Coached RB's at BC from '14 - '16
January 4th, 2018 at 11:38 AM ^
Given BC's success at turning random dudes into mashers, seems like a good hire.

The guy I really wish we would hire is John Settle -- Wisconsin's RB coach. Whatever he's making, just give him 4x as much and bring him here. Don't think there's anyone in CFB that's had a better track record at finding excellent diamonds in the rough at RB.
January 4th, 2018 at 1:05 PM ^
It's not that easy.

I believe ESPN announced the new coach as Al Valentine...
January 4th, 2018 at 4:31 PM ^
Just as long as it's not Ted Valentine

To me it seems like Cincy was trying to get him on the staff in any way because of his ability to recruit and connections in Ohio.
January 4th, 2018 at 11:45 AM ^
He was a DT in college and actually has more experience coaching D-line than running backs.

i.e., if you teach RBs what a DL reads and how they respond, etc. Can the RB then better pick up a block or find a gap to run through? Kind of a know your enemy sort of thing ...
January 4th, 2018 at 12:26 PM ^
I'm starting to think RB coaching experience might not be all that important. We plugged Jaybaugh in there with no experience and the backs did great. If this guy has done it before and can recruit, I'm all for it.
January 4th, 2018 at 12:38 PM ^
They couldn't pick up blocks to save their lives.

we score on that drive, Spary was finished I don't care how early it was.
January 4th, 2018 at 12:43 PM ^
Prepare thyself for the "Jay Harbaugh is only on the staff due to nepotism" takes.
Personally I think he was mediocre as a RB coach this season. Did better as a TE coach...
January 4th, 2018 at 12:46 PM ^
not trying to be contrarian, but i totally disagree.
higdon and evans highlights were essentially the uncoachable skills (evans shiftiness, and higdons acceleration and jump cut), but as far as coachables pass-pro, gap patience, ball security, etc, a lot of it was pretty terrible.
Also, the fact that we have yet to get a regularly utilized RB that even breaks 200lbs is absurd. I'm happy to use smaller, shifty, speedy guys, nothing against them, but you also need to be able to pound the ball for 4-5 yards every play if you really want to be able to win.
January 4th, 2018 at 1:52 PM ^
I dont know about that. This was the first year in the last 3-4 years where we were not constantly assailed with RBs constantly missing holes and cutback lanes.
All of these players have talent. Derrick Green had talent. Thomas Rawls had talent. Coaching is about translating talent into production, and this was the first year since _???_ that we've seen any consisent production from multiple RBs

Criticisms of JayBaugh being on this staff are anything but hot takes. He doesn't have the chops to be in any sort of position coaching position at UM. It's not like UM is operating in a vacuum -- if casual fans can point out the shortcomings you gotta know it's being brought up on the recruiting front (where we are swinging and missing with regularity).
Nothing against Jay but let him go cut his teeth at GVSU like everyone else does.

Ok but seriously, I've been to 2 M games and everyone cheers for slippery rock when the score is announced - what is it though? I'm not being facetious I genuinely don't know the story...
January 4th, 2018 at 4:39 PM ^
Here's an article about it. But basically in 1959 the PA announcer at MIchigan Stadium was announcing scores from around the country. It's a funny school name, so he included it, people laughed/cheered, and they've done it since then.
January 4th, 2018 at 9:41 PM ^
has a funny school name? Lipscomb. Yes, I am 15 years old.
January 16th, 2018 at 5:22 PM ^
It's kind of a mean tradition, if we're honest about it, but the schools have leaned into it and become close so that is nice.

I care more about the recruiting aspect. He's not a coordinator, he's a position coach so he has significantly less outcome on the game than OC or DC based on how he teaches the players. He does however have a significant impact if he beats out OSU on the recruiting trail.

Former RB coach at BC, during some very good rushing years. Google can provide all kinds of info. OP, you might consider posting a link to his bio.

...to coach running backs?
1. Protect the football.
2. Follow your blocks/blockers.
3. Don't directionally cut off of your inside foot.
4. Run to daylight.
5. Run hard and get positive yards after contact.
I think I'm qualified! Plus, I'll do it at a fraction of the cost of the typical assistant coach.

Exactly, let's run our most talented players into the ground by playing them both ways. Who cares if they get injured, it will be worth it if it helps us win a game...

That being said, Gary does seem to injure himself due to over-pursuit.
He also injured McCray on an over-pursuit play in the bowl game.
Gary seems tough as nails, but he certainly has been 3rd or 4th man-in on an already tackled player and ended up coming out for the series/rest of the game. Those 300lbs at 4.5 40-time are like an F1 car hitting a wall.
