it became clear he was actively or tacitly coaching his players to cheap shot Michigan players whenever possible.
Plenty of these incidents were visible on broadcasts, and I’m sure many were not.
I know this happens in football, so I’m talking about stuff beyond the norm, falling comfortably into the realm of classlessness

He's won games and you can't take that away from him, but I personally think the job is about more than winning. The head coach should also insist on education and good character. I think Jim Harbaugh believes this. So did Hoke, Lloyd, etc. As a Michigan alum I will always insist that our head coach places values on these things, even though I know that at times it will make it more difficult for us to compete with certain other programs. I don't believe Dantonio gave this much thought. I think he was willing to overlook a lot, particularly if it helped him win and in particular to beat Michigan. This is why I always thought he was a dick irregardless of the fact that he had success against us.

Better chance they resign after losing Hollis. They should be very afraid more women will be coming forward.

Maybe there's a cause-and-effect relationship between steroid use and MSUs high rate of sexual assault? Hmm

If there's anything I've learned from this, from Baylor, and from Penn State, it's that this kind of thing can happen anywhere. In the right situation, it could happen at Michigan. Am I saying it will? No. But we'd be foolish to assume that it could never happen here, either. And that's really a scary thought.
"We men are wretched things."
January 26th, 2018 at 2:58 PM ^
Bullshit like this is only allowed to happen if you have a complete lack of leadership at the top of the University or at the top of the Athletic Department. Good leaders don't let bullshit like this happen on their watch.
January 26th, 2018 at 2:41 PM ^
MSU has a lot more going on than just "this Nassar thing."
