Yes it would
January 3rd, 2018 at 3:09 PM ^
We wanted Les Miles, and got RichRod. Arizona got RichRod after we fired him for Hoke, who was then fired for Harbaugh, and now is getting Les Miles...
No idea, but this is all part of some grand plan from gOD.

would do well in Az
Good for him if he lands the job. Can't be worse than RR!

I'm a lot of fun at parties. Any kind of party. I'll strip for bachelorettes. I'll cry at your mom's wake and complement the food with a vengeance. I'll rock your Tupperware party. I'll snort up all your lines and seduce the groupies at your post-rock concert shindig.

I imagine Tate will transfer regardless. But especially if they hire Miles. Not a quarterback whisperer he.
January 3rd, 2018 at 5:42 PM ^
And wouldn't you know it, there's a spread guy who just jumped into the conference in LA...
January 3rd, 2018 at 7:46 PM ^
He'd have to go there as a grad transfer. No way Arizona lets him transfer to an in-division rival.
January 3rd, 2018 at 3:03 PM ^
The irony is Rich here.
Everything else that comes to mind about similarities and differences between Les and RR is unkind.
But they are rather different in preferred offensive styles.
January 3rd, 2018 at 4:13 PM ^
Considering the revelation about RR's private activities and the long-time rumors about Miles, they appear to share one trait that's pretty offensive.
January 3rd, 2018 at 4:36 PM ^
That rumor is the main reason why I thought Les was never a serious candidate for the job here. It would've taken a lot of forgiveness or desperation by the AD to bring him back.
January 3rd, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
...but I think it's related to a more general sense that Miles was a bit too willing to press the edges of the acceptable (like the last minute greyshirt decisions, the academic scandal while he was at OK State). I think Martin would have been OK with that--he probably wasn't familiar with any of the specifics--but then he heard from the portion of the community that wasn't, and they were voices he respected. That put him in a bind.

FWIW I wanted Miles here at Michigan... he is far more Bo, than Harbaugh is. Miles is a bully and prick and was what Bo was and is what exactly was needed at that time, instead of Hoke...
January 3rd, 2018 at 4:23 PM ^
He never won a national title. I'd like to see us win one.
January 3rd, 2018 at 9:43 PM ^
Right up to the 1990 Rose Bowl, some swingbag official admitted he purposely blew a call so "that son of a bitch wouldn't win his final game".

Miles is a bully and prick and was what Bo was and is what exactly was needed at that time, instead of Hoke... no apologizing to Dantoni, or shedding tear at opening press conference. We needed Miles' swagger desperately, and only are now recovering....
January 3rd, 2018 at 3:46 PM ^
Miles would have been the guy. I wanted him too. Not sure how he would have done - but likely better than 500 against Dicktonio and maybe win 1 out of 3 vs. Tressel/Meyer. Our B1G title drought wouldn't go back to '04 - he'd have won at least one of them.
To think of the pain Bill Martin put the guy through - a Michigan Man never deserved this run-around like Les got.
January 3rd, 2018 at 4:05 PM ^
Unless Bacon has a different take, I think Bo would have allowed Lloyd to handpick his successor - that's how much respect Bo had for Lloyd. And as many of us know, Lloyd was apparently grooming...........ugh........Mike DeBord - a choice that incensed enough people in and around Ft Schem to cause Lloyd to retire after '07 rather than '06.
January 3rd, 2018 at 4:30 PM ^
It wasn't that simple. Bo was AD at the time he retired; Carr wasn't. Martin was ultimately going to make the call.
But if it had happened, then DeBord would have probably flamed out quickly and we may have hired Miles around '09 or '10.
January 3rd, 2018 at 6:51 PM ^
What I was trying to say, Bo had leverage over the entire AD (hell, over A2), let alone the football program right up through his death.
If Bo trusted Lloyd (which is how Lloyd got the interim tag removed), then DeBord would have been the one running up the middle every play through 3 and 4 win seasons right up until we couldn't take it anymore. As you say - then we would have hired Miles or Harbaugh in '09 or '10.
January 3rd, 2018 at 10:45 PM ^
Bo wasn't all-powerful. He was stunned when Moeller was fired.
I've never heard that he was the reason Lloyd got the interim tag removed. I'm sure he was in favor but the timing doesn't make sense. Lloyd had to coach about 10 games that season before it happened; I don't think Bo would have wanted him and the program to be under uncertainty for that long.
January 4th, 2018 at 11:17 AM ^
Fair enough. But it's safe to assume that nothing significant happened in the AD without someone at least mentioning it to Bo - football coaching hires, for example.

is Sumlin to Michigan as OC. I realize that it wouldn't be for more than a year or two, but I keep thinking that Patterson (whose on-field game has been compared to Manziel's) + KS would solve a ton of our offensive concerns.

January 3rd, 2018 at 5:18 PM ^
The commenters at azdesertswarm don't seem to be taking this very seriously, but then they "thought the early Herm Edwards reports were a pointless smoke screen," to quote one of the doubters.
They like the thought of interviewing Miles though. It gives a good look to the search, makes it seem like an attractive position, or so a couple of people have said. Same for Sumlin.
it makes the job seem more attractive to have more big names attached to it. When Sean Miller first got to Az, there were rumors that he somehow convinced Doron Lamb to include Arizona in his final 4 of recruiting, even though there was no way Lamb was seriously considering UA (he ended up at UK on the champ team). Miller just wanted Az to be included with the names of the blue bloods again when they showed recruit’s top choices at the McD AA Game and elsewhere. Having Miles and Sumlin’s names, as well as their implied interest is good overall for the school.
Interesting take on the mechanics of a search.
January 3rd, 2018 at 6:32 PM ^
I'm pretty convinced that Les Miles is retired, but faking interest in these jobs. IIRC, I read that part of the stipulations of Les Miles's buyout is that he has to be actively looking for a job to recieve his payments.
Miles's buyout from LSU has offset language, so if Miles's can land another job, LSU would only have to pay him the difference between his buyout payments - his new salary. So I feel like Miles's party just keeps leaking that he is interested in all these job openings to keep up appearances, but he really just wants to ride off into the sunset with he free cash.
January 3rd, 2018 at 7:00 PM ^
I think it would be neat if Les were hired at Arizona, or anywhere else.
January 3rd, 2018 at 7:19 PM ^
Coach Miles did a great job at OSU and LSU. The folks in Baton Rouge right now are pretty sorry at this point that they let him go because of alumni politics. LSU has lost their swagger without him and Alabama has breathed a bit easier since his departure. He deserves another shot to be a HC once again and he would do wonderful in Arizona. Its a guarantee that he will be a pain in the neck on the recruiting trail for Chip Kelly in California and he would pull some Texas and SEC talent to Arizona as well. I hope they hire him. College football is better with Les Miles in the coaching ranks.
